Glenn Gould - Pt. 3: Piano Sonata B Flat Major, k. 333 (On How Mozart Became A Bad Composer)
- Part 3 of a light-hearted and humorous tribute from one musical genius to another. Glenn Gould had a somewhat mixed opinion of Mozart's music: while he was renowned for his interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, his views on Mozart were not as consistently enthusiastic. Gould expressed reservations about the emotional expressiveness and the perceived emotional restraint in Mozart's music.
This unique-documentary is significant in several respects. It is the most sustained and pointed of his various public statements about his ambivalent feelings toward Mozart’s music. It marks the first time he let loose the comic side of his public persona on television and concludes with passionate performance of the K. 333 sonata, that up until now has never been released and differs significantly from his three other preserved performances of the work.
Video and audio have been completely restored from the broadcast master.

No alternate character assumptions, jokes or witty remarks being bandied about here, just a masterful performance demonstrating that the truth/genius of Mozart is in his music.
Light touch, lightning fingering, tempo steady, volume control between left and right hands masterful. What's not to love ? And this piano player is pretty good as well!
The complete lack of phrasing.
@@arjenbij yeah, Gould always plays Gould, not the composer.
Somehow Im getting used to this lively and non plus ultra virtuoso version! Now I hear Schiff version and feel all the over melodramatic touch given to Mozart piano works. Also at the end these pieces were mainly designed for showmanship, and here Gould goes along with that intention with the ultimate literal and fast playing of it.
Estremecedora interpretación 😊...
Gracias por compartir.
And he sings Mozart too. So lovely❤
Inimitable GG, always worth a careful listen
my fav 333 prformance i looove GG
It's nearly impossible to beat that performance. I have no doubt even the best well known pianists are left shocked and moved by this performance even if they will keep it to themself.
GG, u are the #1 in my heart, always ❤
This is a Glenn Gould prank. In part 2 he talked down Mozart. This is objectively great.
Superior Glenn Gould!
Old but gould
I love how he crushes and exposes Mozart's cheesiness while still giving it his full dedication when playing it incredibly well that had me clap loud when he finished. What a great pianist he was. hahahaha, it's like he leaves nothing left for Mozart to defend his commercial style.
Ontario genuis on display #Glenn ...we do that 🧠
The speed masks technical and interpretive inadequacies. It is better to hear from a master musician who appreciates Mozart and understands that in Mozart each note counts.
It is good to have this on TH-cam where the speed can be adjusted to a more acceptable 75%, but this only reveals that it is a particularly well phrased performance
His Mozart is exquisite - and I don’t like Mozart - and his Mozart is the only Mozart I will listen to 😂
In fsct I much prefer the other, slower, superb interpretation of GG for this sonata
Ca c'est bon
It sounds actually beautiful when it is played in 0.75x.
Let's just say it sounds better at 0.75x and leave it at that. It does show that Gould's technique was pretty damn good though.
Wow you are genius
Glenn Gould sounds like shit, except for the Goldberg Variation and Toccatas, but it is easily done by another pianist named Sviatoslav Richter.
@@paulzeng6211 Imo, Gould way overrated as a Bach plsyer too. Lipatti way better. Arau, Perahia, and others play the Goldberg variations much better. Bach is supposed to sing too.
One can say that this tempo, chosen intentionally by Gould, is too fast. That may be true. But very few can choose this tempo, while retaining non-legato sequence of sounds and simultaneously sounding legit. It's interesting that he still "sings" at this tempo.
Lot of people played 333. Nobody played the way Gould does. Genius? Of course.
How many different dynamics or colors can one achieve on a harpsichord? Almost none. That was Mozart’s instrument.
A good harpsichordist plays with a wide range of dynamics, characters, articulations, nuances of timings, sonorities, etc.
Not good, but no musician has an equally strong understanding and connection with all composers and styles.

That's not true, th-cam.com/video/M8QYBnDDGg8/w-d-xo.html he says he loves this sonata
So how come I prefer this to every single Haydn sonata? To dismiss that opening melody as generic or 'commercial' is just facile
"Mr. Presidentttt" ...Yes ...you can call 📞 me Vince "Alright ...Vince" Yes ..."Mr. Presidenttt" It's Vince ..."Alright, Vince" Yesss "Vince ...you appear to be rather hawkish on matters ...is this a fair characterization?" No ...not really ...a hawk is hawkish ...I'm just Vince "Okay ...would you characterize yourself as being a bit dovish on matters?" No ...Doves 🕊are dovish ...what school did you go to? "A good one" Okay ...any other questions? "Yahhh, Mr. President ...I mean Vince ...would you consider charaterizing yourself as a penguin?" 🐧 Now your getting somewhere 😅
Glenn Is God
Troppo Gould e poco Mozart
No doubt he's great but the tempo is too fast
..
It become a mess
U may like it or not, however u may rest assured that you cannot play barely like him.
As Seymour Bernstein said, we're listening to Glenn Gould rather than Mozart. He's playing it as though it were Bach and he's on twice the legal limit of Adderall.
Who’s Seymour Bernstein? Never heard of him…
Good old Seymout
Yes its sounds rather like the fastest dance piece from a Baroque suite
We would discuss/criticize Seymour Bernstein if anyone cared or even knew who he was....
@@ravingircey I was discussing Gould, but okay.
Gould played everything the same way like everything is baroque counterpoint Bach with his neuroticism
His Majesty Jesus Christ has sent me on a mission with a message to tell the masses! Fear not, my brothers, your hunger shall be no more. He who dispenses the bread of life shall be your sustenance !
Too fast.
As a Mozart lover, I'll say Glenn Gould died too late.
As a Bach lover I’d say way too early
Mozart died too early. Story has it that Gould murdered him.
Gould should never have touched a Mozart piece
Mozart died too early. Rumor is that Gould murdered him.
Wow sounds like trash. I don’t know who’s worse, Mozart or Gould. Zero talent between the two of them combined
Glenn Gould DESTROYS Mozart using no DYNAMICS or COLOR
Zero phrasing
"destroys" is not a is not a suitable adjective for such a beautiful interpretation by a this great genius ❤ I just love Glenn Gould's playing ❤
Gonna cry about it?
@@belialah Gonna say anything useful?
@@79Tomasso why should I? The kind o of people that make those comments seems week to me. So I think u should enjoy. If u dont' like it it's ok but dont' be weak and cry. Or maybe upload a TH-cam video showing us the mastery of piano playing.
Horrible and unmusical.
Mozart always was a bad composer. Child prodigy, yes, and.. that's about it. Mozarts fame always seemed artificial to me, unearned. Like Kardashians or Justin Bieber, famous names for no reason at all.

@@kangoos2000 exactly
Jajaja, that was very good. Who are you to say that heavy affirmation? Please
@@TitoVicVGC I am someone who listens to classical music a lot. I've listened to Mozart's complete works and I can tell you that around 95% of it is shamefully bad. I can't say the same for any other composer except Mozart.
