I collected my daphnia from a local pond in early May 2020. The daphnia I have are mixed with cylops and other ostrocods, though the daphnia. Last year I cultured them outside. At the end of the tubbing season, I drained the water down to about 2-3". As soon as the spring temperature were regularly above 50F, they started hatching. I then filled the pond with dechlorinated tap water. I've already started an indoor culture for the upcoming Winter. The one thing I really like about feeding daphnia is that it's almost impossible to overfeed, since the daphnia are perfectly fine in the tank with the fish. They eat any remaining daphnia once they're hungry again. This video is a very clear explanation of how to culture daphnia indoors. Thanks for sharing the info!
Dude that is an amazing amount of daphnia! I've just got a small culture that I'm growing out but hoping i can get a thriving culture like yours one day.
Thank you very much for your comment! I would like to add water changes are important for daphnia because of our ability to overfeed a little bit over time. I used a very fine mesh net over the siphon for water changes and I recommend changing water ~sooner than weekly depending on size of aquarium or containers they are in.
@@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies yes I've found the same thing since my first comment. I put a fine sponge over the syphon and change water every time I add green water which is about every three days. They are thriving!
Thank you! This was very informative. I'm starting my colony from eggs today and after this video I feel much more confident in how to care for them :)
Hi, I was wondering how your Daphia cultures are going. I should be getting mine today or tomorrow and I’m getting two little tanks set up. I wonder if you have any more tips. Your video is great though so much information thank you.

@@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies ok. Thank you! I tried before with Daphia. I hope it works for this time. I have one culture outside and one culture inside thanks for your quick response. Your videos is the best I’ve seen.
@@rosie2155 aw thank you very much! I wish your daphnia the best of luck. Fish absolutely love them and it enhances their colors and instinctual behaviors, totally worth it. Most especially good for fry to understand a fishes pecking order, naturally. Best of all is watching the fry play king of the daphnia.
I get my daphnia egg from dry pond two years ago with daphnia once grow in it, I took mud from it and added water after four days few eggs of daphnia and ostracods Are hatched now it thousand by number.
i added water with chlorella to an outdoor culture, there was an algae bloom and i though all of them died. i came back 2 weeks ago and there were like 10000 in there. ill try ro do that again soon.
Ive tried all of them so different tanks have different ones but overall i think ADA aqua soil is king and fluvial stratum is a great option at a good price. Sand works fine, gravel works fine but IMO aqua soil is totally worth it if your going to keep live plants.
hello i work at a company that makes powdered foods like powered carrots, powdered broccoli, powdered avocado and anything you can think of. would these be a good food for the daphnia? what would be the ideal powdered food to mix with the flour?
I have tried many things, including chlorella and spirulina, however I would stand by the yeast as it yields the highest outcome IMO. You can always give it a shot and see, just remember frequent water changes to protect from overfeeding.
I usually have it on 12-18 hours a day. I goal is to have a strong light that can produce green water as a natural food source in between the yeast and spirulina powder water mixture.
Beware, intense lights may weaken the plastic on the small containers. Interesting about the red lamp. I wonder if they are attracted more to uva or uvb spectrum?

Great video, I need to culture some daphnia🙂
You should! They are an easy food source even if it is seasonal and guppies seem to like them even more than brine shrimp IMO

Thats awesome! yea I have some smaller 5 gallon aquariums that where if the population crashes- just wait a couple of days and the eggs will rehatch!
The gen-z/boomer comment had me cackling suddenly outta nowhere 💀

About how many gallons do you keep those larger containers at? Do you find it still works best after all this time?
How do you fertilize the brood? Do you just pop the the top and nut on the surface or do you need to stir it up afterwards?
yes you just nut on the top - it will impregnate everyone. Just make sure you have the prenuptual agreement
I think I've heard of that. It's called a skimmer right?
@@grantrogers2823 Very similar to protein Skimming
I'm so glad I asked this. It's that time of the month again

I think the red light is better because the algae grows better in red light maybe?

Thanks

Yes green water is absolutely the best IMO and chlorella is a superfood.
@@Nice-Poeci-Fancy-Guppies Yeah
What temperature range can they be kept at?
Between 68-74 degrees Fahrenheit has always worked for me
They are so cute! Pity they are a fishey’s favorite food.
Thank you.

Are you selling daphnia culture?
I apologize, not at this time.

What do you feed as bait?
I use bakers yeast for their food and feed the daphnia to guppies i breed.

Yea thats actually why i chose that red LED, wonderful surprise!
Without starter it's work
How giv full details
I started with eggs and then bought live so it was a mixture but eggs take a longer time and more finessing the feeding scale.
Btw you can buy 5 gallons here at only 6 bucks
