I think the whole song is actually a reimagining of Aerith's theme. It purposely tries not to song like that during the intro of the song, but I hear it in the intro now too.
Uematsu is a truely a master composer. His ability at rewriting and hiding motifs across multiple songs is simply the best I've ever heard. It gave games like FFVII so much depth and emotional impact.

I have always loved that this song evokes a feeling of despair and doom yet then starts evoking a feeling of determination and hope when it progresses. Imo it might be my favorite final dungeon theme out of any Final Fantasy game

This always has been one of the best final dungeon tracks in the series. You can feel the culmination of everything Cloud and company had experienced throughout their journey. They know this is the last hurrah and their one last shot at stopping Sephiroth as they journey further and further down into the northern cave.
