RIP Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, 25 January 1942 - 5 January 2014 Mario Coluna, 6 August 1935 - 25 February 2014 Cesare Maldini, 5 February 1932 - 3 April 2016
Avevo 12 anni . Grande vero centravanti moderno Altafini.
Fantastic to see footage of the entire 90 mins! Legendary players and an important match in history. For those interested: 21:17 Benfica 1-0 Milan (Eusebio) 1:04:00 Benfica 1-1 Milan (Jose Altafini) 1:12:50 Benfica 1-2 Milan (Jose Altafini) 1:39:21 A.C. Milan become the first Italian team to win the European Cup. A fascinating and pivotal moment: 1:06:42 A minute after Altafini's equalizer for Milan, Gino Pivatelli commits a cynical foul on Mario Coluna to stop the counter attack, injuring the creative playmaker and putting him out of the match. There were no substitutions at the time, so Benfica were down to 10 men for the remainder of the game. Milan score winning goal about 10 minutes later. Nereo Rocco (coach for Milan) specifically brought Pivatelli into the final to man mark Coluna in one of the first examples of a team employing tactics specifically to stop an opponents danger player. This is an example of so-called "negative" football that stems from a philosophy in Italian football prominent for decades known as the "right of the weak", where lesser teams could be a bit dirty to get the win if needed. Italian football considered their athletes to be physically weaker than much of Europe so they had to "more clever" than opponents to get the advantage. This didn't really end until Arrigo Sacchi's Milan of the early 1990's. Jose Mourinho and Diego Simeone, both men who were influenced by Italian football, are examples of modern day managers who employ that tactic to great effect when their teams score a goal and then defend that advantage by dropping deep and employing a "less than pure" method of stopping opposing players. The foul is still a sore spot for the players in that final. Watch the interchange between Coluna (black dude, white suit) and Milan captain Cesare Maldini (right, blue suit). Journalist Gianni Mina (left, dude with mustache) comments on the roughness of the foul and asks if, 24 years later, if Maldini will say if the foul was ordered by Rocco or not. Maldini says no, Pivatelli did not intentionally injure Coluna, but it was definitely a foul. Coluna angrily says to look at how far away the ball is when the foul is committed; still of the opinion he was taken out in cold blood in order to stop the creativity and flow of passes to Eusebio, Torres, Santana and Augusto. The woman's voice is the Italian-Portuguese translator for Coluna.
Portugal actually did something similar when they played against Brazil at the 1966 World Cup. In that game, the Portuguese player João Morais was tasked with marking Pelé, committing several fouls against the Brazilian star player, for which he was never cautioned or sent off. Portugal would win the game 3-1, with two goals by Eusebio.
@@Atombender But...Pelé was injured since the game with Bulgária, he shouldn't have played against Portugal..also the Brazilian team was getting very old,had few chances of passing to next stage.

Hello there, Mr. I'm a Benfica fan, but I have no knowledge about the preliminary rounds of the 1962-63 edition of the European Cup. Could you tell me what happened in the matches between Dundee United and AC Milan?
the typical british frustrations. When italian football mattered more than it nowdays matters , britons complain because they lost and so they say it is not valid like the children when they don't win the games they are taking part in.
what kind of cheating are you talking about ?? Milan - Dundee United 5-1 ( and I love scottish football, and I also I consider it also greatwer than the English football too ) and Milan- ipswich 3-0.Where are your proofs??? A kind of hatred and despise that stems from the simple ancient prejudices towards the italians??? Find proofs , then you are allowed to talk. Crushing victories are the ones of Milan, the rest is boredom.

In Italy 5-1 for milan in scothland 0-1
Italians knew that had to stop Coluna, the team motor..and José Augusto, the right winger
Germano didn't played, the best central back in Europe between 1960 and 1965!!
