There are two things that need to be determined before any thought of re-signing Tavares should even be considered. First, it must be determined how much he has left in the tank and then what his new role with the team will be must be decided.
This is a player with declining foot speed approaching the point of aging out of the league. I suggest letting him play the last year of his contract and revisiting the extension question at the end of the upcoming season ...with a clearer idea of what he can still bring to the rink.
Love my Jony T. He will be a great 4th line center @ a 1.8 mill for 4 years.

No, so I can stop hearing about the “core 4”. It is so annoying that this is all the media ever talks about. If the media is so insistent you “can’t run it back”, then Tavares has to go before anyone else. Tavares is in the tail end of his career. He can be replaced with a new 2C. He cannot be in the 2C role forever.

Tavares is one of the only guys showing up for the biggest games. Him and Nylander.
Tavares is still a great player that any team would want, the problem is his cap hit. You would look at him completely differently if he was making 3-5M a year instead of 11. You pencil him in for 25 goals/60 pts.

He is signing to a 3 year deal for 9 million or 3 per year.Thats a great deal for Tavares.
I think Ullmark wants to play his way to UFA, but he’s also got to be a little nervous that if his game steps back this year due to being on a weaker team, and being counted on to play the majority of the games he could lose money. But then does he want to sign long term and get the cash, but be stuck in Ottawa if he doesn’t really want to be there?
Depending on what he sees himself if it’s 2 years as a number 2 Center and then the next 2 as a 3rd-4th line with about a 4m aav then then yeah. I’d say he has another 2 years left before he really falls off.
Tavares needs to sign a Spezza / Gio deal if he cares about winning here
If Tavares gets one of those maintenance issues that puts him on LTIR till playoffs like Stone and VGK do every year that will help TML load up at trade deadline for playoffs!
After that tops Tavares gets 5m X1 or hit the road fella!

@@cjmllvv Funny. The Leafs were a better playoff team without Matthews in their lineup as a playoff disappointment centre this spring. He is an elite sniper - much like OV, Selanne and Hull. But right now - PLD, Matthews and Laine are seen as disappointments.
Sad that Matthews might never even experience a playoff run - he is already 50% thru his career. Right now Matthews is known as the guy who tried and failed to score 70 & in doing so, Matthews only had one good game (game 2) this year in the playoffs.
At centre - with his poor passing skills Matthews only generates 30% to 50% assists of only the current top NHL assist leaders.
I am an avid Leafs Follower & Matthews fan - but let us start being honest. Matthews is tied at the bottom of scoring important goals - as he has zero playoff elimination game winning goals. Let us just pray Matthews plays in one Eastern Conference Finals. Maybe even - if he has to get traded to Florida or a playoff team, to do so. 😀

Jay, at this point John Tavares' comfort is pretty far down the list of priorities with this team. Time for major change. Don't want John back at any number. Don't want Mitch back at any number. And anyone else who doesn't like it can go with them. The cap space can be used far more efficiently.

They played amazing together until montreal knocked out tavvares. At the time it was a great signing, he was offered 13 mil from san jose and came to us at 11. Not bad signing at all, it just didn't work out

@NickRants It wasnt a good signing. Signing the captain from a team that did nothing in the playoffs. He becomes captain of the Leafs and the Leafs do nothing in the playoffs. That 11M AAV set off a chain of events that sealed their fate

He was a league leader in points multiple times, he broke the islanders playoff drought as well. There are way worse signings they could have made if they didnt sign Johnny T... Their biggest mistake was signing Marner before Point extended with Tampa. If they bridged him he would not be on such a ridiculous contract and demanding a raise.

Look, the Leafs have been running this back for years with ZERO success.. so, we keep hearing about change and how the Leafs have to change the dynamic and change the culture here.. Matthews and Nylander are both extended so the only 2 people that face not coming back are JT and Marner. People can talk all they want about how good Marner is ( and I agree, don't get me wrong) and how it's unfair he's getting chased out of town. Look, the only way to get out of these huge contracts and allow this team to afford the necessary changes needed are to either trade them ( if they can get them to waive their NMC's) or let them play out their last season and walk. People say we can't let them " walk for nothing" but they're not necessarily walking for nothing, the Leafs will free up over $20 million in cap space from 2 players.. you realize you can get some great players for that kind of money, players that will likely allow them to go deeper in the playoffs.. secondly, consider that the Leafs have died on the sword with this core and just how commited they were to these guys, neglecting other areas of their team/ line up and for what?? A single playoff win in how many years?? This is simply not acceptable.. So, if the Leafs are considering bringing back JT at $6 million per year, compare who else would be available at that cap hit and ask yourself who you'd rather have?? So as I look at the list of the FA's right now ( available or recently signed), who would you rather have?? Tavares , a 34 year old player who is still good, but how much more is in the tank? OR, would you rather have players like ( similar cap hit based on the free agent list) DeBrusk, Stamkos, Marchessault, Tarasenko, Lundell, Buchnevich ( $8 million hit but still less than JT's current $11 mill), Stephenson, etc.. I really hope the Leafs don't consider this and continue to make the mistake of making personal choices rather than smart business moves..

It's simple: The Leafs in their current format are going NOWHERE. Let Tavares and Marner WALK. That's right: Walk! A trade for Seth Jones or a Goalie would be nice. But they can completely reshape the team at the end of the first round of the playoffs next year with the extra $23 million that Tavares and that heartless Bum are eating up. No extensions. No Deals. Expose Marner for what he is: a talented, selfish Zombie. Somebody will sign him, but if the Leafs just let him walk, he'll get nowhere near 10 million, and maybe players just in it for the money will realize that unless you try, you don't get paid like a superstar anymore

Marner has 50 pts in 57 career playoff games JT 46 in 62.JT has worse Playoff numbers.JT is a defensive liability, slow and is getting up in age, Marner is a much better skater better on both ends of the ice higher ceiling potential.Marner already has better numbers than Tavares ever did in a season.Both though are overpaid.
@@alienspace3960 How many points does Marner have in games 6 and 7? He gets most of his points early in the series and in games that are pretty much decided. Marner is one of, if not, the softest “star” in the playoffs.

Tavares was the worst signing and is the main reason they haven't been able to build a balanced team. He was signed for 2x his value and he had a couple good seasons, but never a value season. HE should have been bought out this year to send a message. Strip him of the C, send him packing.
