Great video, thumbs up! Question please. Is it true that when recording long time videos, if the clips is larger than 2GB in size, the camera will automatically split the video into smaller files? If this is accurate, I find this disappointing. Here's an excerpt from the B&H site on the C100ii specs: "The camera records video to SDHC/SDXC cards using AVCHD, a high-efficiency codec that has quickly become a standard in both the professional and consumer video markets. Maximum bit-rate is 24 Mbps. Video files greater than 2GB are split into multiple files while recording, which are automatically joined together upon import using Canon Data Import."
I think it only does that in MP4 not AVCHD. I don't tend to record longer than a few minutes at a time so it's unlikely to hit 2GB, but one time it did (podcast recording) and when I put the two clips in the timeline there was zero lost frames or any wonky shit in the transition. It's functionally a non-issue. Also, knowing that, my guess is 2GB comes in around 30min. Total guess.
Thanks Ken. I am trying to decide what camera to get as I am just starting my video company to shoot corporate video. I am looking at the new Sony 7 iii as it has 10 bit 422 which is very nice to have. And why did you choose that Sigma lens and not the Canon 24-105 f4 for video
(haha just responded to your other comment) I picked the Sigma 18-35mm because it's one of the sharpest, cleanest lenses on the market with almost no focus breathing and even at f1.8 (which is amazing) it's still tack sharp. It's a perfect video lens, and I tend to shoot wide normally anyway. 15-40mm is my wheelhouse for s35 sensors. I'd say the Sigma 18-35mm is my favorite lens of all time.
How big and noticeable is the advantage of C300 mk1 over C100 mk2 ? Should I worry about 4:2:2 10-bits if I don't plan to adjust the color changes in post production?
Would you recommend this for a livestream setup? Maybe Using the hdmi out from this camera and a hdmi to sdi converter to go into a blackmagic switcher.

This is great. There is a used C100 mkII for sale in our area (asking $1800). Did you upsample the 1080p footage to 4k? We are currently using the EOS R6 and R. They are great and have some nice features. But the actual shooting experience with it, isn't fun. What do you think of the C100 mkII as a run and gun camera set up versus a modern hybrid mirrorless camera?
Yeah I just render out at 40mbps 4K and no one notices haha. Hands-down a cinema camera is going to be a better shooting experience than a mirrorless. It's purpose-built for that. DSLRs and the like are photo cameras that can also shoot video, so the ergonomics are for photo.
HI BRO I have two options to buy a Sony A7III or a Canon C100 II at the same price, I ask about sharpness, dynamic range and colors, and is the quality of Canon FHD really comparable to 4K
Is the FHD comporable to 4K? Yes. 4K is overkill in 90% of applications. Just because something is made doesn't mean people need it. Most people, without being told or seeing exif data, cannot visually differentiate a FHD video from a 4K one.
Thanks for the Video! It really helped me a lot! What lens do you recommend to start with as a decent allrounder setup? I want to do some short film, commercial stuff. 18-35 Sigma?
That lens is a hall of famer for sure, but if you need or want longer lenses obviously that's not going to be very useful. Depends on your taste as a DP. I personally shoot kinda wide but a lot of people might want, for instance, something more in the 50mm zone or want something with stabilization. There's no bad lens, just the right lens for the right job.
@@Owlbot Thank you, I appreciate your quick response! Since I’ve worked with Fujifilm Systems only, I absolutely have no clue what lens is a good video lens for the c100 (except super expensive cine lenses). I know it’s hard to tell or recommend the one and only lens that does every job. But maybe you can tell me your favorite that you think creates the most beautiful look - since I really like your video stuff (;
great video, I am looking at the C100 mark ii I film weddings and I am fed up with the limitations of mirrorless cameras. I think this camera the sigma 18-35mm would be perfect me, my only concern is having no image stabilisation at all, the EOSR has digital IS. which is better than nothing, how do you find that combo handheld, does the extra weight help? Have you any handheld footage with this combo I can have a look at. Many thanks in advance!
I am currently considering buying a Used C100 Mii as my entry camera. I've seen multiple recs' on the sigma lens, so I am probably going to get that as my priority lens until I can get enough money together to buy a second lens. As the Sigma kind of covers wideish-standardish ranges, Do you have any other recommendations on a really solid lens option that can cover the short/medium telephoto ranges? That way I can kind of have my bases covered in shot options, and upgrade from there.
I literally only used that lens for everything haha. Maybe the Sigma 50-100mm as a second one for that longer reach if you needed it. In my head a 15-40mm set or zoom is all I'd ever need if it had the character I wanted.
@@Owlbot Awesome, thank you! Makes me feel a bit better knowing you really only rely on that one lens. Since I wont be able to get a second for a while, makes me a bit more confident I maybe wont even need one for that entire while.
I mean it depends on what you shoot. For cinema work it's fine, for nature videos you'd want something longer, right? So just take a good look at the kind of work you're doing and figure out what length you'd need.
Is there any discount for purchasing the profile for a second camera platform? I bought the c100 last month, and have managed to get the c100mk2 now. Would love to have the profile on both cameras.
Hi Kenny, great video, thanks heaps. Man, its a tough decision, C100mkii or the new eos r6. Your footage looks so good. A couple of questions if you don't mind? Do you tend to shoot in CLog or wide dynamic range? Also, do you think its work recording prores to an external recorder? If not, which internal codec do you use? Thanks in advance, John
I shoot a modified Clog profile internally in AVCHD unless it's slowmo which is MP4. I tried recording to a recorder but found it didn't give me enough benefit to warrant the extra gear; it looks about as good as it can get SOOC.
Please help... bought the c100 lut for my c100 mark ii and it will not load onto the camera, what am I doing wrong. Unzipped the file and loaded the oc100 and the oc1002 file onto the sd card and tried to load it onto the camera... but is shows that sd card is greyed out on the camera as if it was empty etc... seriously frustrated.
So the big problem with this camera is the barrel plug for power (which isn't locking). I have a dtap to barrel adapter but even the tiniest little tug and it'll shut the camera off (always leave a battery in for safety). I've found some ways to work around that, usually just being super careful, but my best solution was just to use the Redrock Ultracage power distro, which DOES have a locking connector. I've nearly pulled my shoulder out getting that cable snagged on things so I can confirm it'll stay plugged in haha
May i ask - i've a7R3 + 6d2 canon, as long as sigma 24 1.4, canon 35 f2 is, 50 1.8 stm, 70-200 f4 (no is), 50 2.8 sigma macro (af) + 35 1.4 samyang, batis 85 1.8 (sony) This is for my photography - mostly wedding. But i wanted so much to get into video... should i use what i have or take a look at the c100-2? i find the 6d2 video a bit soft, but okay-ish. My pc is 4th gen xeon 4/8 threads, 16 ddr3, rx580 4gb. So far did 1 trailer with what i have, as i really enjoyed the DPAF. And many lessons learned.
Hey. What is considered too many total hours on the camera before it’s bad? I’m lookin at one that has over 1,000 hours of use. Also I have a 5D mk IV. Would this be better overall?
I don't actually know. Mine says it's at 600hr since the last reset (I don't know when that was) but I'm not actually sure what the like... "Limit" on hours is for the C100. 1K doesn't seem insanely high. A 5D will look nice, but no ND/XLR/Waveforms/Etc. Depends on your needs.
I have a handful of mics that I swap through depending on the need. You really can't go wrong these days, whatever suggestions you've probably seen already are likely accurate. Personally I use an MKH416, KM185, Joly Mod Oktava, and a Sennheiser G3 lav. I do wanna try more mics though just because I don't know much about audio.
great vid. Do you use atomos or bmagic? or no need. Sorry if you covered. Next vid....is it still viable in 2022!? yes!! PS. i already have 18-35 new collecting dust. hmmn.
Do you have any glitching footages when editing MTS file in resolve? Is there a way to solve problems beside using external recording? Anyway, I have 2 C100 II pair with Sigma 18-35 & 50-100. Absolutely love it until now. but wait. are you Peter Mckinnon's brother?
Haha, I don't know Peter, no. I havent't had glitching problems, sorry. I assume you've tried new cards? Do the glitches not show up in Premiere or other programs? Could be a GPU issue or, yeah, the card itself. Obviously the camera could be due for a tune-up but I dunno what CPS's position on the C100 series is.
@@Owlbot No problems in Premiere pro. it's only happen in Resolve. I have tried both Z840 and T7910, I dont think it cuz of the PC's spec. a lot of article was told that It needs to convert MTS (original c100 file) to others like Prores first before we start editing? I'm not sure. I've not tried external recorder yet.
Converting may fix it but generally the suggestion to make proxies is just because your original files are too beefy for your rig (which probably isn't the case here). That being said, Resolve uses your GPU more and Premiere uses your CPU so it still could be a GPU thing but yeah, try transcoding a clip that's glitching out and see if that doesn't fix it
I had that for a short bit but unfortunately never used it that often. The UI felt a bit dated but after you got past some of that and other little clunky things, it was honestly a DREAM to shoot on. All the buttons were so intuitive. If they make a c100 mark III with a gradual ND, 10-bit 422, a few higher bitrate options, better codec and if nothing else DP-AF on any lens, it’d be all over that.
I use a different camera but I wanted to know what you though about the noise reduction in camera. Should you leave it at the default or lower it all the way. Anyone can answer this please.
I would test it! Shoot a few seconds of footage at various settings and see what looks best to you. Generally I leave it at default but sometimes the lowest number actually means "off" (like 0 is still some NR but -5 is "off") so it's important to test. For all you know your cameras NR is better than the kind you're using in post (they're all different!) Sharpness, on the other hand, does usually get dialed all the way down, depending on the camera.
@@Owlbot makes sense, I have done that and the default does not look that bad to me but will lower it a bit to -2,-3 and for sharpness, I find since my footage in avchd is compressed, I allow the camera to do a little like -3 when -5 is completely off
great vid. so informative. thanks for the effort and the sharing. can you look into your future and imagine your next camera? c200? stay well. thumbs up.
Yup! Only center weighted unless you use specific Canon lenses then there's like Face Detect and shit (which I completely forgot about because I've literally only used the Sigma 18-35mm on this camera haha)
@@Owlbot i have the eos R but i feel like something is off. When i look at the c100 mkii theres something about that makes it still look better than the R at colors and images.
Well, different sensors obviously, and the C-Series is made specifically for video whereas the R is a photo camera that shoots video as well, so that checks out haha
I've almost never shot video with a DSLR so I couldn't tell you what it'd be like, but I have shot a ton of concerts with the C100 and it was a breeze.
I was mostly doing slower moves but I never felt worried it would miss or overshoot or anything. I hesitate to say "it always worked" but even in darker situations it did pretty well. I'm pretty sure you can adjust the AF speed but I had it on a slower setting just so it felt more "human". In general though Canon's DPAF is one of the better AF systems available.
@@Owlbot Cool, Thanks for the response. I have EOS R but never filmed sports with it because i want 120fps. I Recently purchased a Z Cam because of iots amazing specs and IQ. it has 4k 120fps but its no AF so im trying to decide the best bang for buck under $3k that can be used as a workhorse.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to make one when I made the new batch because it doesn't have SDI and the vectorscope I rented didn't have an HDMI-in. I may have a solution but it'll be a while till I can make that happen. Sorry guys :/ Not giving up on it though!
Far less practical, not S35, No NDs, No XLRs, I don't want to rig anything out (why get extra crap when it can be built in to the camera) and I've never seen any Zcam in the wild.
Honestly I'd agree with you Kai, it's definitely worth investing in 4K now. If you're making your own shit it's wholely irrelevant but I'd feel strange not being able to offer a client the option, or have it for post considerations.

Since I’ve worked with Fujifilm Systems only, I absolutely have no clue what lens is a good video lens for the c100 (except super expensive cine lenses). I know it’s hard to tell or recommend the one and only lens that does every job. But maybe you can tell me your favorite that you think creates the most beautiful look - since I really like your video stuff (;
great video, I am looking at the C100 mark ii I film weddings and I am fed up with the limitations of mirrorless cameras.
Worked fine for me. Basically everything I've shot on this channel that isn't me talking is handheld.
Send me an email
I’m all about the C100mkII love it👍
Hi Kenny, great video, thanks heaps.
@@Owlbot good to know, thank you.
Do you have any recommendations for external power? D-Tap solutions?
So the big problem with this camera is the barrel plug for power (which isn't locking). I have a dtap to barrel adapter but even the tiniest little tug and it'll shut the camera off (always leave a battery in for safety). I've found some ways to work around that, usually just being super careful, but my best solution was just to use the Redrock Ultracage power distro, which DOES have a locking connector. I've nearly pulled my shoulder out getting that cable snagged on things so I can confirm it'll stay plugged in haha
@@Owlbot thanks. To confirm, if I have a battery in place, I will maintain power, even if the barrel disconnects?
I *believe* so. That's the case with my C500, I haven't used the 100 in a while but I'm pretty sure it works that way too
May i ask - i've a7R3 + 6d2 canon, as long as sigma 24 1.4, canon 35 f2 is, 50 1.8 stm, 70-200 f4 (no is), 50 2.8 sigma macro (af) + 35 1.4 samyang, batis 85 1.8 (sony)
This is for my photography - mostly wedding.
V PR I think the 6d mark ii is a mini C100. Right now our dslr is a t5i but we want to upgrade and are considering the 6d.
Hello,. can you upscale it to 4k ?? does it look good ?
Do you shoot clog in Avhc or mp4?
Hey was wondering what microphone did you use to pair with your c100? Im trying to research for one right now
I have a handful of mics that I swap through depending on the need. You really can't go wrong these days, whatever suggestions you've probably seen already are likely accurate. Personally I use an MKH416, KM185, Joly Mod Oktava, and a Sennheiser G3 lav. I do wanna try more mics though just because I don't know much about audio.
I have it. It's a fantastic camera!
great vid. Do you use atomos or bmagic? or no need. Sorry if you covered. Next vid....is it still viable in 2022!? yes!! PS. i already have 18-35 new collecting dust. hmmn.
I don't use either for the C100
That being said, Resolve uses your GPU more and Premiere uses your CPU so it still could be a GPU thing but yeah, try transcoding a clip that's glitching out and see if that doesn't fix it
If 2K upskale to 4K does this image been great?
I had that for a short bit but unfortunately never used it that often. The UI felt a bit dated but after you got past some of that and other little clunky things, it was honestly a DREAM to shoot on. All the buttons were so intuitive. If they make a c100 mark III with a gradual ND, 10-bit 422, a few higher bitrate options, better codec and if nothing else DP-AF on any lens, it’d be all over that.
Link to the cage and handle please
Ah man, Redrock went outta business I think. Their whole website is "sold out" 😕
It's the Redrock Micro Ultracage though if you can find one used.
@ thank you 🙏🏿 I’m excited this is my first cinema camera . 🙂
For all you know your cameras NR is better than the kind you're using in post (they're all different!)
Sharpness, on the other hand, does usually get dialed all the way down, depending on the camera.
@@Owlbot makes sense, I have done that and the default does not look that bad to me but will lower it a bit to -2,-3 and for sharpness, I find since my footage in avchd is compressed, I allow the camera to do a little like -3 when -5 is completely off
does canon's dual pixel autofocus still work with the sigma 18-35?
Yup!
Wasn’t expecting a lot wit this video.. but… damn you were entertaining. Lol. Not toooo funny.. but funny, and you shared some good tips.
Damn… u just lost me at, “monopod to the head.” Lol
Earned my respect back at… “Palm Springs”
Thinking about getting this but it's hard to pick when you can also get the GH5 which is better in almost every way
Haha, I just got one today!! ;-)
great vid. so informative. thanks for the effort and the sharing. can you look into your future and imagine your next camera? c200? stay well. thumbs up.
I just got a C500mkII in January, there's some stuff on this channel shot with it/about itm
Does the 18-35 have face tracking or is that only for efs stm lenses
No face tracking, sadly..😔
It works on my C500 but not the C100
It still doesn’t have it even if you update the firmware on both body and lense?
worthy content thanks..
I love my c100 mk2..
THANK YOU
thankkk youuu
Man, you have great audio!
Doing my best!
@@Owlbot what mic are you using?
@@Promiatv Neumann KM185
does it have dual pixel too?
Yup! Only center weighted unless you use specific Canon lenses then there's like Face Detect and shit (which I completely forgot about because I've literally only used the Sigma 18-35mm on this camera haha)
C100 mkii vs eos R what do you think
Depends on your needs
@@Owlbot i have the eos R but i feel like something is off. When i look at the c100 mkii theres something about that makes it still look better than the R at colors and images.
Well, different sensors obviously, and the C-Series is made specifically for video whereas the R is a photo camera that shoots video as well, so that checks out haha
@@Owlbot can the c100 mkii replace the R for live events n music videos
I've almost never shot video with a DSLR so I couldn't tell you what it'd be like, but I have shot a ton of concerts with the C100 and it was a breeze.
How is face tracking with this camera?
Couldn't tell ya. I've always shot with the Sigma so it wasn't compatable.
OWL BOT ahhh okay gotcha. How reliable is the AF? I’m thinking of this for filming sports.
Maybe a used C200 or a Pocket 6K? AF on the Pocket 6K is tough though
Why they call it cinema camera when it looks like video?
I wrote an article about that: www.provideocoalition.com/canon-c70-review/
I'm assuming the OWLCOLOR C100mkII Picture Profile
wont work for the c100
It might. He said he working on one for c100
Unfortunately I wasn't able to make one when I made the new batch because it doesn't have SDI and the vectorscope I rented didn't have an HDMI-in. I may have a solution but it'll be a while till I can make that happen. Sorry guys :/
Not giving up on it though!
It is so annoying that the C100mk2 Face Detection only works with STM lenses
It's been so long I completely forgot it even had that feature 😂
But why not just get a Z Cam E2C and rig it out for about the same price
Far less practical, not S35, No NDs, No XLRs, I don't want to rig anything out (why get extra crap when it can be built in to the camera) and I've never seen any Zcam in the wild.
Good Good~
I just came here for the thumbnail and I got disappointed.
Check my reel for that shot haha. Also the P&Co "Dark Daze" videos, for all the related shots. It's on the "collaborations" playlist.
Personally I think going into 2020, most stuff are shot in 4k now. It is better to invest in a 4k camera.
Because everyone is doing it you gotta do it? I don’t think so that’s just following the crowd
not really
But anyway even if you only shoot 1080p now every cameras shoot 4k. It is better to have the 4k option then only 1080p option.
Honestly I'd agree with you Kai, it's definitely worth investing in 4K now. If you're making your own shit it's wholely irrelevant but I'd feel strange not being able to offer a client the option, or have it for post considerations.
@@Owlbot For me i dont really care about 4k its more about the cost. still not affordable enough to get a 4k rig.
