For all the commenters saying the Norris 10-second stop go was too much- it's not negotiable. It was a penalty for breaching FIA SAFETY rules- it's in the FIA rule book that applies at every level of circuit racing that double waved yellows means there is a serious incident, slow down and be be prepared to stop- basically half assume a red could be waved. In this case the question is not whether the penalty was harsh, because once the double yellows are waved, the required actions and any penalties apply even if the double yellows were thrown incorrectly. The issue is whether double yellows was the correct call. I'm not sure it it was, but guess what, it doesn't matter because they were waved. A few years ago someone stuck it in during a club-level FFord race and was still in the car. The marshalls put out double waved yellows in the sector, and after what was about two laps reported to us that he had a likely broken leg so red flags were waved. Meanwhile, six drivers set personal best laps while there was double yellows. We fined and penalised them all and referred them to driving standards who hit them again. You don't f around with safety.
@justinthaim8879 and @tom.m : First up, I'm not speaking as a fan boy of any driver or the FIA or F1, but as someone with a race licence for 40 years, officials licence for 20 and as a solicitor for 28. You are confusing two separate issues. Issue 1- whether Race Control at Qatar (not the FIA) followed the guidelines- it doesn't matter and is something for review afterwards. Separate Issue 2- the penalty was issued because a double waved yellow was thrown, the drivers HAD to follow the rules surrounding that double yellow NO EXCUSES, and Lando didn't. It had to be issued then. Andea Stella admitted on TV the throttle traces showed Lando didn't lift. The penalty was deserved because Lando broke the SAFETY rules. Whether throwing the flags was or wasn't correct is not relevant- double yellows had been thrown, the double yellow rules applied, and Lando got pinged. Basic law- keep separate issues separate. You as a driver NEVER EVER question yellow flags- you follow them, because you don't know what's going on. Remember, even after a couple of laps, Bottas still ran over the mirror... While it's about a safety issue, if you want to put it another (and not applicable) way, all the other drivers followed the rules and lifted. The other drivers slowed down but Lando got an advantage by breaking the rule- some could call it cheating.
@@justinthaim8879 and Lando breached the double waved yellow rule that was applicable when they were thrown and that rule was followed by all the other drivers. Lando was wrong.
What grinds my gears is how Norris admitted he didnt see the double waved yellow, whilst there is a marshal waving them, digital flag signs flashing and bright yellow lights flickering in his dashboard. What goes on in his head when he is racing? How come EVERYONE noticed, except Norris. And WHY ddint his TEAM notified him of the double waved yellow.... Its mistakes like that that cost Norris and McLaren championships.
Norris has gone the same way every other driver has gone from karting onwards and i dont remember that Karts have a Dashboard or Radio communication to baby you through a Yellow Flag. Either you see it or you get a penalty.. should be easy as that. Clear Driver error.
Ah no Hamilton's in particular is in keeping of what is expected when you exceed the pit lane speed limit by between 6 & 15km/h. Most pit lane infringements are 1 or 2 km/h at most. Lano's has a precedent with Mazepin getting the same penalty for the same thing in 2021. Not slowing for double waved yellow is a significant breach.
The 10 second stop go was not negotiable. Double waved yellows means slow down and be ready to stop- it is one step short of a red flag. It's a SAFTY issue, it's in the FIA rule book, not F1, it applies to all levels of racing.
@@exF3-86 The stop/go is perfectly fine for the act itself, as an isolated incident. I think people are annoyed in the audacity of the FIA punishing a driver for a safety issue, that their negligence played a massive part in. Why was that even a double waved yellow? It is a single yellow flag until you decide a marshall is required to recover it and there isn't a gap large enough to do so safely. Then you deploy a VSC to recover it. Instead, this was the chain of events: Repeated switches between Double Yellows, Slippery Surface (Yellow with Red stripe) and Green, 5 times each in 20 seconds - Double Yellows for just 28 seconds (Lando got the penalty here) - Slippery Surface for 2 minutes - Green flag - 2 minutes later Bottas hit the mirror - 3 minutes after that the Safety Car was deployed. That is just incompetence.
Verstappen's penalty was bs. Lando's penalty was way too harsh considering how they dealt with the situation themselves with the yellow flags. And Sainz got a puncture that could cost them the constructors championship. How on earth could these so called experts be so bad?
The wing mirror stuff was the most predictable stuff I've seen in years. Absolutely everyone saw every bit of that coming, except the FIA. Zero excuses. Then Lando's penalty just felt criminal. Even if the rulebook says it's automatically a stop/go, punishments should have degrees and fit the crime. The stop/go penalty reflects the danger of speeding through a dangerous section of track. If that section of track was 35-second-penalty level dangerous, then where the hell was the safety car for the previous ten minutes? Lando posed no risk to anyone, thus deserved a penalty fitting for having gained a few tenths unfairly. Michael Masse is still having rotten fruit thrown at him for Max getting an extra 7 points. That stop/go gave Ferrari, what, 19?!
What happened to the offside VAR thing they setup after 2021? Is that just total rubbish or what? Because that extra scrutiny should've helped for a situation exactly like this in Qatar.
Probably the worst weekend for race officials I remember in recent memory. All over the place. I don't give a single iota if Kimi got the same penalty in 2017 and if it's a "bY tHe BoOk pEnAlTy", they clearly did not give a SINGLE crap about the mirror on track, but are treating Norris as if he was out of control dangerous because of it. It's ridiculous.

The main difference between Max and Lando is that Max thinks during a race. He knows the rule book, for example and is aware of everything going on. Lando seems to have brain farts sometimes. He has shown this season he doesn't know the rules (e.g. just two examples- Brazil aborted start procedure, not lifting on a double yellow) or doesn't think of consequences (e.g. Hungary- if he'd let Oscar past straight away he was then in a position to race him and had time to get the position back). All drivers should know the rules because you can also use them to your advantage- I did many times as did others. Lando needs to work with someone with the demeanor of a Lauda. Better still, he needs to watch Oscar's approach more closely and learn
they are doing like nascar and trying to manipulate de championship to raise the interest but actually destroying the sport in the meantime (safety car just after piastri pit many many laps after they should have done it). Next : playoffs at the end of the season 🤣
The Norris penalty was a bit harsh but Mazepin and Latifi got the same penalty for the exact same infringement in 2021 and Räikkönen got the same in Spa 2017. I agree the race director fucked up but the stewards had nothing to do with it.
I swear they're just doing a random draw for penalties at this point, like the soon to be defunct MiniDrivers. Although maybe the stewards were watching the Liverpool game.

FIA were insufferable during this weekend, I don't know what they are trying to achieve by "netflixing" the constructors championship so it's prolonged to the last race
They got so much wrong. Mainly of course the mirror which will stain this sport for years to come. But by the rules, they were spot on about Norris. Ask yourself this. Kf the situations had been reversed and Max got the stop-go for not slowing, the British fans and media would be delighted and say he deserved it.
Isn´t it great after al the MBS interventions.....the quality of the Steward decision making is just like the lottery....And the best player of the bunch can influence them....hahahaha
they could've easily done VSC like FCY (full yellow) in imsa or yellow in sectors 1 & 3 and a marshal from pitlane could've ran out and picked it up in 10 secs just as the last car passed it, so much unnecessary drama added and stop-go 10 sec penalty with a bunched up field is totally brutal on a driver who is sweating it out in a race, if they had an ex-driver in stewards they wouldn't have given that, a +10s to race time would've been ok now they should go blatant to make Ferrari win in abu dhabi like in 2021 for max
Fia does nothing to prevent cars running over the mirror as Bottas did plus next damaged cars and then they dare to call out Lando for not enough safety while their president is bragging about it in interviews 😂 I don't care about Lando at all, just assuring everybody - penalty yes, even though it was like last second yellow from his view, but too harsh. They could have easily prevented Bottas, Lewis and Carlos getting damaged from that fricking mirror... Could have done literally anything...
Lando getting a penalty is fine he didn’t slow under yellows but Max has done the same thing this season and gotten I believe a 5 second penalty. There is no consistency and may even now cost them the constructors
Wrong, a 10 second stop/go is the standard penalty for a double yellow infringement during a race. Max has not done that this season, the last time it happened was in 2021 with Mazepin and Latifi

@@tom.m And if Lando had followed the double waved yellow rule- like all the other drivers- we wouldn't be in this mess either.
@@exF3-86 Yes. Two things can be true...

I miss Charlie.
@@rdspamyeah, the FIA really disintegrated when he passed and Jean’s term as president ended and Mohammad Ben sulayem twatted into office
He was blind to Hamilton's violations, though. Even at his last F1 race.
@@Cloxxki Just false innit. Don't lie, it's not a good look.
I vote for matt and tommy as race director and stewards ...
Dude was tunnel visioned on catching Max. And made a mistake. Sounds like a good chunk of his season honestly.
Norris has gone the same way every other driver has gone from karting onwards and i dont remember that Karts have a Dashboard or Radio communication to baby you through a Yellow Flag. Either you see it or you get a penalty.. should be easy as that. Clear Driver error.
the ferraris didnt notice either apparently
Wrong lap. On the lap where he actually got penalised there was no digital flag or anything on the dash. Watch Jolyon Palmer's analysis.
Some of these penalties were totally out of proportion
10 sec stop/go for driving past a wing mirror without slowing.
1 lap later: "Ok everyone, just ignore that mirror. Green flag"
It's a multi-billion-dollar sport that is officiated worse than a local karting race.
SMH 🤯 The stewards must be penalized for the final race. 🤔
Remember them saying some group out there bought a big stake into sauber
Breaking: Bottas gets a lifetime ban for driving over that mirror.
Tommy owes Owen Wilson some copyright money lol. "Woooow"
My boy Oscar looks like a zombie with that lighting/hat.
Congratulations to the Qatar GP Race Director on completeing his second & last race.
Imagine one weekend without complaints by fans about correctly applied penalties. What a world that could be
We're a football fanbase now unfortunately, not possible
@@WickerMan98 yep
a few points;
a) The fia (more specifically ben sulayem) sacked the race director. The new race director that was here for Qatar has in the last two weeks directed:
1. Macao grandprix
2. afterwards with only very short notice a flyover to las Vegas (16 hours behind Macao time, so huge hangover) directed his first F1 Grandprix at a street circuit (notoriously chaotic)
3. directed the f2 races in Qatar (again a hangover and the fia sacked the f2 race director and thus he is pulling double duty)
4. directed the Qatar grandprix
b) Norris Stop and Go is 100% correct. A double yellow means that you NEED to slow down and be prepared to stop and not doing that is actually endangering the live of strangers
c) The mirror needed to be cleaned up immediatly, no excuse for not doing that
Additional Note, according to the german/austrian newspaper Motorsport Magazin (very reliable in the past), the punctures of Sainz and Hamilton were caused by them using the tires for to long, NOT debris.
All in all, a Clown show with the race director probably having the least fault considering the circumstances, and ben sulayem needs to be sacked asap as he is the one that was responsible for the overworked race director to begin with
I watched the whole video willing Tommy to get a better haircut. I couldn’t focus on anything else.
I just came from the podcast and also reviewing the FIA “statement” and l just have to say as Tommy says, when we as viewers know enough to say VSC clear as day - the fact they waited 4 laps and for a car to literally RUN OVER a mirror on track - I cannot deal with these people 🫥 - also so happy for my precious Zhou the goat
as you commented the yellows were on of on off no wonder it was confusing
I hope so badly their will be a change soon. It's not sustainable at all anymore.
8:18 Was it double yellow? I remember it being the yellow - green - yellow - green moment and the yellow light was NOT flashing on the monitor left.
yes
yes it was, if you look up to slow mo they (f1 youtube) posted, you can see it
FIA are Amateurs.
They were waiting for max to get a flat before sending the safety car!
I agree with that….wait and see if it screws up Max somehow!!
The double mirror thinf was ridiculousl.. what were the thinking for 4 laps
Im surprised Brad Pitt didn't get a penalty
Shout out to the driver of the day, Zhou Guanyu
Sorry everyone, I think it was my weekend to be race director and I overslept.
👍😂😂
Your livestream really needs live timing, compared to other F1 watchalongs its behind. Hope it's something that can come next season
I mean, Lando's penalty was consistent with the rule book, we've just not had that happen in a race since 2021 so we all forgot!
@@warbi505 Lando gets a 35-sec penalty for being 0.5 faster than Max for a fallen mirror on track that the race control didn't deem important enough as to leave it there for ages.
@@soundscape26 The mirror situation is the fia's fault, that's true, but Lando got a penalty according to his actions, it's not that he was 0.5 faster, it's about not slowing down under a double yellow which is really dangerous and punished harshly.
@@soundscape26I hope Norris compensates you well for being his personal PR person 🤣. You are going around shamelessly acting like he was wronged when he got a deserved penalty straight out from the rule book.
@@Alexgbohe It's only dangerous if the situation warants that label, the double yellow was rescinded soon after Lando failed to slow down and the mirror stayed there
It's called "SAFETY" CAR for a reason....
Waiting as long as they did for the mirror to get shattered and 2 cars getting a puncture before finally doing something when a 15 second VSC could've covered it is an absolute joke. I agree that Lando being given +10s for failing to slow under double yellows was fair, but it's an absolute f*cking joke to make it a stop/go. It's like the Stewards are just making up new rules at this point.
Punctures were because of tyre wear
@@hipotenuza5663 Did you watch the race? Bottas drove his car on the mirror and smashed it into many pieces. Sainz and HAM came immediately afterward and drove on broken glass. They had it on TV the whole scene. What are you talking about?
Ignoring double yellow is standard 10 sec stop and go. Austrian gp 2021. both Mazepin and Latifi got the same penalty for it, so don't start complaining about that now.

Doublee waved yellow is a fia Safety rule, it applies to everyone, slow down and prepare to stop, context does not matter in the slightest, ignoring double waved yellow in any situation is a 10 second stop and go
EVEN if double waved yellow was incorrect to wave, you MUST slow down
Guess how many 'WOWs' are in this video.
FIA were insufferable during this weekend, I don't know what they are trying to achieve by "netflixing" the constructors championship so it's prolonged to the last race
Tommy "WOW" count anyone?
Hardly disgraceful penalties, he didn’t slow for a double waved yellow. Simple.
They got so much wrong. Mainly of course the mirror which will stain this sport for years to come. But by the rules, they were spot on about Norris. Ask yourself this. Kf the situations had been reversed and Max got the stop-go for not slowing, the British fans and media would be delighted and say he deserved it.
At least Massi was fxkn consistent for 99% of the year
Isn´t it great after al the MBS interventions.....the quality of the Steward decision making is just like the lottery....And the best player of the bunch can influence them....hahahaha

well, maybe that's what happens when, say, the big boss of a company fires sort of half the employees? maaaaaybe some chaos is inevitable
The penalties to hamilton and norris was to make everyone shut up about british bias xd
Some of your reaction’s are so over the top 😂
I have a theory that this is on purpose so that they can bring Masi back.
Just wait for next year.
they could've easily done VSC like FCY (full yellow) in imsa or yellow in sectors 1 & 3 and a marshal from pitlane could've ran out and picked it up in 10 secs just as the last car passed it, so much unnecessary drama added
and stop-go 10 sec penalty with a bunched up field is totally brutal on a driver who is sweating it out in a race, if they had an ex-driver in stewards they wouldn't have given that, a +10s to race time would've been ok
now they should go blatant to make Ferrari win in abu dhabi like in 2021 for max
So it turns out firing all the people who knew what they were doing WAS a bad idea?
Why? Because the rules were actually followed for once?
@@PineappleBuster They spent 4 laps with their thumbs up their arse not doing a VSC when it was blatantly obvious it needed one.

This race was so messy 😭
Hilarious that the other Racing Championship under the FIA stewardship follows their own procedures, meanwhile, F1 is a joke.
they should have given Lando the 10 sec immediately when he didnt slow down on yellow flag.
"LANDO! NO WAY! ...oh no, Max has got it" sums it up.

Both Lewis and Carlos's races got screwed due to FIA incompetence
Easy fix, VSC, with a closed pitlane, clean it up nothing changes. Well apart from ppl being cheeky with VSC if to much mess safety car. Done
How Max just flipped the weekend.

NO
DTS is gonna be good next year.
On the plus side, F1 TV direction hasn't been too bad lately.
