A lot of people put Bird in 6-10 all time, but that’s just stats. They don’t factor in the fact that he and Magic Johnson literally saved the NBA and made it popular again. Their rivalry made games televised again (ratings were worse than re-runs of some shows), made front page news instead of being relegated to the back sports section, and boosted attendance of games to the point where a lot of teams built new stadiums to accommodate more viewers. The majority of NBA arenas that are still being played in were built in the 90’s, a direct result of Bird and Magic popularizing basketball again.

I lived in Boston for a few years before Bird came. The NBA was a joke - the Celtics started selling lifetime passes for $1000 just so that they could get more than 1000 people to attend the games. Larry and Magic came into the league, and within 2 years, game tickets were the hottest item everywhere in the league. Larry didn't care about stats - if he had cared, he would most likely still top every chart - but he cared about the W's and team play - something that too many of today's superstars barely recognize.

@@alecvip7562 Bird nearly had a Quadruple double in just 3 qtrs. of the game. He needed just one more steal to achieve it. The Celtics were so far ahead that starters were on the bench when the coach brought it to Bird's attention. Did he want to go back in to get it? Nah, I've done enough damage. When later asked why, Bird said that's not why I play.

I think they’re 1 & 2 they can carry franchises to greatness. A player scorer need perfect squad to excel Kobe/MJ without Paul/Pippen a deferring 2 star & role players spot up shooters & selfless 6th men. But Bird & Magic are plug & play need a play maker 2 best ever, need rebounds walking triple doubles, & need scoring they got you too.
Magic is weaker shooter & defender why I got Bird 1. MJ obviously there but he’s early career proves needs perfect team. Bird took one of worst roster to ECF vs legend Dr J prime & beat him next year & defending champs Lakers so bad Magic felt like quitting. If Lakers don’t load up on allstars they don’t stop Bird & still needed McHale in 87 to be injured to beat them guy who guarded Magic on Baby Hook shot. All that is luck & circumstance 88 Isaiah hurt Lakers won, 89 Magic hurt.

Larry Bird could do it all. He is the best all-around player of all time.
Bird could shoot with either hand, he could go left or right and his passing was unbelievable.
When guarding him the opposing player had no idea what Bird was going to do.
How many players told the opposing team what they were going to do before they did it and then did it.
    They could not stop him.
Some players would make Bird mad. You didn't want to deal with an angry Bird.

@@eazymoneymane7789 I see you know nothing about Bird. You haven't looked at any statistics have you? Well I have looked at plenty.
Let's look at some defensive stats first and where the players you mentioned and Bird stand in some defensive categories among player all-time. I will post the last name, position on the list and the stat among the top 250 players
      Steals per game
      Jordan 3 2.35
      Olajuwon 36 1.75
      Bird 39 1.73
      Bryant 94 1.44
      Blocks per game
      Olajuwon 3 3.09
      Bird 211 0.84
      Jordan 217 0.83
Bryant - not in the top 250 all time
      Rebounds per game
      Olajuwon 27 11.11
      Bird 53 10.0
Jordan - not in top 250 all time
Bryant - not in top 250 all time.
Apparently Bird was a better all-round defender than Jordan or Bryant.
If you want to compare offensive stats for those same players here they are
      Points per game
      Jordan 1 30.12
      Bryant 12 24.99
      Bird 17 24.29
      Olajuwon 44 21.77
      Field goal percentage
      Oajuwon 93 51.21
      Jordan 158 49.69
      Bird 168 49.56
Bryant - not in the top 250 all time
      Assists per game
      Bird 46 6.35
      Jordan 101 5.25
      Bryant 145 4.68
Olajuwon - not in the top 250 all time
      Foul shooting percentage
      Bird 13 88.57
      Bryant 101 83.69
      Jordan 107 83.53
Olajuwon - not in top 250 of all time
Percentage of games won that they played in
      Bird 2 73.58%
      Jordan 42 65.86%
Bryant and Olajuwon - not in the top 50 all time.
And my last stat - affect on the team.
I will list the name team record the year before they joined and the team record for the 1st year they played.
      Bird 29-53 61-21
      Olajuwon 29-53 48-34
      Jordan 27-55 38-44
      Bryant 53-29 56-26
It is clear that Bird is the best all-around player and had the most affect on his team.

@@eazymoneymane7789 Again, you have not shown why. I showed statistics over their careers. The only statistic you show is about 1 NBA final. Prove to me that they were better all-around, not just say it. Do you know what all-around means? Bird was not the best in any 1 category. What he was is someone that could do everything very well.
He could rebound like a center, he could make shots like a shooting guard, he could direct the game like a point guard and he could play power forward or shooting forward.

You should also know just how injured Larry bird played. He crushed his knuckle after college before his rookie year. He couldn't feel the basketball anymore and was never as good a shooter as he was in college. He also hurt his back so badly his last several season's they had to put him in traction before and after games just so he could play. The man was as tough as they come.

At the 9:50 timestamp, when Doc is talking about that "night in New Orleans," was the game where Larry broke McHale's 57 point scoring record and the Hawks bench knew that Larry WAS going for it and the moment when Birdman was approaching 60 points (for that game), is when they were cheering Bird and the one guy fell off the bench. Sure they were fined by their coach for cheering him, but it was all sheer respect for Bird's marksmanship. 😀🤘

    Larry Bird Mixtape!!

  • @JPMadden
    @JPMadden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1) Nearly all of these Larry Bird tribute videos begin by insulting him with some comment like "he wasn't very athletic, so how could he play so well?" Yes, he was very athletic! I don't understand this nonsense.
    2) LeBron talked about how Bird played until he couldn't anymore. At the end of his career his back was so bad he couldn't sit on the bench during games. Instead, he would lie on the floor just out-of-bounds.
    3) Larry Bird would have been an all-time great on any team. But he was better on the '80s Celtics, whose point guard (Dennis Johnson), power forward (Kevin McHale), and center (Robert Parish) are also in the Hall of Fame. The only starter from the mid-'80s Celtics not in the Hall of Fame is the shooting guard Danny Ainge. All he did was score 15-17 PPG. In the 1985-86 season the Celtics had a 67-15 record. Their record at home was 40-1, an all-time best tied by San Antonio in 2016.
    4) I began watching the Celtics at age 15 during that amazing 1985-86 season. They could beat teams in every way: jump shooting, low-post play, fast break, passing, defense. I watched some of the recent NBA finals, the first NBA basketball I had watched in more than a decade, and I found the style of play infuriating. Everybody wants to take 3-pointers (it is impressive how many big men can now shoot them). If they go in, you win; if not, you lose. I saw plays where one guy is taking an 18-footer and his 4 teammates are outside the 3-point-line; no one was even trying for an offensive rebound. Too much one-on-one play and not enough pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop plays. Guys penetrating with the ball and then passing back out for a 3-pointer instead of driving to the basket and getting the other team in foul trouble. Minimal mid-range jumpers, low-post play, and fast breaks. I have zero basketball skills, and yet I found myself yelling at the screen telling the players what to do.

Larry was VERY athletic! He just wasn't graceful athletic like Magic and so many others.

Bird is the last player to win 3 consecutive MVP awards. He also finished 2nd four times if I remember correctly. There are interviews I have seen over the years that have Jordan talking about how he learned from Bird to improve his game. Bird is 2 on my list and there's not a lot of space between him and Jordan.

tell you how good Larry was. Before coming to the NBA Larry fractured many knuckles on his hands. one finger was, literally, facing the wrong way. Did it in a baseball game. He had surgery and the ball never felt right in his hands since that baseball game. He still accomplished what he did in the NBA!! Also...the Bulls (with Michael Jordan) never beat the Celtics in the playoffs while Larry Bird was playing. Thats how good he was!!

Bird didn't need to be the fastest. Many , if not most of the greats were super quick and could get to the ball, position super fast. Bird, knew 3 seconds in advance where the ball, play was going to be. He didn't need to be quick, he was already there.
