Skrillex did it for fun, but many artist, like the chainsmokers are trying fit into the fad. Skrillex was one of a kind in every way, and everybody wanted to copy him. He didn't try to fit in, but created a perfect hybrid of hardcore music and electronic to his liking, which branded a completely new definition of dubstep, he likely didn't intend.
Honestly I doubt he had the flip planned out ahead, he probably had the chops in pads or keys and started messing with them until he found a cool pattern to use.
Dubstep was but wobbles and mostly sounded like Flux Pavillion - I Can't Stop. Skrillex introduced synths and complex sound designs to make Brostep. Artists who failed to go that route evolved to form Deathstep. Dubstep could still be the most difficult genre to produce.
