REALLY subtle detail that I didn't notice until just now is Hank's little nod of approval when Abed goes into detail concerning the bridge's construction/integrity. Notice that he stops criticizing how Abed runs the game after that; I think it's because he realizes at that point that Abed is genuinely good at being a Dungeon Master.
This episode has grown on me over the years. It's not the equal of the first d&d episode, but no shame on falling short of one of the best episodes of the show.
It was always going to be difficult to follow the first D&D episode and the emotional pay off this time doesn't quite hit the same way it did for Neil. But I think this is one of the best Dean and Jeff episodes.
Wow I actually thought the original was pretty overrated. A good episode for sure, but it’s very clear that the popularity came from the controversy of it being pulled off streaming services (for BS reasons). I like that David Cross actually had an effect on the characters and episode. Neil’s plot was contrived and ultimately not what the episode was even about; it was all servicing Pierce’s character development - which of course gets back-tracked every single episode because Dan despised him - making it a less impactful episode.
"I've generated some details about the surrounding area" Translation: "Don't test me, boy. I've built worlds you could hardly fathom in trips to the bathroom"
Is this in any Trivia, cos I have a feeling this isn't. In any case, I just realized this: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis play the same character in Looper. Bruce Willis is, as we know, John from Die Hard. Two plus two equals Joseph Gordon-Die Hard.
This episode was great but I wanted an ending to their quest, I know it was about fixing dad-son feud but still the first D&D episode with Pierce was EPIC!
To think that the tension between Hickey and his son resulted in a much better episode than that season 4 episode where Jeff finally meets his father that he resented so much
I remember watching this the first time and thinking the follow up to "he's not your grandson" would be a bigger reveal than just, "I don't like my dad" drama 🙈
0:09 here in the italian version he mispronounces "dungeons". No idea why they changed it in translation, but it was funnier the fact that he has no idea of how the game is even called.
"I am Tristram Steelheart. I am a holy cleric with a mace and a dumb name." One of Community's favorite directors (although not this episode) was Tristram Shapeero. This has to be the writers teasing him about his first name, LOL.
This is really common, instead of actually trying to bond with his son and play the game on his terms, hickey and the rest just want to fast forward the relationship so he can fix the specific issue at hand. Instead of fixing the underlying issue they just want to be immune from the consequences of their actions and get a free pass.
As a DM I'm always miffed at Abed rolling all the dice. I'm guessing they did it to speed up the narrative, but it makes Abed come off as a control freak. Maybe that's all intentional but that's how I feel.
My headcanon is that no one else in the group ever bothers to bring their own dice, so Abed just uses his and they're all casual enough that they don't mind. I like to think they've played maybe twice since the first D&D episode.
I believe it's actually just how Dan Harmon learned the game was played when he was younger. It's mentioned in the Thomas Middleditch episode of Harmon Quest, when Thomas asks to roll his own dice, and Dan says he thought the DM always rolls the dice. Spencer confirms it's not actually like that.
Bring back episode 14 from season 2 "Advanced Dungeons and Dragons". I bought the box set just to be able to rewatch that important episode about mental health.
Ugh. Players like David Cross's character are the worst. Always wanting to split from the party and do their own thing, steal from or attack other party members, or in general fuck with the party and with the campaign. Why even bother playing D&D with a group if you can't figure out some way for your character, in general, to stick with the group?
You're absolutely right but I think that it's implied that David Cross's character is purposefully trying to ruin the game out of spite towards being forced to reconcile with his father. Cross has always been good at playing insufferable or annoying characters and I think he does a spectacular job in the role as a problem DnD player. I'm sure this episode gave many long time DnD players some horrible flashbacks.
@@JoeyJojoJrJr Well that's my point. This episode was a great showcase of that kinda personality. Obviously in order to do that you're gonna have to show all the toxic behavior.
Also, the look Abed gives while saying "I've generated some details about the surrounding area" is fantastic
And people say he doesn't emote! :b
