    Why is octalink bad? So no 7710 on a fixed gear?

  • @marcuswong1797

    Not sure if this is true of fixed gear frames, but on road bikes GXP does have some what adjustability to get a chain line straight. We can put small thin spacers on either side to even out the chain line on the road bike frames. Not really sure if that is able to be done on fixed gear bikes.

    Square taper bb's are prac af. Different spindle lengths for any crank chainline. It gives me the turniptops when new tech creates less options. Still, mustn't blub.

    hej Zach, i would love to hear about Fixed gear specific geometry. planning on building a fixed gear frame by myself as a first project and i am a bit unsure about this topic. last year i took a framebuilders class and build a frame in the course. i was so stoked about that experience, that i built a workshop to do just that at home. so i am looking for a more simplistic bike to build - what else than a fixie (am i allowed to use the term fixie here? as to me its obvious sarcastic)

    • @SteezeShop
      @SteezeShop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don Walker has a really good article on track specific bike geometry as a starting point for something super racey. Also look at geometry’s on different fixed specific bikes to see what might be a desirable starting place. I would love to build my own frame one day. Hoping you accomplish the goal!

    It is NOT possible to adjust chainline with spacers at the bb, on Hollowtech 2 threaded bb's, unless you use MTB cranks which may have longer axles. No one uses MTB cranks on road or track bikes because of the wide q factor, which completely different story.
    The outboard bearing cups hare a fixed width and only one size for 68mm bb's, also there's only one crank axle length offered. I know very well what I'm talking about as I'm running a custom bb setup on my road bike and Hollowtech 2 cranks, for which I've had to modify the bb shell.
    You can only use chainring bolts spacers to adjust chainline.

    About JIS or IS0 , please, how can I tell them apart?

    • @ZachGallardo
      @ZachGallardo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need to measure them with calipers. The widths across the flat section at the end of the spindle for each will be:
      JIS: 12.65mm
      ISO: 12.33mm

  • @crack_squirrels
    @crack_squirrels 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Generally speaking, if you switch a JIS crankset for another JIS crankset, will your chainline be unaffected? Or do different cranksets sit differently on the taper itself? Thinking of replacing my Lasco CF12 for a FK55 CNC, but not sure whether this will affect my chainline and it's an £80 experiment. If it did affect chainline, what would be there remedy? A different width BB?

    why are shimano octo link BB's bad?

    • @SaitekFreak999
      @SaitekFreak999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was wondering that too. From what I can tell, the construction is way better than square taper ones. The wider bearing spacing and thick hollow axle make them stiffer and the cranks dont suffer from repeated shoving onto a taper...
      Care to explain, Zach?

    • @TheSpaceBrosShow
      @TheSpaceBrosShow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SaitekFreak999 Supposedly Octalink and ISIS use smaller bearings as the hollow axle takes up more space than a square taper, though octalink doesn't seem to suffer from poor reliability.
      Also, the track specific octalink bb -might- use unsealed cup and cone bearings, I don't remember, so that's not exactly great for maintenance free riding

    • @bknapp9728

      I just bought an Izumi Silver chain today. Apparently they pretty good as they come from Japan and the Super V version is NJS approved. Other than that, I have no experience with the chain.

    • @psychoaiko666
      @psychoaiko666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a V super toughness, and from what I can tell it is longer lasting/harder wearing, after a couple of months still no noticeable drop.
      And imo unlike what Bebo says it isn't any louder or less smooth than a 410 or 610.
      Dunno man, usually if your chain is a bit noisy, it's either due to lubrication, or the chainline being out of wack, doesn't have to be much, just a couple of minutes off can already be noticeable 🤷

    • @psychoaiko666
      @psychoaiko666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bebo well, have you ever had one? Because I have one, and I can tell you from experience that (in combination with high-end drive components) I can't feel any friction, as opposed to other chains.
      Also, 3/32 is niche af, and still not the standard on track.

    • @ZachGallardo
      @ZachGallardo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've ridden a few Izumi chains (Jet Black, Eco, Super Toughness), and I can't tell any difference between them other than looks and a fancy NJS stamp on the Super Toughness. The Super Toughness comes with the flat head screw/square nut for quick removal, but you can just buy that piece separately. Get a Super Toughness if you like fixie points, get a Jet Black/Eco/etc. if you like money.

  • @psychoaiko666

    I've said it before and I'll say it again, Sugino 75 sealed bb is the shit!
    ...
    In combination with Sugino 75 cranks, Izumi V super toughness chain and Kappetein sprocket.
    Okay, it's a ridiculously expensive drivetrain, but holy hell is it a joy to ride!
    Edit: what im saying is, save up for a couple of months and get that buttery smooth goodness too.
