i believe there is no specific way of fighting that’s why it’s an art, not every artist draw the same but they all have they own techniques for similar results. Love this video learned a lot!!
Yes and no. It's a case that not one size fits all. I watched the legendary Ike Quartey knock out a fighter ringside from a jab, and trained with fighters who could put people down with one. In pro boxing, when you're getting messed up with powerful jabs (where the fighter gets in some hip rotation) that breaks you down over 10 / 12 rounds. The slap jab worked for Holmes, but for some other dudes you'll just be able to walk through their jabs if there's nothing on it. Swings and roundabouts. Anyway, great content and delivery style you got a sub 👍
@@Hadrada. Maybe the greatest Brit of all time Wilde was. Great jab and counter puncher! Wise words - but I think the jab is also like your stance, it's good to give your opponent different looks. Different levels. Anyway, thanks for reminding me of 'The Mighty Atom' - has there been a better knick name?
Regardless of the mechanics of the jab, the goal for every punch should be to explode/lock upon contact, as in keeping the arm and entire body loose until you reach the target. But yeah, there are many ways and angles to throw the jab, depending on what you are intending to do when entering the opponents line.
WOOOOOW!!!! First time coming across this video!!! Just after my sparring earlier (i’m 52, the pro was 30), i saw a kid pushing his jab!!!! i told the kid the SAME thing this man mentions!!!! The jab is a slap, like a whip!!!! Better yet, like when we were kids popping our bathroom towels at each other!!!! THEN i told him as he gets better, he’d incorporate a pole like jab!!!! A stick/pole, imagine it going straight with power!!!! Sometimes a whip, then power!!!!
I think using it as a whip is really going to make it easier to throw. But if i CAN land a stiff accurate jab im throwing it and I CAN drop people with that jab. But im going to throw it like a slap or whip next sparring day
nice video and good presentation. I already know most of your content but the i still watching because the way you explain very easy to understand for newbie. This video is really in depth in knowledge of boxing , many modern trainer or PT when they saw me use this jab they consider as wrong technique or your hand is too low etc. For me this technique is useful in middle of the fight when we can make a litter bit confuse to our opponent, mixing different type of jab
Depends on who you're fighting. Against punchers, if your jabs aren't strong enough to make them respect it, they'll walk through it to hit you with bigger shots.
For an alternate view on the jab and its effects watch Sonny Liston in action. If I had to choose between the Liston jab or the Holmes jab I would choose Liston’s but either way they were the best heavyweight jabbers in my opinion.
Use the jab to blind the opponent and knock their head back setting up for the cross. If you watch prime mike tyson he didn’t throw his jab like a fencer he threw it with his body square with his opponent, the disadvantage being how close your body is to what is probably their backhand, the advantage being that you can rotate and properly transfer weight and engage your reaching muscles; making the jab a punch which can actually do damage and still set up other punches. I think if you were throwing thousands of jabs that would be the way to do it if long term health is a priority.
First time seeing your channel. Greatly impressed w your presentation & clear,,,simple instruction of the fine art. Thank you Sir,,,look forward to more great content. 🥊
I find the jab different personally. I agree with the whipping motion, but I think every weapon you have as an arsenal should all have a lethal side to them. With the jab I find most people underestimate it. With me being southpaw and right handed that jab is my favourite weapon, I can slam those in, daze my opponent and follow up with other strong blows.
Love the video man. I appreciate how much you care about helping people, especially young men in need of guidance. You seem like a down-to-earth, level-headed guy with good morals. Big respect
Well made video, except that part where you say that you don't need to change shoulder positions with your jab. That's how you can incorporate the shoulder feint(s). You have to change positions/head slots on every punch and defensive movement. Keeping your head off the line for defensive and offensive purposes simtanously. Still good video.
I went from boxing to kickboxing. I just got the basics down on boxing. I can move my feet trowing a combo maybe catch some shots and pull counter but never went all the way into the science but still my jab is way better then most of my kickboks mates. I can hang with kickboxers who have fought . But my jab and frame keeps them at bay if can touch good with jab i trow the 1-2 behind. But sometimes i their are other boxers and their jab is just as good as me and if he is as big as me i usually win the jan battle with trowing jabs that we both land but mine will get stiffer every time i land and usually they give the battle up but if someone is like me i can not establish the jab. Any advices?
I will try it. When I spar my friend throws jabs that make my body contort because of how hard he jabs 😂 so this will be interesting to see what happens, I think I will end up eating mud.
I wonder if you would use this sort of punch without gloves in a real fight, would you be more likely to hurt your hand? I tend to watch these sorts of vids for self defence reasons, rather than actual competition, hence my question. I just wonder if it works in boxing because of the glove, and whether you are more likely to bounce a bare fist off someones skull at an odd angle
I also saw another interview where he told the interviewer that he lands with the backhand and essentially it was a backfist, which a backfist is illegal in boxing so he was low key cheating, but hey its a good move I guess
Not true the problem is women are fatter now... Long as you can touch a woman's cervix you are fine. But if one of you is fat are you both get fat. That makes it more difficult to do any man who has 67 in should be fine

Yep!
Even in old age, Holmes still had a beautiful jab. The Easton Assassin 🥊🥊!
This video has completely changed the way I see this simple punch 🥊
Bro, you've just redefined the industry. Fights will be so much different if everyone gets this
I can’t think of a single great champion in any division who didn’t have good jab! Most important punch in boxing!
Awesome, thank you ❤

Jimmy Wilde talked of the demise of the jab
He said the jab should be as hard as you can throw it

If you're not training for matches, stiff jabs to the face bare knuckle are a must
Theres Arm punch jab, Corkscrew jab, Up jab, Drop Step Jab, probing Jab, Stiff jab ...and thats about it Forrest

For a whip jab i dont clinch my fist till the last second it hits there face its faster that way

I love the jab! My sparing sessions at the gym are mainly my jab alot of jabbing to the chest and body. Love your basic training approach brother
Good teaching 😊👍🏿👌🏿🇬🇧

That's why you would use your footwork and head movement to get out of the way of shots
@@deandrejohnson6119 ahh of course! Footwork and head movement! Easy! Wow you're so clever. Can't believe those boxer never figured that out.

Thank you man, this is a valuable video and this is so often missed detail by a lot of coaches. Great job with passing the knowledge :)

Great explanation.
Jack Dempsey wrote that you should not just flick your jab out you should throw it out hard, he called it the Left Jolt

I like the Mike Tyson shoulder snap Jab :) full rotation which fully loads the right. Ask Homes he likes that too
Cool vid!
Larry Holmes was 254lbs. That alone gave him a lot of power behind it.

Thx coach 😎

Great instructions. Thank you for your efforts...
Thank you for your analysis.
If you use your jab as a range finder, a good opponent can use it against you too! He can find his distance with your jab and counter you

Thanks, will do!
Great tutorial. Well done
The whip is good for when exhausted, but the standard stiff job can knock someone out.
Can u make a video of how to establish the jab if you both have similiar reach and similiair jab technique
Great video.
Concise and useful.
Such a non telegraphic way of letting the jab fly and stab with precision. Well explained.

How can i become of your group?
This is great
I really appreciate that you mentioned not rotating, i think in fitness boxing its become the norm to teach that way but its totally wrong
If you rotate when throwing a jab you're rotating your body to the position it should already be in, ie you're too square on.
