    I love how you taper the planks. I don't see many ship modelers on TH-cam do that. John Aliprantis is the only other one I know of that does. But the result is so much nicer. Such beautiful lines on the ship. I have yet to plank my first ship, I'd like to use this method but don't think I'd be able to.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much!
      In fact, it is not so difficult to do, how much more boring! This is the biggest mistake of beginners - to glue faster, and then nothing comes together! Therefore, the saying "the quieter you go, the further you will be" is very appropriate here. Sometimes I can glue only one plank on one side a day, but in my opinion - it's worth it, than to look at the crooked hull and regret that I was in a hurry to just glue the all planks in one day!

      @@OlhaBatchvarov one thing I see people say is because my ship is double lined it doesn't matter with the first lining as you don't see it. But I think it should still be given the same care as the rest of the ship. Maybe I should try it your way from the start. Better to learn correct techniques from the beginning.

    VERY good video - great job of planking the bottom. Have you ever considered using a Foredom rotary tool? I have used both Dremel and Foredom, and greatly appreciate using the latter. Speed is controlled by foot pedal, thus no switch to turn of/off. Very quick tool changes also. Has a lot more power than the Dremel, and can be obtained through Rio Grande jewelry supply. And you can still use the Dremel sanders, etc. Just a thought. Meanwhile, keep up the fantastic ship building! You are an inspiration for many of us who love making things with their hands and brains.

      @@OlhaBatchvarov I think I will order some 32 AWG in two contrasting colors. May be able to hide the wiring also, as I did when building a "doll house" for my boss. Sure does not take much to solder using "Tic" brand - low enough heat that you could use a match if you wanted, melts at about 250 deg. F.

    Olha, what kind of heater are you using in this video to (steam) bend your planks? How long do you soak your planks before steam bending them, especially the "severe" bends -- minutes, hours, longer?
    What is the (specially shaped aluminum?) block that you use as a sanding block? Do its notches & corners have special functions?
    I honestly had forgotten about the custom-made "keel assembly" (my incorrect term - it was _way_ past my bedtime when I watched that video ;) and was wondering what you would do to clean up the "joint" between the port & starboard sides of the model. Now it's so obvious that I feel like an idiot, but I don't think that I'll forget how to do that again!

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is walnut - it is very malleable by nature, so I just wet it before bending and immediately on the heater (еhis is a 1500W уlectric Oil heater from Amazon).
      It's just a piece of aluminum with 90 degree sides (bought as scrap metal).
      Everything comes with experience...

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depending on which side is stretched, and which side is compressed... You need to reduce the compression and simultaneously reduce the side with stretching, so cut the wood from the side that stretched. I have a video "How to taper planks..." in the playlist for gold members where I explain it schematically and with examples...

    Прекрасная работа! Пытаюсь представить вот все это в жизни, думаю таких реально длинных досок по метров 30, быть не могло. Как то видимо народ стыковал доски обшивки метров по 6, длиннее просто распил, стволы не укладывается в голове. И да, дедовский прием, паяльник на 30 ватт мощности, жало вынимается, взамен вставляется строительный длинный саморез 4...6 мм диаметром, длиной 60...80 мм с плоской шляпкой. Теперь нагрев шляпки самореза будет 100...140 градусов, хорошо прогревает но не палит дерево. При желании можно сделать ролик для горячей прикатки. Благодарю!

      Расшивку лучше делать имитацию - так как ровно на моделе легче укладЬІвать целую планку! Но я пока даже разметку еще не наносила - я в раздумиях буду ли красить (тогда дно не буду даже заморачиваться гвоздевать) или оставлю дерево...
      Что касается длиннЬІ досок! Готова поспорить. Далеко ходить не буду - реальная карака Мери Роуз в Порисмуте: на ней обшивка вЬІполнена досками всреднем длинной 20 м. И ето после того как ее несколько раз ремонтировали и могли частично заменить доски. На палубе есть пару штук более 25м длинной. Так что мастера могли распустить довольно таки длиннЬІе стволЬІ деревьев...

    Love your plank bender! I use an antique autoclave. I have another question: what is your preferred method to cut the rabbet in a keel? Method but also which tools? Carving is typical but I am curious of a method with a small modified plane, scraper, etc.

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer to simplify the design and do without the device rabbet. But when there is such a necessity - usually I just use a scalpel with a new sharp blade.

    • @killerkane1957
      @killerkane1957 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@OlhaBatchvarov Yes! I noticed you didn’t have a rabbet line. So to take this further, you fit a false keel to the plank as opposed to fitting planks to the keel. This is also a challenge but not as bad as carving the rabbet line. I have actually resorted to this approach myself. I keep testing you and you are keeping me on my toes trying to stay with your skills! 🤯
      PS: I have a 2,000 sq ft shop with machining, welding, car fabrication, wood working, forging, and ship model areas. I am retired and have always had a bug to build. I counted my ship kits that are in line. Twenty-two! I hope I live that long! Bless you!

    Bonjour Olha. Sorry to ask you to think back. : what was the width of your whales. Watching your video il seems to be 3,4 mm.
    Mine are 4 mm

      I remember that the size was the same as the planks in the kit, only twice as thick...

    Hello Ohla what is that tool you’re using to remove excess glue?

      It's just an old file sharpened on a disk sander.

    Почему не стали делать расшивку досок обшивки?

    • @OlhaBatchvarov
      @OlhaBatchvarov  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Я еще не размечала корпус. Как раз уже на готовой обшивке и буду ето делать. Но правда еще не решила буду красить дно или просто прогвоздевать или вообще оставить так дерево...
      Ето тот случай когда лучше обшивать длиннЬІми рейками корпус, а потом имитировать расшивку - ровнее будет!

      This is an old video - I don't remember all the details anymore.
      Please write the answer in a new comment, because otherwise I will not find it among thousands of others!

      The Wales are thicker than the rest of the planks - you can do it directly on the model!

    Out of all the things she could use to bend the pieces of wood she used a radiator which is weird but it did a good job to be honest.

    Looks very difficult to come out evenly with the planking. Nicely done. A novice could easily make a royal mess of the thing.
