    I made this after episode 27 (chapter 5) but decided to not release it until the chapter was over, to reduce possible 'spoiler-ish' speculation as to where this chapter was heading :)

      In all honesty, I am hoping that there will be a version of Deadly Dragons that doesn't require SkyUI because I am one of those shmucks that has CC content (the ones that are absolutely recommended, like Forgotten Seasons and Pets of Skyrim), and I honestly don't want to temporarilly stop my own Let's Play because of every Skyrim SE update when using skse64.
      What I mean by that is, I would like to have the dragon fights just as hard for my character, just don't want to go through all of the hoops.

      So... Leonard isn't going to realise that poisons stack then? I don't mind the dragon fights, because you're so freaking good at playing him as incompetent at archery... I cried with laughter at the first dragon fight... but I was honestly looking forward to seeing him deal with the two dragons at the dig site. And does this put the LOTD on hold for now?

    • @agentrex1
      @agentrex1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i do agree that the fights shouldnt be easier especially for leonard love his character though it can get a little dull if half an ep is 1 dragon fight slowly plinking away not sure what would work but i dont think sacrificing the fear and power a dragon brings is the answer

    • @proideot
      @proideot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think the complaint is less kind to the length of the fight, and more with the frequency of them. Because Skyrim has a lot of dragons, and if every 5 episodes you lose about half the episode to fighting a dragon, that's a tenth of a series watching someone pull out a crossbow and plink a dragon until it takes pity and lies down to die.
      Personally, I feel like installing a mod for less frequent dragon attacks would allow you to keep having dragons be an apocalyptic threat, while avoiding making them bog down the episodes too often.
      After that, I'm wondering if you could enable something to have him attack dragons in a wider array of methods, but the less frequent dragon attacks would probably work.

      I didn't think an explanation from you was necessary, Gopher. Leonard's style is exactly that.. "Duck and run" when it comes to anything that he can't kill with poisons. But if you are intending to try something to fit into your game without taking too much away from the current style of dealing with Dragons, why not go get some Dragon companions like Odahviing and that undead Dragon from the Dawnguard DLC? Plus, you can learn the "Marked For Death" shout to weaken the dragons and also, if you aim that shout carelessly, you could hit Inigo and more comedy might ensue. Just my thoughts. Take care.

    I was the one who left that "Fights one dragon for 40 minutes comment" and I just wanted to clear up that I was and am well aware of the roleplay and was just making a silly joke, I actually really like how Leonard handles Dragons... you know... like a normal effing person, which is to say screaming and running away and seeking help from others. Don't change a thing man, this is one of the most unique playthroughs I've ever watched.

    Have people not been paying attention through the rest of this playthrough?
    "I can't use a fire spell, I might burn my hand!"
    Personally, Leonard arriving at the top of the Throat of the World and the whole "OMG, a dragon!" and promptly running away was hilarious.
    Gopher, please DO NOT shorten the Dragon fights. The "No, no, no! Not doing it," attitude of Leonard (when it comes to fighting Dragons) is what makes this playthrough.
    I honestly think that you should ask your viewers in tonight's stream, whether you should abridge the fights. I think a lot of them will say, "No."

    • @GophersVids
      @GophersVids  5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I won't shorten the fights, but I may cut the footage a little more to save time for the viewer whilst still trying to get across Leonards frustration and fear. Just leave the more 'salient' or entertaining bits.

    • @CosmereInformant
      @CosmereInformant 5 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      You could also throw in the occasional scene of him telling the fight as a story to someone.
      “And so i heroically drew my bow”
      *cut to panicked screaming for shadowmere”
      “And set about fighting the beast all by myself. Inigo was there too”
      *cut to him hiding in a tent in a bandit camp yelling ‘did you kill it!?’*
      “It was over in moments”
      *a cut to him absorbing the soul breathing heavily in pitch blackness. ‘You know inigo, it was morning when we got stuck here’*
      Sorta like your opener with Astrid.
      That kinda thing could get you at least two or three fights condensed down to a few minutes.

    Hey Gopher! I find the way Leonard fights dragons absolutely hilarious and entertaining. Of course a dragon should never be so easy to take down.
    The issue is that I think dragons spawn too frequently in Vanilla Skyrim which makes one think "Oh there comes another dragon.", making them just another generic enemy. Perhaps using a mod that takes down the dragon spawn frequency a bit will help. I find it slightly irksome that once the dragon spawns it keeps following the player character around so the player can't really escape the fight when they don't feel like it.
    It'd also be great to see Leonard become more inventive in his ways of dragon-slaying. I am not sure if there's a mod that'd allow you to set up and deploy some traps and then lure the dragons into them. Using a followers mod to allow you to recruit a small force of guards/npcs to fight the dragon is also another suggestion.

There's no question in my mind. I know you felt it important to address the comments of the viewers, but keep doing exactly what you're doing with this Let's Play. What sets you apart from most of the others is the care and planning, the forethought, that you're putting in your narrative choices. There are others that do this as well, but not many. Most are just playing. You're doing far more that just role playing; you're crafting a story within the Skyrim framework in a way that's unique, and bloody brilliant as far as I'm concerned. Why does a character who tends towards flippant moments (partly because he's a smartarse, partly because he's a bit defensive about things he's either not good at, or doesn't quite understand, IMO) having a silly name for a shout not sound right for roleplaying? Sure, Gopher's poking fun at some of the mechanics or sillier parts of the quest writing/design sometimes, but IMO he stays in character perfectly well, and remains definitely on the right side of the fourth wall, just bumps into it occasionally, and goes 'argh'.

      @@starilvara Exactly. That IS what role playing a character's personal traits are supposed to be. Gopher does Leonard's character traits superbly well. There is a big difference between just doing a Let's Play run through of a game without a story driven character, and a Role Play requiring the player character to have quirky character traits. Kind of like when movie & television actors go from one movie to another, they have to role play the character they are portraying in that particular movie. You see a lot of LP's on TH-cam, but few Role Plays with this level of character depth. Gopher has pulled this off very well. Have a great one out there!

    Lenny having a natural human reaction to a dragon is the whole reason I love him so much. His character is so amazingly normal yet not normal. Willing to get power for himself like artifacts and even killing/thieving for coin.
    He's one of the most interesting characters I honestly believe you've made so far and I've been here since your first skyrim playthrough.
    Keep up the good work, I absolutely love Lenny and how you play out each of your characters. Never change a thing ❤

    It really feels like Leonard should have a quest where he can get more guards patrolling the roads. Or more skirmishes of the imperials and storm cloaks that could turn on a dragon should one appear. You know the skirmish breaks out they're fighting each other dragon shows up they fight it then they disband because they've lost so many on both sides. Seems like a more friendly way to handle dragons.also it would make navigating a little bit more funny when you run across stormcloaks and imperials and you have to find a way around them. Forcing you into fighting a troll or whatever just to get around them.

    I really like the personality Gopher has given Leonard. His feeling of self-importance and wanting to be thane of all holds is well offset by his absolute fear of facing dragons. It's a good mix and the times when he is forced to face a dragon are very comedic and enjoyable. I would like to see the few dragon souls he collects lead to deep consideration of what shouts to use them to unlock. Particularly, I would like to see Leonard get the Throw Voice shout because I think it could be useful for sneaking, but as I recall, the dragon that unlocks that shout was pretty hard to defeat and easy to run away from, so maybe that won't happen.

      My points stand, though, dragons should be tough and lethal (lore fact). Killing it fast is boring (individual opinion). Be it Gopher or others. I left other's Skyrim LP because their dragon fights are too brief.
      But, if Gopher (or anyone) struggles to kill one single non-dragon (and non-colossi) enemy for 30 mins or more, then you are right, in general it would be tedious and boring.

    Unfortunately, the ultra-long dragon fights still get pretty tedious because, somewhat ironically, very little actually happens even though you're engaging in life-or-death combat. I can see how it makes sense for Leonard's character, but that doesn't make it any less tedious to watch.
    I grant that you manage to do as good a job as anyone probably could to make them entertaining despite that, what with the banter and all. But even so, I really do appreciate how you've used mods to drastically reduce how many dragon attacks there are. The rest of the series is much more fun to watch than the dragon fights, so it's good that you focus more on that.

    If I may include a possible mod suggestion, as Leonard is into poisons and being the Listener, perhaps a mod that enables the Khajiit Caravans to sell Jarrin Root could fit nicely. Sure it is insanely OP, but it may fit with him moving to such a poison made with the root being a last ditch effort of sorts to make those watching him fight a dragon seem far more powerful than he is. He seems the type to employ such misdirections possibly to give him a tad more gravitas with Jarls so guards would be a bit more lenient with his gathering habits.

    Would you consider some other bulkier follower, Hoth per example, as a backup for harder fights where you require some muscle? Would be a bit harder to manage two followers but even then I believe Leonard would love a meat shield.
    Something else to consider is Courage and Rally on your followers. Fits the elegant illusion theme and also the "cheering from the sidelines" theme

    I'm surprised Leonard hasn't realized the benefits of shouts yet. Sure, he needs to get dragon souls to unlock them, but even the first word for "Marked for Death" would be absolutely invaluable in any encounters, not just dragons. It just seems a bit silly to me that the only thing Leonard uses shouts for is avoiding getting wet (although he'll surely use shouts to clear out the rain often now that he can).

    It's so awesome to hear how hard you've made the dragons, I never knew you made them so much more than just master difficulty
    Somethings I wish didn't scale as much, like poison resists in pretty basic goons, as Leonard is an undeniable master alchemist but dragons should be total tanks, armoured & heal & have fire attacks that force an army to take cover. Anything a humanoid mage can do, a dragon should be able to do bigger
    Surely everyone here actually comes to watch Gopher tell a story & Leonard is a masterpiece!

    I kind of like the idea of Leonard spending his time paying the college guy to enchant multiple "Resist Element" gear, and (since magic still isn't natural for him) not thinking of a general purpose "Resist Magic" enchantment. You have multiple sets of special gear, but they're only really useful against specific breeds of Dragon. You can have a slightly quicker battle, but only if you happened to encounter a Dragon that matches whatever Leonard happened to prep for on this particular trip. Also, occasionally having Leonard have an easier time with a Dragon would most likely puff up his ego, only to have it horribly and hilariously crushed when the next Dragon doesn't line up with his preparations. (Also would work as a decent money sink, because Leonard pretty much has no real need for money anymore, which really kills his original motivations as a thief. Could you imagine Leonard's reaction to finding out he's spent his entire savings trying to make himself Dragon-proof, and not only does it not completely work, but he's completely broke? Leonard's dilemma of trying to hide that he's a penniless Thane?)

Too many backseat gamers on YT (and many LPers) basically just want to munchkin the game and get all the best gear and be a stealth archer, so it's great to see someone really developing a character with personality.

    Mr. Gopher, may I just say that I am absolutely honoured you mentioned my extraordinary sarcasm in one of your videos. I had no idea you were modding to increase Dragon difficulty. The only things I would add to these ideas, and they are great ideas, is to mod to make Dragon encounters Hella infrequent, as well as actually having Lenny realize at some point, that when he hears a Dragon off in the distance, that theme music isn't the Dragon's. That theme music is the theme of The Dragonborne!
    Ideally, Lenny will basically just realize it and allow it to embolden him into actually attacking a Dragon one time, and possibly use that experience to become slightly less avoidy or hesitant in future! Not allow him to become the ultimate Warrior or Slayer or Hero, just a little bolder, or using the theme music to talk himself into actually being a slight bit of hero from time to time, even if not to benefit anyone but himself.
    It would probably be hilarious to see Lenny gather all his housecarls across Skyrim to do Dragon battle too! Or, how many Merc's is Lenny willing to actually pay to help him fight a Dragon, before having to go recruit his own housecarls? Either which way, or any other, appreciate it Sir!
