#1 What is Torticollis and Does My Baby Have it?: Torticollis Treatment in Babies

  • Torticollis is a condition in which a baby's head is "twisted" or turned to the side and tilted to the opposite side. It can also happen in adults but this playlist is dedicated to the treatment of torticollis in babies. I would like to thank Bode's family who allowed me to come into their home for 6 hours at a time to film him starting when he was 1 month old. ...And then to return and do it again. Wow! Bode does not have torticollis. Bode was quite tolerant of being turned and stretched this way and that. I hope you find these videos useful. If you believe your baby has torticollis, consult your doctor and a pediatric physical therapist with experience treating a child with torticollis for a program specifically designed to address your specific child's recommendations. Do not delay. Earlier treatment is predictive of better outcomes and shorter treatment.
Here are the clinical guidelines for treatment of congenital Muscular Torticollis:

Hi. My daughter is about 8 months. Her neck was upright as the face straight when she was born up to this past 2weeks when I realized that she rotates her head from one side to the other but she has a preference (noticed) of tilting it right just like when you are in your walker and you watching but you tilt your head left and you can see the full side of the neck on the right. Even when she sits I saw this pattern lately. But it was not like this as I have videos and pictures of her holding her neck straight .
    Your advice

    • @pediatricPTexercises

It can be on the same side, but that is uncommon. It is unlikely to be caused by tightness in the sternocleidomastoid muscle. You need to consult with a physician to determine the cause of your child’s Torticollis.

My son also has a flat in his back head and the upper right of his head is longer or higher than the left side. I saw this very early about two weeks after birth, to his doctor but she said it's totally normal and that was surprising to me because his headshape was just so obviously lean. Now my boy is 15 months going 16 and it has not corrected. It hurt me so much as a mother and I feel I've failed my boy. I only hope he doesn't grow to blame or hate me for not getting his head shaped correctly right after birth 😢😢😢

Everything you’re saying so far is exactly what’s going on with my six month old. My doctor is not very helpful and doesn’t pay much attention. They say it’s normal, because babies lay on their head and that it will correct overtime. It’s something I’ve noticed since he was two weeks so I’m always worried about it. He has a bump of than a dip on the back of his head. They said it’s positional plagiocephaly. When baby came out, they told me I had a short umbilical cord. I’m curious now if that has anything to do with his head

My son is 4 months and pediatrician said he is developing a flatness on the back of his head on the left. He said his neck doesnt turn all the way to the right. Baby prefers to sleep turning towards the left and when on tummy time he likes to lift his head and turn to the left. Pediatrician recommended to sleep him on his side with his head turned to the right. I also try to get him to play on the side looking to the right and placing toys on the right. I took him to Chiropracter, i know lots of ppl don’t believe in them, but i believe thst did a difference. The only thing you have to still take your baby to therapy. The torticolis side is the obe that needs to be streched, and the other side needs to be strengthned. You have to remember that. I used the yoga ball, i used to strech his nexk with my hands. I used to hold him in air so he holds the otger side and it gets stronger. It’s hard to explain in a comment, but better you take baby to therapy and they will show you the steps. I have a question please?
My kid is 4 months. I figured this right flat side behind of her head. Also, she rotates her head to the right side, sleeps often on the right side. I noticed the right side of her forehead got bombed a little. I started, immediately, chnging her sleep position to the other side, have been trying to make her focus on the left side through physical activities I do to grab her attention. Now, my question is, would it be possible that I can adjust this through a physical therapy? Do you think a 4 month baby's skull can be adjusted without reaching a surgery level?
I'm Oumaima, from Morocco. I ve never heard of any of a competent physical-therapist in Morocco. They immediately suggest surgeries!!!! I'm trying to avoid that as much as possible.
Thank you for considering my questions .
    Kind regards,

Four months old is still quite young. In the United States, we would put a helmet on to help shape her head. We would not do surgery. A lot of head shape change can be made with making sure that she does not put pressure on the back right side of her head. Nothing is permanent yet.

I really loved this video. Let me tell you my story… I noticed my baby around 3 weeks old favored the left side. I addressed it with the pediatrician and was referred to a craneal doctor to rule out craniosynostosis. It took me 1 around a month for that appointment and by that time my baby was already 2 months old. Well, we ruled that out so I was relieved but was told to do some exercises for the side preference and the tilt plus to correct the plagiocephaly. I did that until my next appt with the pediatrician and by that time he was already 3 months. His tilt was much better though his side preference was still there. I was referred to a PT and that took another month. By the time he was 4 months he started therapy. Now, he’s 5 months. In combination with the PT and what I’ve done at home he’s much better but the side preference is still there. He hates tummy time. His arms are stiff, from what I read he has fixed shoulders and his vision range to the right decreased. I was referred to the physiatrist and EI. Now, I have to wait 2 more months to get an answer and my anxiety is killing me because I also read something about Excessive tones on his extremities. What do you think they’re trying to rule out now? Cerebral palsy? I mean I’m led to that conclusion from everything I’ve read. I’m exhausted and the waiting time is terrible.

Oh I can hear your stress and fear. I am so sorry for all the waiting. It sounds like your child keeps making progress. I cannot make an opinion For a child I haven’t ever evaluated personally. @@curreypanda6640 Thank you! I wish the same for yours. Next week is my appointment with the physiatrist, today I had an appt with his personal (through insurance) PT, Yesterday he had PT through EI, next week I will also scan for a helmet. PT wants to put a vest on for posture and sitting (I really don’t know the name of it). 2 weeks from now I have an appt with the neurologist. So, this is still on going, but I’m just hoping to get some answers from them to know exactly what I’m dealing with.

    • @pediatricPTexercises
      @pediatricPTexercises  2 ปีที่แล้ว

It could be something as simple as this was the direction that she was looking in the womb. Or, that she has gotten comfortable looking that way out in the room because of how you position her during the day. There can also be other more significant medical conditions. If you are not satisfied with your doctor’s opinion, you could always get a second opinion or get a evaluated by a Pediatric Physical Therapist

    Thank you for this video.
My son is 2 months old
I noticed that he favours his left side by the time he was 3 weeks old, i asked 2 paediatricians about it and they said it was normal, I couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong, especially that he also preferred to look up but he could move his neck to both sides and by the time he was 7 weeks old he could keep his neck stable for a couple of minutes.
Today at his monthly appointment, I asked the doctor about it again he examined him and told me there was no shortness in either side and just to massage the neck.
I’m still afraid and worried sick , I’m going to see another doctor tomorrow but the problem is I don’t think we have a physical therapist who specialises in babies here, I live in Syria.
You confirmed my fear I know now that he has torticollis , I think he only favours the side because I just did the stretches while he is sleeping and his ear touches his shoulder on both sides , and his neck rotation is like you said a little behind the shoulder.
I don’t know what to do now.
Plz can you give me some advice?
Ps: he can stretch his neck to look up.
