Hi Shawn Littlebear. I just wanted to thank you for the time and effort that you put into making these videos. I've seen handmade drums at markets before and have always been curious about the process behind them, so it inspiring to see the time and attention put into breathing these to life. I hope that 9 years later you are doing well and are still making and and playing the drums.
Thank You Shawn!!! For taking the time to share your knowledge and expertise. I appreciate that you are sharing your wonderful Native American Culture with the world. So many arts and crafts have died with the person possessing the skill. So much wisdom has been lost just being verbally passed down, in an attempt to preserving it's purity. Thank You for letting us in..... promoting unity and respect. I will make a drum using your technique this month!
So love this and have always enjoyed the drums even though I don’t play- the art, the sound, the meaning… and I find it really cool that you spell your name exactly like me! Shawn. Anyway- Ty and I’m going to give this art and skill a try. ❤️
Wow this is so beautiful. Thank You for sharing your time & gifts with us. My Dad did all kinds of woodwork & I wish he could have seen this. He would have been fascinated as I am. ❤✌️
Thank you! I was lucky enough that Jerry McDonald Thundercloud was in my country and he taught me how to make the traditional drum. Very happy with her (my drum).
I just used your tutorial to birth my first drum. It was surprisingly easy other than getting things to line up correctly ,but that was my fault for cutting the lace in half rather than a 1/4 - 3/4 ratio. My biggest question is where did you all go? I've noticed this channel just dropped off a few years ago. I loved your content. Many blessings wherever your path has taken you my friend.
I see other videos on TH-cam where Non-Natives trying to teach and sell so-call drum kits and here you a actually Native teaching how to make drum and telling a story about culture passing on the knowledge for free..
I’ve been watching your videos for a while and wanted to ask: In your experience, what is the type of drum that has the most moving a profound sound? I understand that this may not be universal, since everyone has a different preference for sound, but want to know what you think. I have listened to different drum types, including those made from horse, cow and buffalo. Thank you.
I acquired a sheet of raw hide and would like to make a drum. Do I need to soak the entire hide in order to cut it to shape for the drum head? Thank you
Hy, thanks a lot for the teachings, i need to get a bufalo skin for a drum, maybe you can get me in contact with Shawn littlebear or know where a can get it from, thanks a lot again!!
Hiy Shawn. I enjoyed watching your videos and make drums myself. I have a question... on the introduction to your video you are beating a drum and the drum sound does not continually ring, it makes the sound then dies away suddenly. I really like that and was wondering how to calculate that into my drum making. Some people say that there needs to be a sharp edge that the skin rests on but I am thinking perhaps a thick level edge to the frame might help to stop the sound from continuing? Any thoughts thanks :-)
Wouldn't it be easier to fold that round skin together and punch the hole through then to get better and quicker work for symmetry? Well, I'm thinking so if not doing the double hole sets going around the circle, but single holes around.
super nice drum making information! I am in the opertunity to make a very big drum. The size will be 50 cm in diamenter, from center to end of frame. The frame will be from light, strong wood due to the size. I have found a prefect rawhide with the correct size for it.However, i do need to know the size of the lace that i need to cut for joining the drum all to gether. So the drum will have in total a 1 meter from point to point. Can anyone enlighten me with this quest? I have seen it in a jounering, and they requested it for me to be build (dont ask why... i just try to follow up on the request)..thank you for your information!
Thank you for your answer. so in this case, if i am correct, you need to have +/- 25 cm extra over the total diamenter of the drum :D i can do something with this information. tanhk you again for the information!!! ps i suspect that with 1.25 cm you actualy means 1.25 meter right?
Francisco fcs : actually u need to make sure the lace is 3 times as large as the circumference to ensure u can effectively wrap the big drum. It also needs to be 1/2 inch WIDE lace for big drum
Your voice makes for good teaching.the background music is so distracting, it actually disrupts my memorie. Sorry but i always speak my toungs thoughts. So what i am asking is that you might stop the music, if not can you lower it so its not louder than yourself .
How come shawn little bear says on other channels he is a record keeper and has ancient Hebrew text guarded by spirits in a cave. How come he says native Americans are Hebrew?
