If I could pick JUST ONE player out of every NBA player in history, to build a team around, it would be Bird. Perfect team player. All the skills you could want. Unlike today, there was never any drama or bickering with his teammates. Larry would do what was necessary for the TEAM. No selfishness. A motor second to none. Tough as nails. I can't think of another player, who was more clutch when it counted. I can't remember another player that would make the opposing team's fans feel so helpless. If he got the ball during a close game, you were jumping off the couch, yelling at the TV....because you KNEW he was going to hit the winning shot to beat your team. Dude was unbelievable.

Larry had no fundamental weaknesses and he created hall of famers just by being on his team. He made everyone immensely better.

What separates Larry for me is that he was telling everyone what he was going to do and they couldn't stop him in a era that was physical and you could hand check and pretty much hold somebody

I would take a healthy Larry Bird over anybody - he did everything and made his teammates score and made them better. Look how fast Boston improved when they got him. They were in last place and after a year with Bird, they won the championship. How long did it take Jordan - that's right - a long time. It took Jordan a long time to understand how to get his team winning as a team. A healthy Bird is a very scary thing!

I hate when y’all speak on shit with zero context as to why. Jordan didn’t get the benefit being drafted to a historic franchise with elite college prospects coming in that turned into hall of famers in that span where he wasn’t winning. He was playing with role players and eventually young developing Scottie who took a few years to come into his own. It was jordan by himself vs a stacked conference filled with teams with 2-3 allstar players per team. Who was he supposed to beat by himself? Not even just jordan, but also Dom Wilkins and, and later on Barkley. How do u supposed jordan beat the Celtics with a collection of talent over the decade that included bird, Mchale, parish, DJ, Walton, Ainge. Or the stacked 76ers or the deep pistons. Not to mention solids squads with hof talent like the cavs and bucks. Y’all always find a way to throw an out of context shot a jordan while bigging up bird. For what?

      @@TheIcemanthomas
After saying all that do you believe that a new to the league Micheal Jordan was making the players around him better? Bird could do that upon entering the league. Bird could do that in college. Ever heard of Bird's college teammates or the basketball program at Indiana State?
Larry Bird played for an Indiana State basketball program that had never been to the NCAA tournament. In 1979 Larry Bird's team is the #1 seed and lost in the finals to Magic's Michigan State team. Indiana State returned to the NCAA tournament in 2000. How many college players have accomplished anything comparable with that caliber of basketball program?
You are criticizing what people are saying without giving any credit to what they are saying. For what? They are not knocking Jordan. They are pointing to Bird's greatness.

The Larry Bird-led Celtics thoroughly *owned* Michael Jordan and his Bulls in the postseason. 6 wins 0 losses. It wasn't until Bird retired in 92 that the Bulls dynasty took shape. No one was happier to see Bird retire than Jordan..

  • @matthewuzulis5016

One thing about all the G.O.A.T. contenders is they all generally were team lifers, Magic with Lakers, Larry with Celtics, Jordan with Bulls pre retirement, Kobe with the Lakers, Duncan with the Spurs. Very few are not.
Another notable thing about Bird was the arena was sold out for his retirement, THERE WAS NO GAME THAT NIGHT! I honestly don't think you can call anyone the GOAT at this time, you are splitting hairs and if that is what is needed to do it's a moot point, a GOAT should be able to stand apart from the rest.
I love Pete's videos however as he does an amazing job keeping to facts and showing less tangible things.

One thing this video doesn't go into, and I don't think Larry would want him to, but Larry had been injured in his hand (a severely messed up finger) before signing with the Celtics and essentially broke his back in '86 building a driveway for his mom and spent rest of his career battling pain that ultimately ended his career and according to his teammate never took anything for the pain.

Great video. He really does "Make the Case" for Larry Bird. I grew up watching all those guys mentioned in the video. But, the final straw for me was Magic Johnson at the end telling Larry Bird that he was the greatest player ever! I'm convinced! Are you kidding me? 1 steal away from a quadruple double? WOW. His all around talent in every aspect of the game was phenomenal. Did you see some of those passes? Who does that nowadays? Just WOW. Thanks for sharing this video.

Another thing not mentioned in the video is his win/loss impact on the celtics in his first year. One of the biggest ever by a single player. Boston won 29 games the year before Larry came and then won 60 in Bird's rookie year with almost the same exact team as the year before (mchale and parish had not come over yet). Then NBA Championship in year 2.

Dude I saw Magic play Bird in college in person. (I was an MSU fan). Their rivalry ended up with great respect for each other.
This reminds me of seeing Kirk Gibson and Rick Leach square off in a baseball game. It was in East Lansing (Gibson from MSU and Leach from UM)
Leach hit THREE HR's (including the GW) BUT their combined HR's accounted for ALL OF THE RUNS in that game.
The Michigan State crowd literally gave Ricky a standing ovation ( even though they lost)

I'm white, grew up watching these guys. Loved Clyde Drexler, loved Bird, my cousin loved Jordan but I was always a underdog guy, he always went for who was the best. I say all this like that because that's how we seen it, Jordan was up there somewhere and everybody else was the underdog. Jordan is the GOAT, but with that said it wasn't like these other guys was miles behind, theres about 10 guys I can think of that are so close it would be measured in inches amongst miles. I hated when my cousin could rub his winners in my face, Jordan, Bo Jackson, Barry Bonds , but when you root for underdogs like I did I didn't have as much to brag about but when I won it was just sweeter

Respect for this guy. Before making a statement, investigate/research the question.
In beginning of video, he shows a clip of Pete Maravich. And asks, "who is this guy?"
In my opinion, if you don't recognize Maravich, or another great from a previous era, you lose credibility in any argument about a GOAT.
But, like I said, respect the fact this guy is doing his research before that judgement.

You should hear what Isaiah Thomas has to say about that moment. He was watching Bird run to the line and thought to himself he's going out of bounds and he was watching him balanced on the line swinging his arms suspended at the line. He said to himself; "Man how is he doing that." Then Bird grabs the ball. He did pull off some unbelievable acts.

You would not know who LeBron and kobe was if it wasn't for bird & magic and that's facts. Not to mention LeBron would've had to do a mental check to play in that league. In the 80's you didn't even have to watch basketball to know that it was likely to come down to the Celtics or the Lakers. For 10 years they WERE the NBA. Yeah, the Sixers, Rockets and Pistons made things interesting but it was really just two teams and two players - Magic and Bird. Like the video said, the Lakers had more talent.

Larry was one of the ultimates but I'd never ever say he was or is the G.O.A.T. Celtics fans scream that but nope, never.

Show me a ring that MJ and Kobe won without Phil Jackson, or a ring Bird won without Red Auerbach. I’ll wait

Lost all respect for him. My uncle was a HUGE fan. Went to a game. Kid in wheelchair wanted LB autograph. He told the kid he doesn't do free autographs; especially for ppl who can't even stand. We were in shock. Never liked him or Celtics since.

Trash talking king left that young kid with a memory that will last a life time. Autographs fade.

Biggest hit on Bird was he didn't last. Persistent injuries made what might have been the best career into a relatively brief one. Had he lasted another 5 or 6 years, maybe the Bulls don't have their amazing run and Michael seems a little lower.. No real way to know.
At the end of the day, I think all the GOAT arguments are stupid. The only thing that really needs to be said is that Lebron should not even be in the top 5 :) The ONLY thing Lebron's career has is longevity. He's almost never been at the top of ANY stat and the only teams he can win with are super teams. Time to start calling him what he is: B.B.O.A.T. (biggest bitch of all time).

Not the best. But should be in any top 5 of all time discussion.
