    Best gardening channel ever. You actually give the information and don't waste people's time with long intros and music and other crap. Informative, to the point, easy to understand. And you even organize and provide time stamps. A lot of people don't do this and you can often find yourself scrubbing through a 15 minute video to the find the information you need. So huge kudos to you guys.

    I grow my peppers in both containers and in-ground. I've taken notice over the years, that the peppers in containers are notoriously bad with blossom drop...whereas the peppers growing in-ground suffer significantly less blossom drop. I mainly grow the Super Hots(Ghost, Scorpions and Reapers). These peppers always give sub-par results, per plant, for me in pots. Somethin in that ground I tell ya!

    I started pepper(Cayenne) growing this year, in the temperate zone, kept 2 large bushes identical in growth, one produced around 40+ fruits sharing a 20l pot with 2 small lemon habanero that didnt have a fun time for some reason healthy but no flowers the other pland who was alone in a 20l pot with a little less soil kept dropping all flowers. I added only 4l of the same soil and boom it starts producing in every flower. Now my question to anyone out there is, are peppers really this sencitive??? 4l added to about 12l soil 16 ish in total was enough.

    I think another cause is low overnight temperatures. If it gets below around 50F, give or take a few degrees, a lot of plants will just be like, "nope, don't like this..." Typically only a problem in spring/early summer and early autumn in most areas.

    Thank you! We've just gone through a heatwave and my flowers were popping off one after another, I was panicking. I think I had overwatered also slightly (although thankfully no pooling) and the plant simply had tons of flowers to begin with so it just shed off a few. I now see a couple of chilies that have started developing so perhaps I can call off the rest of the panic! If we get another bout of heat I'll just move the plants to a cooler spot, I made the mistake of leaving them frying at a very exposed spot which I think may have done it. So excited to see what comes from these chilies. This channel is so valuable to new growers like me, so thank you again!

    I have a few bushes of Jalapenos in 15l tanks. Lower parts have quite big peppers now but the higher parts keep getting yellow and fell off :/ I mean the pollinated ones, i can see that there are small, green peppers on them but the whole "tail" is yellow and it falls off either by itself or only by touching it. I live in Poland so there are no heatwaves above 35C and since those are Jalapenos i suppose it should be ok with temperature around 30C ? I try not to overwater it, i check on soil with my fingers and if i feel its not dry i let it be, leaves never looked weak on them. Basically i water them every 2-3 days, depends on the soil. Maybe there are not enough nutrients ? What should i fertilize it with ? Potassium ? Like tomatoes ?

    I live in Canada about 20-30 min North of Toronto. We usually don’t have issues with droughts. But this past week it has been 30°C (86°F) plus. One day even went to 42°C (108°F). This morning I went to check my garden and one of my bell pepper plants dropped an immature pepper about an inch long and a little less than an inch wide. It has stopped producing flowers at the moment but I am sure when it cools down it will spring back into action. But my question is if can I mist a plant in the garden that I can’t move to the shade? Or I shouldn’t mist them in direct sunlight? I just don’t want my plant to get stressed to the point of dying. Thank you love the videos!!!

    Thanks! I love your channel (maybe that's because I love peppers); love your straight-forward presentation and all the helpful information. I don't grow in soil (no land, stupid HOA rules, etc). My peppers are grown from seed indoors, hydroponically, using Masterblend 4-18-38, Silica Blast, Calcium Nitrate, and Magnesium Sulfate. I get lots of flowers and lots of fruits; I shake the plants daily once the flowers start popping out. I have 3 bushes per 3 gallon bucket. Yes, they go through a lot of water, just like my tomatoes. Last time I grew bell peppers (California Wonder) I got about 13 medium-size bell peppers on a 3 ft tall bush. It did need to be staked--difficult in bucket--but it was worth it! Those were the sweetest, tastiest bell peppers I've ever had in my life...I had no idea they could taste that good. My Anaheims and Poblanos did equally as well. While I hadn't thought about it at the time, those bushes kept producing; as soon as I harvested a batch, more flowers would set. Duh...there are no seasons indoors, LOL.

    • @leannekenyoung
      @leannekenyoung 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s been my experience as well!! No seasons and they just keep cycling through these growth cycles of producing and then growing more greens and stems and then putting on blossoms and then putting on fruit and then ripening and then once the last one is ripened they begin all over again! I’m on my sixth or seventh cycle for my sweet red lipstick peppers this is the first plant I’ve ever grown I moved it into a 40litre container and it really seems to love it! I have two air stones in it and I fill it about once a week. It’s continuing to grow I wonder how many cycles will it continue to grow. How many did your plant grow or is it continuing to grow?

    • @DrValerie800
      @DrValerie800 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leannekenyoung I only got through about 3 cycles on the peppers before I accidentally destroyed all of them trying to get them out of the guest shower. That is the hazard of trying to grow food crops in a tiny overstuffed condo! It's much harder moving those buckets of water and stabilizing the plants at the same time than it is when they are in soil. So I started new ones this year that are now about 3 ft high and doing great. Hopefully they can stay there and avoid my clumsiness for the next few years.

    • @leannekenyoung

      @@DrValerie800 yes it’s been my challenge where to put some of these vegetables that grow monster plants to produce them. One thing I do is prune my plants heavily it’s like they are bonsai plants and I cut off as many leaves as possible and leave the hanging peppers, but it seems it’s a losing battle because before I know it the plant has recovered from my heavy pruning and seems to have put on even more leaves then it had previously. It’s a weekly project cutting of all the leaves but it also allows me to see the blossoms too so I can be sure to tickle as many as possible and I think it results in more peppers. I was just curious how long one of these plants could actually continue to grow and produce before it eventually dies off. I have noticed so much new growth at the end of all the stems and it’s absolutely fascinating to me how it is growing. We have ours in a 40litre container and I wonder if I should be putting it in to a larger container I do have one that is just under 100litres and I was going to transition it when all the peppers had been taken off but the way the plant is growing now with each stem having its on unique grow schedule there is never a time when there isn’t a pepper on it. Which is a great problem to have. I’ve also never changed the nutrients out but I assume if it wasn’t as healthy as it is then it would be something to worry about but with it continuing to crank out the peppers I don’t think it’s a big worry. I do change your the nutrients from a light recipe to a pepper growing recipe. I also put in a certain amount of cal-mag in it too. Is there anyway to know the water must be changed out rather then just doing it routinely? Is there anything I should be looking for either with the plant, the roots or the pepper?

    • @DrValerie800
      @DrValerie800 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leannekenyoung Well I'm no pepper expert (that's why I'm here), nor a hydroponics expert, so I'm not the one to ask about all that. I just bumble along, doing the best I can and continuing to learn. I know it's recommended to change out the nutrient water every 2 weeks but I've never done that. I just add to it and I've never had a problem. I do pH balance everything and my tap water comes from an underground aquifer, untreated, so I don't have to deal with municipal chemicals. My dwarf heirloom Violette de Bordeaux fig has been in the same big container for over 3 years now and it's 10 ft tall and doing great. My other plants I'd had going for a couple years, I let die out due to a housemate moving in and taking over the other bedroom, which WAS my hydroponics room. I do add Cal-Mag when I see any hints of hypochlorosis, which usually only happens during a huge growth spurt...like when my 1 ft fig grew another foot in a couple days. And since I'm growing mostly nightshade vegetables, I check closely for any hint of blossom end rot.The only plants I've had to give a severe haircut to are my Principe Borghese heirloom cherry tomatoes, which are wild n' crazy indeterminate vines that you could grow an entire arbor with from ONE plant. Since those are in my living room and bathroom and have taken over both spaces, a haircut is necessary every couple of weeks. And they go through water/nutrients at around a gallon a day.

    • @leannekenyoung
      @leannekenyoung 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DrValerie800 wow! I could only hope for that problem seriously my tomato plants are soooo sad if it wasn’t my daughters wedding this weekend I’d be pulling them out! Maybe I’ll replace them with the cucumber plant that I’ve got in a little mug that’s really starting to grow! I won’t give up on tomatoes though I want a nice beefsteak tomato that actually tastes like a tomato for a change and not some imitation plastic tasting one from the grocers. Lol! I just thought I’d ask you because you seem to be a bit more advanced then I am in your hydroponics knowledge. Nothing better then someone with experience to share and learn from. It’s funny I always wanted to grow lettuce and grow enough that we would no longer have to buy it from the grocers. There is just the two of us but I guess we eat a lot of it. My main objective was not to use a growing medium if I could help it, just because when it fails it’s a waste and I hate things covered in algae to me that’s worse then dealing with soil. So I tried a few things and I asked a lot of people and most are using that rockwool or hemp fibre and I tried both but wasn’t impressed and the cost was crazy I thought. So I was determined to find a way finally I stumbled upon Mr. Duzee1 and his TH-cam channel it’s called Keep on growin’ and one of his videos from more then three years ago he had put up and said about how to grow self-watering microgreens well I’ve not even been interested in them before but I watched it because I had seen a couple of his other videos that I found interesting and I just thought he was kind of unique and without a doubt had some knowledge and did a decent job explaining it in the kiss method which was exactly what I needed. Lol! Well for some reason I had never even thought that microgreens were really just a seedling but had a lot of them all together I don’t know why it never occurred to me but it hadn’t. Apparently if you were to be taught hydroponics in a structured environment the first thing you would be introduced to would be microgreens!! Who knew? I sure didn’t. Sooo in this one video he shows how to grow of all things lettuce seeds. No microgreens aren’t some special seed like I was thinking they must be. It was like a light bulb went off over my head and I thought as he was showing how to do this I thought wow I could take some of these out and put them in my NFT system and no more worries how to germinate and grow lettuce seeds or any other seeds really although so far I’ve only tried lettuce hhhmmm maybe I’ll start a little wee amount of tomato seeds this way?! Anyway since learning that one little step my ability to grow Lettuce has gone crazy!! In a very good way! Not only did I plant four different varieties of lettuce I thought or at least I hoped that while my lettuce was growing super fast in my NFT system the lettuce in my inverted take out container would be growing much slower because it was just drinking plain water not nutrient enriched although I have since added some just to keep them growing but I probably don’t have to. So my lettuce in my NFT system will give me 5 weeks of lettuce harvesting once a week an overhaul harvest and whenever we need a little here and there through the weeks. So I thought there’s no way I’m going to be able to slow down these microgreens to last six weeks before I’ll need them again, and here I still have almost full trays mind you the trays are much smaller 3”x4” maybe so then I thought I have to do more with this so I have these big baskets that fit into a 5gallonbucket perfectly they are really design I think for growing large things like broccoli and cauliflower or cabbage maybe I don’t know. So I thought why couldn’t I put the nutrient rich water just up to the bottom of this basket end take and put individual seedlings placing them so the roots stick down through the bottom of the basket and use hydroton pebbles to hold them in place and if I build the pebbles up high enough so that they are out of the water they should get algae on them. So that’s what I did as an experiment, my idea with this is that instead of harvesting weekly I’ll let these grow until they become full heads of 🥬 lettuce. Because I’ve yet to do that. So after I had the seedlings in and the pebbles I noticed that with all the slits in the basket that a lot of light was getting in to where the water is and once I put a bubbler in it was spraying water up on to the pebbles which cause algae and I don’t want that so I lined the insides of the bucket with tin foil shiny side facing towards the plants so that the grow lights will reflect off of it and make it much brighter because the grow lights were quite high. Anyway so I have that growing like that and the reason for the air stone/bubbler is because I’ve found any kind of plant in nutrient rich water that is just standing water begins to smell funky over time(maybe that’s why they say to change it so often?? Hhhhmmm) anyway when you had oxygen the water no longer has that icky smell at least that’s been my experience. So that is doing well but I still had loads of microgreens so I took four of my trays that have super deep cups and I put a plain tray with no holes under it and then I put a lid on top so kind of creating a mini greenhouse environment and I took the lettuce and I would rinse off the excess dirt and I would take a few microgreens together and just place them down in these trays and as long as there were enough seedlings together that they couldn’t fall down and through the hole at the bottom it just might work and the sides
      Of the cups are tall so they support the lettuce as it grows and this is not really a kratky method but I don’t have any bubblers in them either but I also don’t keep a lot of water in the trays just enough that they don’t run out and it’s really interesting how these are growin with the roots underneath all of the roots have knitted themselves together underneath. So now I can pick up the whole tray and none are going to fall through or anything because they are providing this structure of support for each other. I just find that so cool. Anyway so I have tons of lettuce growing now which is great we are keeping up with our demand and I’m going to take a big bag of lettuce to give to my daughter this weekend. They aren’t going on a honeymoon or anything and her fiancé loves my lettuce I took them a big ziploc bag a couple weeks ago and it reminds him of the lettuce his grandma used to grow in the yard. They couldn’t believe how crunchy it was. lol! Anyway just thought I’d share that.I hope my long txts aren’t annoying.

    Hi there! Thanks so much for all the helpful information. I am a pretty new gardener and I'm trying to grow a few things in containers, including bell peppers. They were doing really well with quick growth and nice firm leaves...and lately, there's a been a halt. I have actually quite a few peppers on one plant, but they don't seem to be getting bigger or changing color yet (still green). I have had them going for about 3 months or so now. Any helpful thoughts? I may be overwatering...still trying to find the balance between overwatering and underwatering! We've also had some really hot days here in CO and lately LOTS of rain (for us). I would appreciate any thoughts! THANKS! :)

    Hi guys, another good vid and particularly good timing as I'm about to stop picking early flowers on my larger plants. Some have nearly maxed out the space they have to grow and they are pushing laterals.
    1200 X 1200 tent 3 levels of racks, 50 plants (will need to be thinned).
    20-30 deg under a mix of fluro & LED, basically what ever was free 😀

    Mine dropped from extreme temps.
    So now what I can I do to encourage the plants to grow more blossoms?
    I'm guessing concentrating on watering them either a liquid 0-30-30 (or something like that). Liquid for immediate uptake vs the granulars that are slow release.

    I’ve live in Houston, TX and I’ve got a rocoto pepper I’m trying this year. I know you’ve said it is not a particularly easy plant, and you feel it is even less productive in the NE heat. So I’m just trying to get it through the hot Texas summer, and I think it’ll be a perfect winter pepper that will fruit for me in the colder months.
    My question is it is really flowering like crazy. It is actually a big beautiful plant with tons of the purple flowers. Do you think if I picked half the flowers, it might put in more energy to fruiting with the remaining flowers? I figure why not, I’m really planning on it being a winter plant anyway.

      Some flower drop is normal, maybe try reducing any fertilizer to keep nitrogen levels where they should be. Also, high heat or poor pollination can lead to more flower drop. 1 gallon is decent, but if you're growing a large type (like bell peppers, etc.) it may not be enough

    • @mandysyoutubething
      @mandysyoutubething ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PepperGeek thanks for the reply I think it's poor pollination because despite me shaking it like many suggested and you try and q-tips and stuff it still doesn't pollinate like it's not having a lot of pollen of it's own. It is however enjoying the figure container I put it in I made it out of two containers lol and I've been the only fertilizing it every couple of months it's an inside plant and I don't want it to get sick. Of course when every time I use this one fertilizer I got from the store I make it as they suggest for the directions and my aloe plant gets sick every time. I don't think I'm going to use it on my aloe anymore and just use the sticks. My pepper plant quit making flowers though.. probably ended its season.... • @nunyabisnass1141

    For me its just the weaker flowers that get dropped. Some nodes have up to 10 flowers, and i certainly dont expect all of those to remain. Another reason you may be dropping flowers is pest damage while the flower is developing. It can continue to grow but also be deformed with no stigma. I found that over fertilizing can also deform flowers. Getting a lot of flower growth too quickly probably upsets the hormones in the plant stuning a vital growth stage.
    This year im growing a meatier ghost pepper variety and everything about its growth is normal, except its stems are unusually straight and thick, and they are even out pacing my habeneros. If they turn out well maybe I'll try crossing them with bells or banana peppers just to see what happens.

    Adding cold water all over the leaves isnt good for the leaves. solar magnification transfer will burn the leaves and damage them. The formed droplets act as magnifers, so is counter-productive. Even if you have had luck, others in hot areas, tipically get higher solar hrs. This will burn the leaves.
