It seems like he constantly put her down. Speaking from personal experience, she probably wasn't a lesbian when they got together, but after so many years of constant verbal abuse, she found someone that treats her well and looks at her as if she loves her so she took the opportunity to be happy. Just because someone ends up dating someone of the same gender doesn't mean they were always that way. I am straight, but there was a time I accepted attention from a female because I was so beaten down and she made me feel like I mattered, but ultimately, I wasn't comfortable with the situation and we decided to just be friends.

There are some legal processes in some states that allow you to proceed without the other person signing but they take years and require a lot of extra work.
