Delta is so heavily invested in the 757/767 series that it's a big step away from them.
Boeing certainly misjudged the time they had to develop a replacement for them.

Boeing’s new aircraft are consistently the safest in the world. The 777’s only fatal accidents in nearly 30 years of service and almost 1700 built have been a result of pretty much everything else EXCEPT Boeing. For a long time the 777 never had a fatal accident whatsoever, and was the poster child of commercial aviation safety. I believe it still is. Rolls Royce had engine issues, Asiana had pilot training issues, the Russians shot one down, and a Malaysian pilot did something to deliberately crash one into the ocean.
There have been zero fatal accidents involving the 787 despite 10 years and over 1,000 airframes in service. The same things cannot be said about Airbus’ comparable aircraft, the A330, which had an accident cause primarily by a fundamental system featured on ALL Airbus aircraft. The A350 is still too new to really judge, though I’m sure it will prove an extremely safe platform.
Boeing’s problems with the 737 were largely caused by the unsuitability of the platform to the upgrades they were trying to make at the request of their airline customers like Southwest.

Physical size wise, although the B767 fuselage is only one seat per row smaller, it is 1/8 or 12. 5% smaller.
The heaviest part of the A330-200 /800 is unfortunately its wings. The A330 has a class5 wing that it shared its structural commonality with the long range A340. The B767 on the other hand has a much smaller class 4 wing.

My guess is that airbus is trying to lead boeing into committing to the B777X Freighter, and when boeing does that it will be another stretch for boeing to do the NMA at the same time. That is when airbus will probably strike again with the A322 as the B767-300ER replacement leaving boeing completely helpless in the NMA segment.
The alternative outcome is boeing did not respond to the A350F attempts, in which case they will concede a portion of the Freighter market to airbus in which case boeing will be able to commit to the NMA when airbus make its next move.
Either way, airbus did well in driving boeing into the corner. Boeing is bound to lose something, just a matter of big or small.

Crazy to think that Delta would go from an all-Boeing fleet to primarily Airbus in such a short time. DAL’s 757 and 767 airframes are pretty old as is, and cabin refreshes aside, aren’t exactly getting any younger. Give it a few years and all that will be left are the 737-900’s. Those are still new planes, but even then, their long-term future remains uncertain.
767X is the move. Can share development costs alongside the reworked freighter variant, better economies of scale, shorter time to bring to market. Supply chains and part networks are also more established.

I think you can officially say goodbye to the 757-200 and A320-200 planes. Many of those were bought by Northwest Airlines before they merged with Delta and need to be replaced. Delta may snap up as many used 737-900ER's as possible for use as A320 replacements.

It's not so much that Delta's vast inventory of aircraft is very old and very inefficient - that's pretty much every legacy airline - it's that as their fleet ages, Delta refuses to refit interiors and flies dingy, dirty, rattly old planes with broken amenities (power, IFE, etc.) staffed by some of the most uncaring and rude cabin staff in the skies. Squeeze every dollar out of every air frame - US customers will still fill the seats.

They were subsequently supplemented by the B747 and other twin aisle aircraft, mainly on hub to hub services. However, the market today is for point to point, hence the demand for suitably sized aircraft.
