I lived near Dayton years ago. Dayton had been politically and socially corrupt for many decades. Every mayor used the office to appoint family and steal everything they could, and the population that habitually voted for them was infantile, damaged, and boring. HOWEVER, ten miles from the city center in any direction was a different world, the sun reappeared, the farms were beautiful, and no drug/criminal/welfare-addicted zombies. I might blow some minds, but much like this man, I voluntarily disconnected from the world for all of the same reasons described here. I cut my cable TV when my daughter was 4 because I didn't like her being advertised to and wanted to vet her entertainment consumption. This came up because I had taken my preliminary adventures into politics, discovered I'm more libertarian than anything and got a hell of a gander behind the curtain and once that happens, you can't unsee and unknow what you've been exposed to. I was already so grossed out by our government way back then... oh, about 17 years ago now. This is all my long-winded way of saying I have no idea who this guy is, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this chat.
I relate soooo fucking much to 97%of his views on technology. And I'm a total tech junkie but I hate my phone. Mostly because of the sweeping dragnet of personal data collection. I run open source everything and have been learning to build or mod gadgets to suit my needs for privacy. I have so many plugins and custom scripts running intervention in my browser. I had a pfsense firewall, but it croaked so I've been getting by on treating the symptoms till I can build another to cut it off at the source.
This is not what the internet was intended to be, and it makes me sick how it has been gutted and monopolized by the likes of google and everyone else in their tax bracket. Total bastardization. And my government allows it. I killed all my social media accounts, and the time I regained is what allowed me to learn programming and building gadgets. Before I killed my social media, I downloaded full sets of the data from all of them. I was horrified by the data that was in them besides my contributed content... horrified. You should download a backup if you haven't yet. It's enlightening AF. And the social dilemma documentary is not conspiracy theory, Watch it if you haven't. The cognitive dissonance alone if you keep your pages will do some significant damage.
Anyway, I talk too much knowing no one gives a shit, so, I'll leave it here, and this was a true pleasure to listen to. Whoever he is, he's got a new fan.

@@avalon4693 well, it starts with having a certain amount of confidence with technology. Heads up for another long post. You have to be willing to break shit if you change the wrong setting or install a bad script. But the easiest place to start is to get a real firewall that will show you every single packet path to and from a source and destination. I used pfsense which is a small build of Linux (actually Minix based or BSD, one of the two linux-like systems) with every tool you could need to secure and have full control of your home network. You can put it on an old pc with a network card (preferably something capable of high amounts of traffic) with two ports. You would run your modem ethernet output into one port, and from the other port to your router. With the firewall handling security you can open the router up (obviously keep it password protected but disable any security features as to not cause network issues and it will also run faster) and use it like always. The firewall will scrutinize the traffic and keep detailed logs. It is extremely feature rich in what you can control and monitor. If you aren't comfortable with building a firewall, you can purchase one in small compact form ready to go. Or if you have experience with virtual environments, you can run it in a bubble, but I preferred to dedicate bare metal to it because virtual has its own set of pros and cons.
But there are other open source operating systems similar to pfsense, so you could google "build a custom firewall" and "foss firewall software" to research what might work best for you. Foss=free and open source. Free doesn't necessarily mean no charge, but rather "liberated." From data collection, from license restrictions, etc. I may be toying with something smaller to see if it works for my needs and converting a pi board into a black hole which is just a place traffic goes to die in silence. If configured not to accept traffic from whatever ip or url it just goes straight to the circular file without notification as per your firewall rules.
I had to learn all this stuff at proverbial gunpoint. I once ran a fairly successful internet radio station for a decade when a chain of events killed it. It started with the RIAA threatening to take money I never made on it retroactively two years and the current year on a per song per listener basis which mathed out to like $150K and not even terrestrial radio pays on a fee scructure like that (it was overturned but going off air for a few weeks did major damage to our listener base), to partnering with a douchbag of epic proportion and going back to solo, to pandora taking out the middle man AKA all of our volunteer DJs worldwide and providing the same service at a nominal fee. When I shut it down, smart phones were the new badassery on the scene and after building and babysitting a stream server, a chat server, a webserver and managing a slew of adult DJs that you wouldn't know were adults by behavior including training new ones remotely, and also hosting several different shows myself through the years-- 24/7/365, for ten years straight, mind you -- I didn't care if I ever looked at a PC again. I wouldn't trade a day of it, but I was relieved of the burden. But what I intended to be an extended pause from all things PC, turned into extreme neglect to my network of which there were several pcs. Like 5 or 6 that barely got the time of day, for like 5 years. But the kicker is they were still allowed to run minor functions and the kiddo used one for her homework, etc. blah blah.
If there is anything I didn't consider, while knowing full well it goes against best practices, it is this. I didn't keep up with updates and had forgotten that they were left on manual update because having it automatically do the thing and reboot is bad for business, especially live broadcasts. Offline servers are bad. But out of date computers with gaping security flaws are much, much worse and by the time I decided I wanted to save money and kill my music subscription in favor of setting up a small home music host from my several terabyte music library and COULD NOT BUILD A SUCCESSFULLY RUNNING AND FUNCTIONING SERVER TO SAVE MY LIFE, I learned I was not the administrator and my network was infested with hackers wall to wall including my surveillance system.
5 years is a long time in computer years. But I guess you can file it under "It won't happen to me. i got nothing of value that anyone would want to hack me for" but little did I realize that sport hacking and pen testing was a thing on the rise. It's illegal to do without permission, but ethics don't exist in everyone and likes of Shodan made me quite visible to the web at large, also a new feature of the WWW I learned about the hard way. The short version is it took a year before I never saw any traces of foreign traffic activity in my network, and I couldn't figure out where the leak was FOR A YEAR. I still can't pinpoint it, but it stopped eventually. I removed my modem and put in a new docsis 3.1 and first flashed a custom firmware on my old router (which is also another option as long as you don't have a Broadcom chip in your router. You can write new firmware to it that opens up its full capabilities) before building a firewall. Before all that, though, I had to rip all my hard drives out and run live off the ram, driveless, and learn Linux against my will in an effort to outsmart the invaders while being deficient in knowledge. And cramming all things network security in my tiny little brain.
Trying to explain to people who live in the same house that we are hacked and having them look at you like you're growing a third arm out of your forehead was more than I could stand, or worse be waved off and treated as crazy or paranoid, like with visible pity. Since that ordeal which was a year long of bullshit and getting caught up on all I didn't know from 5 years of tech evolvement, lesson learned the hardest way possible. I cannot begin to describe the creep factor of having some fucker in your PC gaining access to your tablet via network sharing and installing a remote control software app to control the android box on my television set. Like, gtfo And I'm paranoid? lol heebeegeebees. That was quite the motivator.
As for building or modding gadgets. whenever you get a "smart" gadget and you are forced to sign up for an account just to use it, those are the things I try to mod. I also have Home assistant which is new to me and i'm sttill learning, but you can effectively take some of those connected gadgets and contain them within the network and retain functionality but your data is safe at home. Sometimes someone has already done it on a device and give a neat tutorial to follow. Sometimes, I essentially have to gut out some hardware and replace with some custom esp32(arduino based wifi capable programmable controller) alternative. I may have to print some new shroud to house the new shape and make it look neat, but yeah. This is what regaining hours a day gave me time to learn and youtube has been a wealth of info.
If I may make another suggestion, find ways to cut google out of your life and if you must use it, sandbox the shit out of it. no, it's not going to ruin your phone to get apps from some other entity, though they would have you believe otherwise. Sandbox Facebook, too. and Twitter, and amazon, Get a throw away voip number if you are forced to give text 2FA codes, or even a burner phone. Look into a vpn. Self host a personal vpn server at home to remotely connect to so you can remain secure and encrypted when out and about. Check out Rob Braxton on YT if you are really serious about learning security and cryptography. He breaks it down into digestible, comprehendible blocks of information in simple language. It's quite the undertaking and I am not finished with all I want to do, because life gets in the way of geeking out. These are just some humble suggestions. I hope it wasn't a complete TL;DR

@@thepeacefulbearbeer I feel like this is a bit of a difference in interests. I am fully capable of getting consumed by my technology but so is my husband and the reason is the alternative way we get information and entertainment. When we got together, we were both equally tech savvy, but I far surpassed him in that department when I took over the server management of our radio station in the name of keeping it all current. But I know some people who aren't tech savvy in the least and see it as such a foreign and useless concept, but that is a perception from one who doesn't do the tech thing. It's totally okay, but to demonize another for their interest in it isn't fair. I'm not saying that is your situation, because obviously I have no idea. But also to be fair, as well, there are limits to healthy amounts of screen time. Finding that balance is personal. This world is rapidly becoming more and more dependent on or is completely run by technology. Kids are being taught programming and electronics in schools along with 2x3=6. (that's 2nd grade) but also that's if they are teaching anything worthwhile at all, right?
I was born at a time when computers in the home were rare, so I got to experience the whole pre-internet life of finding my friends by the pile of bikes in whoever's yard they happened to gather at. Streetlight curfew, optional seatbelts in some of our older vehicles we had, riding in the truck bed, generally making fun out of nothing, and then I built my first PC out of spare parts when I was 19. I could see the endless possibilities from day one. Which for me was really in the 80s when I got my first opportunities on an old apple II through my school. But the capability to connect with someone in Japan in real time without the old long distance fees to share more than just voice over a crappy staticky connection, but video, photo, play games, share news. It was all very exciting and made the world much smaller.
Some don't know how to walk away from it. Social media is mostly to blame for the addictive nature they actually intentionally and nefariously designed to be as such. For me, it was the way it can be used to hurt people because if you put a keyboard and screen + miles between people suddenly people become braver and meaner than if you were in the same room. I refuse to play that shit. I don't do the passive aggressive headgamey shit because I am an adult. But it brings the worst out of people who tend toward that kind of thinking. You just get to see the fully liberated version than that of them in person. Me, being on the lower end of the spectrum (Autism) I literally am incapable of the types of headgames people come up with because I don't think like that. I'm not capable of formulating such a scenario. But I have learned to pick up on it when it's blatant and seeing my sister do and say mean shit intended for me, disguised as something else to create plausible deniability and then gaslighting, and saying it to someone else with an embedded dogwhistle meant for me was really the last straw after being harassed by people who were supposedly my friends for months and i shut down that account and opened one incognito with a small circle of close people. Obviously my family should fit that criteria. I should also note that I am used to this shit. Been picked on, mobbed, bullied, ghosted, y ou name it, my whole life, but only figured out why about 3 years ago. I had been estranged from one side of my family for a long long time and thought we were all past that shit in our adulthood. But my own family would assume the worst of me rather than give me the benefit of the doubt, or even come to me with their problem directly over whatever it was they were being shitty about and was never informed. I don't read minds and I don't play petty games, nor do I appreciate the treatment. So yeah. It wasn't worth being villified as a game anymore. I don't need people to know everything I'm doing ALL the time. Nor do I need the validation of "likes". I enjoy and require my solitude, actually. I didn't particularly care for the memories feature after my dad passed and his pics kept coming up, and I especially hated how it was used as a tool to hurt others while the site was selling my personal data to the highest bidder. But giving it up cold turkey was like quitting anything else. i didn't know what to do with my idle mind so I chose to learn new things. Took wasted time and made it constructive with a lateral move.
I rewind to who I was 5 years ago and compare to now and all I have learned on my own... The differences are worlds apart. Hubs and I have essentially switch places. I fix all the stuff, he cooks all the food. lol I even work on the car because I have trust issues and it's a sort of rare limited edition little convertible two seater that I love to bits with parts that are hard to come by. I hate getting greasy but I love saving money and wouldn't trust a mechanic in this town as far as I could throw them. it's ironic to me how social media was supposed to be about staying connected and opening up opportunities, but it was literally the opposite. Opportunity waster. I would never have had the fortitude to do the shit I do now had I not walked the fuck away from the drama llama social media hate vortex.
Once again rambling as if people want to read it, but there ya go.

The thing that struck me was how Ari talked about how free people in other countries are. When I went to South America I realized they had every thing an American has but there wasn't so "policed" so to speak. There were poor but there were zero bums, people there would just sell things on the street rather than begged.

Likely why I was ' laid off' as an educator. My education system expected me to 'push' university...not trades...more importantly that 'gap year' is NOT an opportunity to party, play video games, but to be productive in some way to gain experience.
