The lottery ticket is 99.9999996% guaranteed to not fix their problem, but the food will keep them alive longer. That's before you even considering how many lottery winners are broke not too long after their big win anyways.
Becoz gambling is a mental disorder.. It's not something you can just snap out of in a moment.. like cigarettes and alcohol addiction, gambling is a behavioural addiction.. It has very little to do with actually winning money. Most will gamble more if they win the money instead of solving their problems.
It’s not about “not learning” it’s just how poverty will psychologically manipulate people into thinking they have no chance at life anymore, and the one chance they have of getting out, is gambling, so they won’t choose the bread, because that bread to them won’t save them, however the ticket in their eyes, could.
As one Korean viewer said this is the recruiter's way of imitating the VIPs using only chump change. He comes from a very poor background, but despises the "trash" that would gamble their lives for a chance to win big like his father, for example. He savored the moment he could shoot his own father who likely ruined his childhood by gambling. The recruiter in fact aspires to be like the VIPs, but knows he never can become as rich and powerful as them. So he gets his thrills from exerting power over homeless people in the park and feels superior over them by lecturing them and trying to teach them a lesson. Stomping on the pastries is a way of releasing the frustration he had with his father. Afterwards, he rearranges his tie to appear dignified and above the homeless "trash". You can see that he is fully satisfied in himself, believing that he is not trash (even though deep down he knows he is).

@Tommy-i5y that's what good writing is. Not creating big unique monsters or in-depth world governments with realistic policies, good writing is taking normal ideas, and making them unrecognizable to the viewer. @@npquanh30402 there’s this image of a prisoner in a cell given the choice of choosing bread or a key. The prisoner is drawn choosing the bread. This scene explains perfectly why the prisoner chooses the bread. The key like the lotto ticket is an escape to a better life. For all he knows, the key could just be a dud the same as how there is a 99% chance that the lotto ticket is a dud.
@@richos07 It is a prison, and he is a prisoner. There is no way the prison will not give him something to eat. A simple piece of bread can only satisfy him momentarily, but the key can grant him lifelong freedom. This is simply a bargain. The outcome offers only benefits, and no risks.
The homeless people chose lottery over bread, therefore their bread got smashed/stepped as their consequences. Besides, he paid for the bread so he can do anything with it. He's simply playing along with his game On a side note, if you genuinely feel pissed off at a character, then you know the actor did their job well
Remember, he is proving a point. There are people that want money more than anything and will do anything to get their hands on it. He is teaching a lesson to them about making the wrong choice and the right choice.
That sad reality, people will choose something that not guardateed than guardateed one and that happen in squid game, you can stop and got the money but you choose to keep playing, theres no guardatee that you will survive, the bread is small symbolic for the player life and currect money reward
Even in his spare time, he plays supervillain games with desperate people just to mock them in the end. I despise him as a person, but love him as a character.
They didn't want the bread, and therefore they forfeited what was otherwise plainly available. This is in reference to the contestants in the Squid game, who all arrive with their personal sobstory regarding their reason for absolutely needing to participate. The point the man in the suit is trying to make is, that they didn't need to participate, that they could simply have chosen a sober way of life (the bread)
@@crewmatewillthrowthesehand7600I mean you could try to sell the bread to some idiot or ration it. However most homeless people would definitely choose the lottery ticket or a chance to drink or get high etc than to have something to eat.
@@crewmatewillthrowthesehand7600 you all misunderstand. The bread symbolizes an honest approach to life. While the lottery ticket symbolizes a deviant life.
@@masterzombie161 no no.. the bread and lottery ticket is a metaphor................ Taking the bread, symbolizes that you create for yourself a stable life and put in the effort and work that it requires. Taking the lottery ticket symbolizes, that you're not willing to put in the work to fix your life/situation, and that you're waiting for someone/something else to take responsibility, even as life offers you opportunities you ignore them and keep rotting away, putting the blame on everything except yourself.
By doing this, he is showing that human is weak. They'd rather take a risk in the hope of winning (even though the chances are unbelievable slim) than taking the most obvious choice you actually need. And by that, those who took the risk in playing are left with nothing in the end.
While he is a sadistic killer who plays wicked games with people for his own twisted amusement he is making a valid point. Do they take something they desperately need in the form of food or do they throw it away for an astronomically low chance at winning a fortune. It says a lot about human. How some are not just content with enjoying a simple good thing but throw it away for a tiny chance at more.
@@19Ledor he had the means to provide them with both the bread and the lottery ticket Instead he chose to prey on the vulnerable... not because he genuinely cares for them and wants to "teach them a lesson"... rather he wants to increase their suffering This is being evil for the sake of being evil which is WAY WORSE
@@19Ledor or does it show that one piece of bread isn't enough ... that they were hoping to win enough money to get them out of their terrible situation. Maybe pay off debts that have them unable to secure enough bread DAILY Is that such a terrible thing? How dare they hope for a future... eat your donated bread and let the rest enjoy peasant!
He shots a man in the head for loosing at rock paper scissors. That is way more evil than not giving someone free bread and a lottery ticket. However since he is a fictional character that is played by an amazing actor I am fascinated by his antics. No one got hurt after all. As for the gambling aspect. You should not gamble . But you should especially not rely on gambling winnings to improve your life. Let me illustrate why: Your chances of winning the lottery are about 300.000.000 to 1 (according to google) the biggest payout I have ever seen for the lottery was 20 million but usually its much lower, still lets go with 20 million. A lottery ticket costs 2$ so 20.000.000 - 300.000.000 x 2$ equals -580.000.000$ you would make if you wanted to be guaranteed to win the lottery. While one player may get lucky and make 20 million (they usually lack the financial skills to handle) everyone else is losing 580 million. If we turn the numbers a bit buying a lottery ticket is worth -1,97$ if you get one for free it’s worth 0,03$. The bread is worth much more. Giving your money to scammers and hoping for astronomically low odds won’t improve your life. Logical thinking, a positive but realistic outlook and hard/steady work will.
Same as them, everyone has the choices everyday,”To Do” or “Not To Do”. To eat healthy food or garbage food, work or fun,Life is just the results of choices so far
Something tells me that if he poured more lottery tickets on the ground than buns, he wouldn't have lost his composure at the end there. I get the feeling he's been driven insane by seeing how willing people are to throw their life away at the *chance* of making some quick cash, even when they've hit rock bottom and given a better choice.
He simply does this to justify and tell himself that these people are trash of the earth and possibly does this to get satisfaction out of seeing them in despair
Nah he knew what he was doing. Keep in mind he goes around slapping people, and the people ask for another one for a chance to win money against him. He’s been doing this for god knows how long and it’s very clear he enjoys it because he probably grew up with deadbeat parents to gambled their life away or was an addict himself. Either way this was just him continuing on his journey of reinforcing to these kinds of people that gambling has ruined their lives and it’s now ruined their chance to eat because it was in the end their choice.
Kind of how the system works: they let you get on your worst, give you options to humiliate you, and then blame you because of the decision you made. The house always wins, but only because we let them step on us
This is why I hate the lottery so much. It’s 1 in a million chance you’ll win, yet people still believe they will, all the while fueling the big cats. It’s a tax on hope
He wanted them to pick the bread but bc almost all of the people picked the lotto ticket he saw all as them as greedy Which is why he said “im not the one who wasted this food”
Except - to a person who is homeless and probably hasn't eaten anything or very little for quite awhile, one piece of bread won't fill his stomach - and he will continue to be hungry tomorrow and the next day and the next day - and likely have no hope. As little as the chance to win is, the lottery ticket at least offers hope.
the odds of winning the lottery is 1 in a million chances or maybe more, while the bread is 1in1 chances because its right in front of you. would you risk a 1 in a million chance or just take the bread and call it a day?
The thing about this scene is realistic because you can only choose one in life would you rather eat you spend money on a lottery ticket because once you spend it on the ticket you can’t buy food because you don’t have money just think outside the box for someone who is poor you can’t buy both thing

I love that they had the Recruiter(s) do this social experiment to see if the new “X or O” gimmick would work. Had more people chosen the bread over the lottery ticket, I don’t believe they would’ve added the new rule for the prize money.
I didn't even think of that, I just assumed he did this for fun. It just shows how amazing the writing is
@@oddguys178 i hesitate to call the writing of squid game amazing, they just execute cliches very very well
The recruiter is doing this because is his hobby
This doesn’t seem like something the Recruiter would do out of his own interest. After all, he is their lapdog
@Tommy-i5y that's what good writing is. Not creating big unique monsters or in-depth world governments with realistic policies, good writing is taking normal ideas, and making them unrecognizable to the viewer. Like a romantic subplot that influences the coda, or bringing back an idea but completely changing it from the last time we saw it
Needs an Oscar for this scene
And that is why the prisoner chooses the bread over the key to his cell
because bread taste better than key
What you said doesn't make sense. Is this unconventional info you scraped somewhere on the internet?
@@shai-zeecksYAAAAAY someone said the thing !!!
1:44 finally a wise man
Even though it's just acting, I am so genuinely fk-ing pissed off when he stepped and disrespected those breads.
Relax, These were fake foods.
Lol no @@kanashikinota799
The homeless people chose lottery over bread, therefore their bread got smashed/stepped as their consequences. Besides, he paid for the bread so he can do anything with it. He's simply playing along with his game
On a side note, if you genuinely feel pissed off at a character, then you know the actor did their job well
On a kinda good note, those bread were still in their plastic bags so they can still get whats left of the mushed bread
Remember, he is proving a point. There are people that want money more than anything and will do anything to get their hands on it. He is teaching a lesson to them about making the wrong choice and the right choice.
The fact he does this in his free time this guy like a lot of them is completely devoid of any humanity.
Well he killed his dad
For who doesn't know, he angru because most poor men choose lottery rather than the bread
2:15 "im not the one that threw these away!"
*Immediately dumps them on the ground and starts stepping on them*
My favourite scene in the whole season, what s crazy dude
I like how this scene foreshadows the new rules the they implemented for the games.
He's like Mr. Beast
tempting people at their weakest moments be like:
Actually true cos mr beast also did squid game with questionable ethics
Beast games was inspired by Squid Games so it's true 😅
More like Patrick Bateman
Mister breast but epic
i think this is his sick and twisted way of being kind, by making everything as a game
That sad reality, people will choose something that not guardateed than guardateed one and that happen in squid game, you can stop and got the money but you choose to keep playing, theres no guardatee that you will survive, the bread is small symbolic for the player life and currect money reward
Shows why he is one of the top paid actors
The recruiter being a straight up A-Hole in his free time is such a vibe 🥰
2:35 i love this face 😂
Fr 🤣
I guess that he did this as some kind of experiment, to see if the people chooses between their ambition and greed, or their need for survival.
it is also possible he just did this as a sick game, considering we know he's a sadist
Gong Yoo being a salesman before zombies attacked. Lol
This scene have deep meaning
Deepest most interesting character
1:12 I feel bad for him and he still has a great smile, I would give him bread as well if I was him
I got so happy when that one guy took the bread
I didn't know that he ended up survived in a Zombie Apocalypse and managed to become one of them
Survived? He turned into a zombie that's why he's psychotic.
What could 1 more bread do anyway but to prolong a sorry life?
@crewmatewillthrowthesehand7600 the bread is a symbol, of an honest life.
While the lottery ticket is a symbol of a deviant life.
I love how this scene lets us know more about who the recruiters character really is besides recruiting people
yes, he's a sadist that gets dopamine from ridiculing these homeless people
This guy insane 😂
He was saving everyone from eating evil bread
Bro has easily become my favorite character in this show
By doing this, he is showing that human is weak. They'd rather take a risk in the hope of winning (even though the chances are unbelievable slim) than taking the most obvious choice you actually need. And by that, those who took the risk in playing are left with nothing in the end.
To be fair the bread thing wouldnt even fill me up, itd be like having a snack lol
Actually the person who created the choice is the one who failed the moral test
🗿🗿
While he is a sadistic killer who plays wicked games with people for his own twisted amusement he is making a valid point.
Do they take something they desperately need in the form of food or do they throw it away for an astronomically low chance at winning a fortune.
It says a lot about human. How some are not just content with enjoying a simple good thing but throw it away for a tiny chance at more.
@@19Ledor he had the means to provide them with both the bread and the lottery ticket
Instead he chose to prey on the vulnerable... not because he genuinely cares for them and wants to "teach them a lesson"... rather he wants to increase their suffering
This is being evil for the sake of being evil which is WAY WORSE
@@19Ledor or does it show that one piece of bread isn't enough ... that they were hoping to win enough money to get them out of their terrible situation. Maybe pay off debts that have them unable to secure enough bread DAILY
Is that such a terrible thing?
How dare they hope for a future... eat your donated bread and let the rest enjoy peasant!
He shots a man in the head for loosing at rock paper scissors. That is way more evil than not giving someone free bread and a lottery ticket. However since he is a fictional character that is played by an amazing actor I am fascinated by his antics. No one got hurt after all.
As for the gambling aspect. You should not gamble . But you should especially not rely on gambling winnings to improve your life. Let me illustrate why:
Your chances of winning the lottery are about 300.000.000 to 1 (according to google) the biggest payout I have ever seen for the lottery was 20 million but usually its much lower, still lets go with 20 million.
RIP Bread 🍞❤
Those bread on the ground were still in the packaging, i would still eat it
If it were me, I chose the bread instantly.
What if the recruiter changed the stipulation. What if, instead of bread, he gave em a free steak dinner? I think that would play out differently.
Job offering instead of both of those 2 over lottery ticket
True. Community centres and other charities do regularly give out bread and other cheap options. Meat is not something they often give out.
I love him so much
This is literally him doing what he LIKES to do in his spare time. He's not on the clock right now, just doing it for laughs.
The only true choice is the lottery ticket. Food is very easy to find in a developed country
seong sang nim 😂😂😂💀💀
You eventually learn that he's projecting the hatred he had for his father
Kind of how the system works: they let you get on your worst, give you options to humiliate you, and then blame you because of the decision you made.
The house always wins, but only because we let them step on us
We should be stepping in and on the house, not the other way around.
This is why I hate the lottery so much. It’s 1 in a million chance you’ll win, yet people still believe they will, all the while fueling the big cats. It’s a tax on hope
If you want context, he’s doing this cause he’s a dog who has to do what he’s told. He does this to feel control and power.
If you want real context, he was bitten by a zombie and had to jump off a train to Busan to save his daughter.
If you want fake context, he did this for free time
@ there’s always deeper meanings in movies, it’s just if you see it or not. Do you belittle homeless people on your free time?
@@caseparker9389His character as a whole just screams "politely unhinged" to me so it being his free time act makes sense.
salesman: i gotta be perfect!- i gotta be perfect- ahh, that’s how i like it.
At least He’s also being nice.
HE IS SO HOT I literally forgot how good looking he is
In that, the recruiter show us the people are blinded by greed.
He wanted them to pick the bread but bc almost all of the people picked the lotto ticket he saw all as them as greedy
Which is why he said “im not the one who wasted this food”
This and Train to Busan really show the range of Gong Yoo.
The business man look is the same but the characters can't be further apart.
Just a reminder, he’s doing it during his free time 😭
They've should pick the bread instead of the card....
@@jamesrawlins735 Yes, that's why I follow your logic and go around hand out lottery tickets to homeless people instead of food.
the odds of winning the lottery is 1 in a million chances or maybe more, while the bread is 1in1 chances because its right in front of you. would you risk a 1 in a million chance or just take the bread and call it a day?
You're 1000 times more likely to get hit by lightning than win the lottery, lmao.
