    As a younger man, after baseball season we played football and basketball. Didn't really start throwing again until late February. Travel ball and obsessed parents seem to have changed that.

    Pitch counts protect a player’s muscles from breaking down and straining in a given day - not necessarily a ligament like the UCL unless fatigue leads to poor mechanics that could then in turn effect the ligament. Increasing rest days, minimizing max effort pitches and hard breaking/sweeping type pitches are likely to cut down on Tommy John type injuries.

    I think it’s lack of Cardio. James Shields threw gas his whole career and was very healthy. He was running after every start. Baseball players want to weight lift but they think they can keep their body loose without cardio. All pitchers should be running. Maybe Javelin throwing can help too since it helped Yamamoto’s elbow pain in the past.

    Any correlation or parallels to the rise of arm injuries to the testing and banning of steroid (hgh) use --- cause using "lil helpers" - help with injuries --- i never heard of forearm injuries - did steroids unknowingly help or stop the minor strains and injuries that led to the big injuries.

    I cant believe that mlb and players dont understand how to avoid injuries and why theyre on the rise. Is for one thing and very simple. They do not train for withstanding more throws they only train for increasing velocity. Tell me which pitcher in the offseason goes all the way to 100-150 pitch bullpens? Nobody absolutely nobody. The only way to be prepared to throw 100 throws in the game is that in the offseason you slowly progress all the way to 100-150 throws. You might call me crazy to encourage offseason bullpens of 100-150 throws but its even crazier to think that 30 pitch bullpens will prepare you to throw 100 in the game. That is foolish nonsense. The arm doesnt know how many throws is doing it only knows stress. If youve only throwing 30 pitch bullpens and then increase it all of the sudden to 100 youre increasing more than double of what your body can handle. Now if you slowly progress in the offseason to 150 throws your body and arm are going to get use to that stress. But pitchers from today dont give their body the opportunity to get use to the stress. They think that fancy exercises or better mechanics will do it. Or they think that there is something else that will do the magic. It doesnt exist. The only thing you can do to prepare your body to throw 100 pitches in the game and remain healthy is that you slowly progress to those numbers of throws in the offseason. Period nothing else will do the job but that. Sometimes you only need logic and common sense to solve a problem. Its ironic that sometimes common sense is the least sense the human uses.

      I think it's a bit of an unfixable problem. The pitchers either need to lay off throwing so many sliders/ breaking balls or learn to sit in the lower 90s with an effective change. But if hitting the upper 90s is what gets you signed and make the big money then they won't ever make that adjustment. Especially when starters are only expected to go 5 maybe 6 innings. IMO you gotta learn to PITCH not just rip every pitch as hard as possible and stay OFF the mound until right before spring training. I just don't see it being fixed anytime soon

      JonathanNielsen-mn6ke the first and the most important one is that when you havent thrown 100 pitches before you have to slowly progress to that number of pitches so your arm and body start getting use to that stress. The body can only progress at a certain point and when you havent thrown that many pitches it may take up to a year of slowly progressing so your body has a chance to correctly get use to the stress. If you do what everybody does going from 20-30 pitch bullpens to 100-120 in the game in a matrer of 1 month or two the body and arm havent really get use to the stress and thats why you always see pitchers getting sore the next day after throwing or need pills or need massages or icing because they never have down that steady progression in order to give the body and arm a correct chance to get use to that amount of throws. So when you do it you will throw 120 in the game and the next day you will feel like if you havent pitch at all and you feel like you can throw again and you dont need pills massages or icing anythig special because your body already went to a correct process and it can handle that stress. So if you never do that steady progression at least once in your lifetime your body will never be able to handle that stress is like if you run a marathon when you only have run only 3k and you never train above 3k obiously your body will never get use to because youre not doing the correct progression to give your body a chance to adapt. Now the other reason is pure logic. If in april youre gonna have to pitch 120 throws in the game what would be better for the body? to go from 0-120 in one month or to go from 0-120 in six months? Obiously is better to go to 120 in six months you can make the progression slower not rushing anything and let your body adapt you can throw a rest week here and there if you need it when you have six months but when you have only one month youre praying god that your arm doesnt fall down and everything works perfect because if not you dont have time to rest or recover for the next 6 months. So in other words when the season ends pitchers need to keep throwing obiously lower the amount of throws and intensity and start building up very slowly. But no pitcher that i have known or heard does this because theyre corrupted by the system theyre not using logic or trying to figure out how the body gets stronger or progress to handle stress. And the worst is that when someone has a different idea or opinion they say he is wrong just because is different or just because they didnt play at the highest level. So there you have it thats why there are so many injuries the same applies to sprints and batting.

    Hicks can very his speeds. Sit at low to mid 90's then crank it up to high 90's to 100+

    Makes you wonder how pitchers in the 60's and 70's had very few arm injuries. Because of that I believe it's all about the spin rate not the vilo

      Pitchers in the 60s and 70s had lots of arm injuries, with far fewer medical options available when they were hurt. What you saw back then were some great pitchers who threw a lot of pitches every 4 days. What you didn’t see were even more pitchers who never made the big leagues or washed out fast due to ‘sore arms.’ It was survival of the fittest because before free agency, players didn’t represent that much of an investment for clubs and were thus disposable. Plus, there were fewer major league teams and more minor league teams, so teams could keep replacing pitchers at will. Nolan Ryan was just a freak of nature.

    Travel ball is a big part of the problem. They play way too many games for the players to rest their young bodies and arms, and there is no way the teams have enough pitching to play the number of games they play. The number of games are used to justify the cost of travel ball. Plus they all play other positions and have to throw before and during games. There’s not enough time for practice and teaching fundamentals.
