The Cantigas de Santa Maria and Oral Tradition

The influences the Cantigas de Santa María draws on are still subject to debate. While that of troubadour lyric poetry is unquestionable, more disputed is the influence of Hispano-Muslim poetry. But there is a third influence that has received little attention: that of the oral tradition. The concert given by Cantaderas focuses on the latter, combining a selection of Cantigas with a series of popular songs, many related to the festivity of the marzas(marking the month of March and the beginning of spring).
