I had to go back and rewatch this episode after the clips started being posted. It's outstanding, still relevant, and would never, ever be made nowadays.
I think it would be difficult to have the main white character use that word in the context of a weekly cop show today no matter what context and no matter what the authorial purpose/intention is. But thats what made this show so great, that wasnt now, and now isnt then. It was really really groundbreaking to do that while keeping the coherence of the shows narrative. To have Bobby call Andy out in the office was a brave bit of writing and as usual no punches pulled from our favourite actors. This show was a step in rhe right direction. It pushed things forward, not sideways.
@@infidel42 now that's what I do not understand from this new so-called generation of political correctness. Let white people use the n word when it comes to entertainment and movies because that's the artistic stuff right there. We all know that if you used to inward in real life in a bad way then you're going to get slaughtered in the community. That's a big difference this is why I do not understand why the people are getting so much on Joe Rogan from when he was reading off rap lyrics when he was saying the n word.
@@michaeloneill8452 nope it's not difficult for me let whitey say the n word in movies because that's under artistic expression which we all agree on no matter if you're black or white. This is why I support Joe Rogan because he was saying those rap lyrics under artistic expression
Bobby was the best partner Andy had. He was patient with him, understood him despite his faults, and I think molded him into the Andy we saw in later years.
One of the things I liked about this show was Andy’s journey from angry, drunk, loudmouth racist to decent human being. It wasn’t a straight line, or ever completed. You can’t ever erase that many years of hate entirely.
@@hungram5170 just started watching Breaking Bad. He let her choke on her own vomit. Had to turn the tv off after that. Will start watching again after a few days.
I hate political correctness but I understand how fancy is feeling and it does go into Andy's professionalism of how he handled the suspect in front of the journalist. You have to watch what you say in front of journalist because they have a history of making of twisting things around
I think Andy had no intention of racial profiling. The N word he used was certainly unprofessional but not in a racist way. Truth is that Kwazi was pushing it too far. Had he calmly cooperated with the detectives, none of this would’ve happened. That reporter wasn’t helping either. He didn’t bother helping Bobbi or Andy and instead jumped on the notion of racism.
Yeah, I never was real comfortable with “that’s my race’s personal word”. I was never comfortable with the thin blue line and cops lying for other cops. I mean what do you tell children when the see that word used by Mark Twain or Hariett Beecher Stole? Is that the best solution, our own little clubs with their own little words? That’s the answer? Not some form of reparations? Real reparations. Not a one-time check. Thomas Sowell doesn’t get to question my empathy, which he has. What a prick.
Agree but even if he was provoked he should have not shown his ass in front of that reporter because that report is going to report back to his people and that's going to be on the New York times in the next 24 hours and then the police department got a issue on their hands
@Gert Bonk Wrong. Andy was saying that as a throwback. Not a derogatory word. He wasn’t being racist. Granted, a fool for saying that in front of a reporter but not a racisf
@Gert Bonk I can use the word gay. I write a book about gay couples. I live next to a gay couple. And srsly? Threats? Bad things’ll start to happen? Should I prepare my last summons? Should I prepare my will? Should I make it an announcement that bad thing will happen and I might not make it the next day? We just don’t use those words out of respect. Andy wasn’t wrong. Racist? No. Baited. Yes. Because the reporter was there and he’ll change and twist the story to his greedy desires. Andy did not say the n word out of racism. He said it as a throwback. Like this: One person: “You’re talkin to the one fool who’ll speak up” Another person: “I’m looking at the one fool who can’t keep his mouth shut” It’s not racism. It’s a throwback. Get your head out of your butt
It is a little bit strange how a Polish guy was the poster boy for racism in the squad. But, a cop cannot be racist. And I guess somebody had to play one.
The acting was amazing. Truly. Fancy was getting a little too sensitive upon hearing the N word. Even going far as to harass Bobbi if he ever said the N word. Sure the word was unprofessional but to say Andy was being full blown racist, that’s not the case. Andy wasn’t actually being racist. That was more of a “you say this, I say this to you,” Truth be told, Kwasi was pushing the detectives’ buttons, not bother helping when questioned. Even the reporter wasn’t helping at all
Granted but at the same time Andy should have shown more restraint he knew those reporters were around him and they were going to report back to his people.
“... a little too sensitive.” C’mon. A black man has every right to be sensitive when hearing a white man use that word, even if the context is disputed. Surely we’ve learned this much.
One of the rare times I disagreed with Fancy. I know he needed to keep control of the situation but quasi was just as bigoted as Andy and I didn’t feel that fancy acknowledged it. But it was also a tough spot for him to be in.

Oh yeah. The "problem with the entire Western world" is that white people don't get to casually use the n-word as a taunt. Truly a tragedy for civilization.
This sequence of clips from NYPD Blue showing the superlative Andy predicts snowflake CULTure perfectly. Words don't hurt. Not physically. INTENTIONS and ACTIONS do. People need to grow the heck up. Stop being wusses.
Andy's intentions were racist. The clip makes that abundantly clear. "Your low-life homies decided to act their color," was a few seconds after he used the n-word. That's the textbook definition of racism.
Did you listen to Andy? Did you hear his tone? Hell, skip that. Did you listen to the next couple sentences? "A white girl was shot, too. Her only mistake was to be in a car on Howstead Street when your low-life homies decided to act their color," he said. If you think that racism isn't behind what Andy was saying, you're missing the point.

Love the way Bobby replied to Andy..."I am not comfortable with those words or the thoughts behind them". No further explanation necessary.
Really? They went at it later in a different episodes when Quasi is murdered and they’re dealing with his daughter.
BOBBY was a real gentleman 👏
Simone was absolutely right to call Sipowicz out on his comments.
Well, it was uncomfortable. After kwasi called himself that, I simply would have asked him is that what he thinks of himself
You could tell Bobby was holding his tongue when it came to what Andy said to Kwasi earlier.
