I don't get it with inheritance laws in the us where the legal wife doesn't get anything ( unless expressly mentioned in will ) instead the kids get it directly , that isn't anywhere near fair on the spouse and even less so if there hasn't been any cheating ETC by the wife . to leave a good spouse high and dry after looking after her husband is just wrong, the kids wouldn't miss out in any case as they would inherit from the parent when the pass on . Down under our system is much fairer
The money belonged to the grandmother not the husband and since the husband and grandmother died at the same time, the next living relative to the grandmother is the grandson.

However, if dad died first, then the estate goes directly to grandson. But that is just my state. Which is why estate lawyers/planners are recomended in cases of any large amounts.
