My first use was a $35 hola brand from Amazon. It sounds just fine and I've even performed with it before. Good quality for beginners as long as you take care of it.
If it gives you any idea, my starter Uke cost me $50 then another $15 to restring it into a left handed uke.. Used it for months while I learned the beginner skills practicing a few hours a day. Then invested in a $250 one. I won't lie, you will hate the cheap ukulele, it will feel as though the sound is never quite right and doesn't ring out as easily from a light strum, but the shift from my training uku to my long term playing ukulele was amazing, I could play pieces that where previously giving me struggle with much more ease. I know i'm not selling it well, but if you just get a diamond head uku to start with and train yourself on all the skills, when you switch to a main ukulele your finger strength and flexibility will be pretty well developed.
For $150 you should be able to get a GREAT starter uke! Head down to a music shop and have a go on a few, they should be able to advise you on a good one for your needs.
