Just heard the sad news of the passing of the ANFIELD IRON TOMMY SMITH today 13/04/19 never will forget his bullet of a header in this the first of the European cup wins LFC LEGEND YNWA TOMMY SMITH
The last 10 minutes or so were so joyful. Just listen to the fans... And Barry Davies' commentary is beautiful - like Clive Tyldesley in 1999 I think he had a few words prepared for if it was a victory for the English side. "The scoreboard puts up one simple word..You find it on the Mersey.. and the name.. is Liverpool"
May 28,2022 that's, I think is the most important game ,we ever playing, going for #7 ,especially, while Real Madrid are going for #14, hopefully, justice reigns ,next Saturday
I was 16 but I was not missing this game. I hitched to London for the FA cup final versus Manchester United, and then on to Dover-calais. I went from ther to Rome. I did not speak Italian or French and did not actually know the way, but I made it. My best ever day - UNTIL ISTANBUL !!!!
***** haha you are a bloody legend. That would've been some journey in 1977. This in time before schengen area policy came into effect. I'm born 1975 so forget 1977. 2005 I'm watching on TV in Australia.
Watched it on a black and white TV in a hotel as a 10 year old in full Liverpool kit in Spain on holiday in a room full of Germans. I’d been to Wembley 4 days earlier to see them lose the cup final. I will never forget that night and the Germans sent our table a bottle of champagne after the final whistle. Very happy memories 😊
RIP Ray Clemence. That save from Stielike 1:06:08 was the turning point in the match. Less than 2 minutes later Tommy Smith heads Liverpool into the lead.
It was 40 years ago today Bob Paisley got his team to play and in such a marvelous way I remember watching the 1977 FA Cup Final four days earlier and seeing United celebrate their goals wildly and with passion so I was delighted we won this marvelous trophy but gutted that Italian tv banned goal celebrations and cut away straightaway to replays of the goal

first time I watch the European cup 1977 was when was in boarding school run by nuns supported Liverpool all my life watching Liverpool on television lifting that big trophy in the air was very special Dave from Birkenhead
Dave Griffiths always good that Birkenhead gets a mention. Steve Wilson (BBC) at same school at the time in Prenton. Final was great, but St.Etienne was life changing.
My novelisations state that the 1977 European Cup used the 'BBC ACTION REPLAY' caption when showing the goals in slow motion. The MOTD 1975 until 1977 style team line up graphics and the football shaped clock also appeared.
i remember watching this game with my dad we were celtic fans (father died 84) he just didn't like germans so (i was born in Germany) when Liverpool scored we jumped n screamed like banshee's i liked steve highway & keegan in those days + in 2017 i hope u win the premiership i would also think it would be a nice touch if u did win it dedicated to the 96 that would be so fitting in my opinion so great video get some celtic 1s up plz sir thank you HH YNWA
For me they were the best club side in Europe throughout the 70’s and Hennes Weisweiler the best manager. He made them into a great side without ever buying a star player and having to sell a few and left Udo Lattek to carry on the good work. The ball was played into feet which demands a lot of skill in screening the ball; accuracy of passing; judging when and where to lay a pass so that it would not be intercepted and so that it could be easily received by a colleague. On top of that because opponents tried to stop them playing, there were times when a player received a ball and was immediately put in trouble by quick tackling opponents, but like all great football sides when that happened, Borussia always had men in support in space, available to receive easy balls laid off early. These are the hallmarks of good football, and through a lot of hard work with the ball in training, Borussia not only produced top drawer football but made it pay. But for the infamous 'Coke can' incident against Inter Milan in 1971, they probably would have reached the European Cup final the next year.
I think the game was very close to even. Certainly the fact that both Vogts, Heynckes and Witkamp were not in the best of form was a key factor to Liverpool's success. Both teams had chances but Liverpool, luckier or more determined , finally made it to achieve gold!
A tragedy the great Moenchengladbach didn't win the European Cup here. Wimmer, Heynkes and one or two others a bit over the top by this point. However if Uli Stielike had buried that chance just before Smith's goal, it would have been flagons of Lowenbrau back at the Bokelberg.
Nah, Liverpool would have come back. It was their destiny after the St Etienne game. They won it already then. Just like in 2019 when they beat Barcelona in the semi final. But yes Monchengladbach were the best team never to win it. For sure. Them and Leeds.
Great !

This was not really classic that it is sometimes known as. The hard, bumpy pitch precluded that. However, it should have been taken more notice of by football authorities in Britain, particularly the FA. Liverpool showed how British football could succeed at the highest level with what were, by European / World standards, ordinary players. If only the England team could have found a way of using the Liverpool possession, pass, and move game...
Wouldn;t say they did play the better football. Think Liverpool were the better side overhall in this gaem, but Borussia had a good spell in the first part of the second half
It’s a shame that Moenchengladbach met Liverpool in 1977 when they were getting slightly passed their peak. For me they were the best club side in Europe throughout the 70’s and Hennes Weisweiler the best manager and without ever buying a star player and having to sell a few of their own, as they couldn’t complete financially with other clubs. Through a lot of hard work with the ball in training, Borussia not only produced top drawer football but made it pay. Unfortunately they had problems dealing with the aerial play of English clubs and never really had a top class striker to play up with Jupp Heynkes in the early 70’s.
Ah when " British" football really was British. Not like today when the top teams are made up of 95% foreigners and idiot commentators refere to English/British football.
