  • The Vintage Aviator's Sopwith Triplane puts on a terrific display at the Wings Over Waiarapa 2011 airshow (Masterton, New Zealand)
The Sopwith Triplane was a British single seat fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by the Sopwith Aviation Company during WW1. Pilots nicknamed it the Tripehound or simply the Tripe. The Triplane became operational with the Royal Naval Air Service in early 1917 and was immediately successful. The Triplane was nevertheless built in comparatively small numbers (less than 200) and was withdrawn from active service as Sopwith Camels arrived in the latter half of 1917.

Great to see my favourite WW1 fighter being flown in fairly spirited style.

Thank you thank you thank you firstly for posting these vids of these wonderful old aeroplanes, and secondly for resisting the urge to be 'artistic' with the editing. Just letting the beautiful old warplanes do their thing so we can get a good solid look at them in their element.

A really cool looking, yet very underrated fighter.

Everybody (almost) knows the Fokker Triplane.
Very few people realise it was inspired by Sopwith's Tripehound.
Many reckon the Sopwith version better, yet only something like 150 were built.

what a great video, pity about the fog. If Sir Percy Ware-amitage had chosen this over the Avroe he might not have landed on the train. ha' ha, Where is this aircraft based and is it still flying?😃

It's one of the WW1 aircraft of The Vintage Aviator Collection, and is based at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton, New Zealand. It still flies regularly during the flying season.

@@HistAvFilmUnit That's great. I'm about to start building a1/17th (?) scale model for our R.S.L. war memorial walk.
They have a 1/17th Albatross D111 (IV?) hanging in a descending turn. So I thought NO! Get a Sopwith Triplane after it. The club agreed. especially when I pointed out how successful some Australian pilots were with them particularly against Albatross.__ Nigel Minifiel 17 kills Robert Little D.S.O & Bar 28 kills.

Pfalz produced a triplane too but not in numbers and Fokker's design was preferred by German pilots. Barry Diggins's book, September Evening, discusses the introduction of both types in 1917.
