    I found EXO 5 months ago after watching the K-drama, 100 Days My Prince, starring EXO main singer, D.O. I didn’t know anything about K-pop, but because I wanted to know more about this actor, K-pop, in the form of EXO, has become the soundtrack of my life. They perform well-crafted songs with hooks that are accessible to almost everyone. Having found EXO, I will never let them go.

    • @pamelafaerye7941
      @pamelafaerye7941 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      Wow! That's my beginning exactly! But 10 months ago: "100 Days My Prince. Who is this D.O. Guy? OMG he sings like that? He dances like that? Wait. EXO is amazing and skilled at what they do! I didn't know k-pop could sound like this!" That was my experience. Now I do have a bias, but they all wrecked me. I've seen almost all of their content, I got my first light stick and a card-carrying EXO-L. I've never done anything like this before. And I don't really have anyone around me who gets it. So it's nice to meet you! 😅

    You just found treasure. EXO is one of the best in everything and not only vocals on which they are unmatchable. Their discography is super versatile and you will enjoy listening to many of their songs. Many of their b-sides are better than their title songs which says a lot since their title songs are amazing. Add to that also the non-skip solo albums of some of the members who have taken the industry by storm and you’ve got your hands full of gems. Enjoy it.

    • @by9thplanet
      @by9thplanet  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      ty for your comment! i love to hear that. i often find the b-sides are more to my taste than the singles. that's where the artists get to be experimental and do what they wanna do and not just what the label wants them to do. I wonder if thats the case with EXO?

      @@by9thplanet It's hard to say what they experiment with because over 12 years their title tracks are all over the place, too. I think they experiment more in their subgroups (EXO-CBX and EXO-SC). And definitely deeper in their solo careers. B-sides you might enjoy are Groove, Jekyll, Sweet Lies, White Noise, What if.... I love all genres of music from everywhere, as long as it's quality. People tried to get me to listen to kpop for a couple of decades too. I just could not get into kpop at all until I found EXO last year - through no marketing whatsoever. Their singing is top tier. Their harmonies crush me. They do various genres, but heavier in RnB. The EXO main vocal line of Baekyhun, Chen and D.O. are three of the best kpop vocalists on any serious list, but they can ALL sing. You'll see it in any Behind the Scenes of them in the recording studio (there's one for this song). Any live concert (try Mama, Monster, Wolf or Intro, The Eve, Forever). And their Dingo's Killing Voice appearance (live with some production tweaking). Other studio songs you might like are Monster, Tempo, Let Me In, Obsession, the 2012 pre-debut "What is Love" by EXO-K (they were 2 groups once) and Cream Soda (the one that reeled me in). I listen to a couple of other kpop groups now. But EXO is chef's kiss. OK, all done.😅 Thank you for reading this far and for your reaction. 🙂

      @@by9thplanet You're absolutely right. The world categorizes too much. And it does keep us from experiencing music we might enjoy. One thing I realize while listening to music in other languages -- particularly when done well -- is that music is really a universal language. I love when I can feel what the song is about without the translation. The bridge in Let Me In, as a recent example, almost brought me to tears once. Music really is music. ... But still (I'm overthinking it), maybe sometimes it's ok to define the culture of a song, so that culture and musical history has a chance to be appreciated by smart people.

    Most K-pop music has a weird groove that gets getting used to. I can't figure out if it's due to the language, diction or simply the flow on how they speak. Not knowing anything about Korean or Japanese, does the flow work to native speakers the same way English songs flow or is it just completely different especially when these groups mix different languages? Sometimes you hear rhyming schemes between English and native tongues, curious if some of this get lost in translation just for the sake of rhyming or is it clever how the concepts are understood because of the phonetics the way these languages fits each other.

    • @by9thplanet
      @by9thplanet  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Rio mine g.
      i actually love where kpop is at rn. I think when i couldn't digest it was in the 90s (before it was called kpop, right?) and the 00s. but rn im pretty into it! hehe
      you are having some FANTASTIC thoughts on that. I think languages like nigerian dialects work really well with english (as english has had a presence in their language for a lil while and their pigin dialect). but languages that developed separately like french and english or korean and english didn't work well for my ears before. BUT Japanese and english worked much better. and I think japanese uses parts of the mouth that are somehwat similar to english. But in this song, the korean and english is sooo good together.
      I think the rhymning schemes and even references between two different languages are very clever a lot of the time and it goes over the heads of ppl like me who mainly just speak one language. and the way it is clever can differ depending on which language is their native. like songs that mix korean and english are clever from a korean vantage point if the artist is originally from korea vs. clever in a different way if the artist is originally from america (dumbfoundead). the mind works in slightly different ways depending on where you're from perhaps?
      bro, we could grab a drink and talk about this, haha.

      @@by9thplanet It came to mind when checking out Korean and Japanese reactors checking the same mvs American reactors where checking. Reactions are completely opposite from each other as if they're looking at different work. It's fascinating how different cultures seem similar yet from a skewed perspective. You seem to break down things based on experience as with most American reactors while most Asian reactors are based on instinct regardless of their experience. There's a Japanese dj for example who reacts to a lot of K/J-pop MVs and a lot of times I question if he's even paying attention and just stream for the hell of it. Then what usually would stimulate generally most American reactors, this guy would like dismiss it as if he either wasn't listening or has no connection to what he just look at.
