A Summer walk around Historic Brockenhurst in The New Forest

A walk around Brockenhurst, the largest village in The New Forest. We visit the war graves cemetery, walk through the village centre and look for the famous New Forest Ponies and Donkeys. We even visit Brockenhurst Beach!

The video was filmed in early June 2020, when we were coming out of the first coronavirus lockdown. The churches, restaurants and pubs were all closed, but the weather was wonderful, the New Forest ponies had their foals and the donkeys still stopped the traffic.

70 years ago, I was the lad who, for many years, pumped the organ at the St. Nicholas church, right up in the belfrey; an interesting spot to obseverve the congregation below at Matins service. The organist was a very old spinster with an incredibly lined face. Rather cruely but aptly we all call her the tortoise.

My uncle fought in the Maori Battalion and is buried at St Nicholas. My mum and I travelled to Brockenhurst for the first time August 2023 to visit our great uncle who is buried in the commonwealth war graves. We did a haka for him in the cool morning sun all by ourselves. Generations of family grief poured out of us that morning. It was such a privilege to be there. We’d love to thank the caretakers and the people of the St Nicholas Parrish for so lovingly caring for our families gravesites.
