Throwing your hands up in the air and walking out on your family is just about the most selfish and cowardly thing that anyone could do.

Daphne Maxwell Reid gets a bad rap from Janet Hubert fans who claim she was a bad replacement, and I don't think she deserves that at all. She just wasn't given a whole lot to do by the writers after the switch, but she did have a few moments where she got to shine and did them very well - that scene was one of them. Other great moments from her are when she kicked Phil's ex Janice out of the house; grounded Ashley with Phil but also tearfully hugged her to remind Ashley she was only doing it because she loved her; left Phil for a while when their marriage was crumbling; and the episode where the family pastor made a move on her. I really think Daphne deserves a lot more credit from the fans.
As an adopted child, I can definitely feel Will's pain. I was abandoned by my biological parent too. A child should not have to deal with the pain some birth parents cause. I know first hand how being abandoned feels. To anyone out there dealing with abandonment issues, I'm here for you.
Thanks it's a struggle at times my biological mother left the day before my high school graduation without a word I know others will say it's not the same cause she was there til I was done with high school, but it's a pain to have it and then get it ripped apart.
Fellas, let this be a lesson if you’re currently a father, soon to be a father, or plan on being one in the future. Don’t be anything like Lou (a terrible father) and be just like; or closely similar; Uncle Phil (a great father)
@@jackspiracy3431 guess....I think you can probably admit now "darkest ever" was a bit of hyperbole there but all good man I'm picking up what you're laying out .
Lou should be ashamed of himself for walking out on his own son- big props to Uncle Phil for stepping in and being Will's legal guardian and true patriarch to his nephew. As we all know, sometimes, uncles have to step in and be legal guardians to their nieces and nephews, whomever they are!!!
When I first found out that I was going to be a father I was scared to death. But I didn't run, I stayed and learned to be a parent and the best father I could be for my daughter. She is an adult now, almost 27 and a very hard-working, upstanding young lady.
This episode was so serious and emotional. One of the rare episodes where you barely get a laugh and the audience and Will knows it. It’s a harsh lesson: a father who abandoned his son is no joke, it’s horrible. Then comes back, acts like he’s changed and ends up rebounding. That is called pathetic as well by the way!
I can relate to this scene because both of my biological parents were absent from life. I know this is just entertainment, but their is always a group of family members that come thru for a child abandoned. He describes the rage, abondonment, lack of support, and feelings of rejection.
It’s felt like a curse, a consistent challenge to know and understand my worth though this journey I walk. Never knowing exactly if my worth actually means anything if from what I’ve currently experienced, seen, heard over the years has been a by product of my past or a realization of people’s actual views on each other and myself. That the appreciation of one’s importance is delusional and a lie. Now that i face the possibility of death due to potential cancer. The biggest question that haunts me will I leave as I came or die knowing I truly meant something more than just a damn mistake
Mood right here. I was 5 monthes premature in an incubator at the time and bio dad was all like "yeah, not my problem." He's back in contact now but he will never be a dad to me. He gave that up the moment he walked out 25+ years ago.
Ben Vereen said in interviews that people came up to him and dogged him over this episode. He said people would just yell out to him, "How can you leave Will?!", "Why you leave Will?". I think he also said after he was done doing the scene, he cried backstage.
@@darkstalkerkaathe4582 It’s unfortunately not uncommon. Margaret Hamilton had an episode on Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood just to set children’s minds at ease about her after her role as the Wicked Witch of the West. Jack Gleason and Lena Heady got death threats for their roles as Joffrey and Cersei on GoT (Gleason even retired from acting, possibly because of the threats). As did Laura Bailey because she voiced Abby in TLoU 2. Some people just can’t differentiate between fiction and reality.
I believe it. The man who played Edith's attempted Rapist on All In The Family got punched in the face by crazed Fans while he was just innocently drinking a coffee in a Cafe! 😱😳🥶😵💫
Lou walked out on Will in front of Uncle Phil. Lou gave up his right to be a father, right then and there and Uncle Phil proved why he was a father figure to his nephew, Will. Lo and behold, Will gains a stepfather in his ex-fiancee-turned-stepsister Lisa's father, Fred, but Uncle Phil remained his legal guardian!!!
People don't give Ben Vereen enough credit for playing Will's deadbeat dad so well that you really hate him. Excellent acting in a scene full of excellent acting.
Ben Vereen burst into tears after he walked off the set in this episode, from what he said in an interview... And this has one of the best Daphne-as-Vivian lines (I wonder how Janet Hubert-Whitten would have done here) to Lou...
John Burke -- One of the best things an actor can achieve is making a character unlikable. The worst thing they can do is make a character boring, if they're boring they're not worth the audiences time to be invested in, they become forgettable. What they're supposed to do is breathe life into them to make the audience become invested in the character, for good or for bad. Ben Vereen did the mark of a good actor. Not just make the character alive but make the audience hate them, its a task within itself to make the character likeable, but to push it from basic investment, to being unlikable is a challenge.
Ever since becoming a mom, things like this just get to me. They have always made me empathetic and sad but its on a whole new level now. Seeing how trully devastated and dejected Will is here, just hits me in a different place. I have a son, and I can't imagine him growing up w/o his daddy. We r so blessed to be a loving family with support and love on all sides. I wish every kid would know the love and support of a mom, dad, brother/sister, grandma, grandpa, aunts and uncles.
@@questioneverything1639 im sorry man.At least you stood up for you and your.It takes guts to do what you did.The way you treat your mom is the way youll treat your woman.I dont know if thats true or not but I believe so as your mom is always your first love.
My mother did the same. She was an outstanding lady. She never told bad things about my dad. He alone gave the bad impression he was a bad person. That is why I admire my mother, she was the father I did not have.
The fact that this was off script is true Kelly heartbreaking. But knowing the fact that uncle Phil jumped to hug him so damn fast and knowing that isn’t was the most genuine heartfelt moment these two actors had together is truly heart warming. I doubt anyone on set will ever forget this moment and I’m almost certain that it will live forever
Uncle Phil came off as strict, but he was the first to defend his family. Even with Will, he loved him and knew how hard he tried to be a good man and the issues he had growing up without a father. That's why he was so angry when Lou showed up after 14 years.
In my case it was my mother that didn't want me. My father didn't even know i existed till i was 3 or 4. I was adopted. It's not just fathers that walk out. Mothers can be just as evil. This is a very powerful scene. In my opinion it's Will Smith's best acting to date. It asks the same question that those of us have asked, when we were kicked to the curb... "Why?" He showed the frustration, confusion and hurt to a "T". Powerfully believable.
This reminds me of real dad and stepdad. My real dad left when I was two. He made me go 11 almost 12 years without a dad I've had a stepdad since I was 3 and my stepdad was like his uncle Phil he was the one who treated me like his own for 10 years he taught me everything my real dad should've taught me but my real dad was too scared to. I listen to this part every time I want to cry and it helps. It makes me realize how strong someone can be. It's taught me that I don't need my dad to be there.
Say what you may about Will Smith as a person, but this scene proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that as an actor, he is incomparable. The way his face slowly drops when he realizes what his dad's doing, the cold, emotionless way he says his name, the way he tries to act cool and aloof, the way his voice breaks when he shouts "To Hell with him" and the way he finally breaks down, it's acting at its finest.
I think will smith had a troubled relationship with his own bio father right? Some thing it messed will smith so badly mentally and emotionally. Some actors and actresses have really messed up parents.
RIP James Avery; one of the best TV dads ever! This scene between him and Ben Vereen shows tremendous talent between the two actors! It also showed the range that Will Smith had. We got to know him as being incredibly goofy on the show but this one scene showed that he could tap into becoming a convincingly emotionally vulnerable person.
Over 4 years later and this still hits home for me and meny others the dont need a "dad" in their life as long as you have yourself and someone to support you
That close up to a statue of a father holding is son was a great shot. That momant of silent, knowing will might not have the love and care he wanted from his biological father, but Unc was always there for him. He always had a dad.
I grew up without my father and everything that will said is so accurate. It hits me so hard. That line that I am going to be a better father and there is not a damn thing he can teach me about raising kids is the best line. When I had my kids I made sure they know I love them and I would be there for them every step of the way. My son gave me a Father’s Day card that literally brought me to tears. That proved to me that my way is working.
It's sad that this show isn't as popular as it once was. My mom showed me this show and it's honestly my favorite comedy show. It's amazing. Will Smith's acting in this scene alone was phenomenal.
I think those are the worst words a child can use why doesn't mommy or daddy love me that's why I think you should love your kids treasure every moment you have with them and always tell them you love them and always will be there for them no matter what..
Something that always gets me about this scene is that Will said James was the motivation behind his performance. “I wanted him to want me. To approve of me.” Not far from what the scene was really about ❤️

THAT'S RIGHT ✅️ 👏🏿 👌 💯
Aunt Vivian is best maternal figure.
Viv only had to give one line to say what we all thought of that sob
As an adopted child, I can definitely feel Will's pain. I was abandoned by my biological parent too. A child should not have to deal with the pain some birth parents cause. I know first hand how being abandoned feels. To anyone out there dealing with abandonment issues, I'm here for you.
Thanks it's a struggle at times my biological mother left the day before my high school graduation without a word I know others will say it's not the same cause she was there til I was done with high school, but it's a pain to have it and then get it ripped apart.
@@Ryltar45In my ways I think that’s even more painful… I’m so sorry that happened to you.
@facelessandnameless thanks I appreciate that
Fellas, let this be a lesson if you’re currently a father, soon to be a father, or plan on being one in the future. Don’t be anything like Lou (a terrible father) and be just like; or closely similar; Uncle Phil (a great father)
This is one of the most heart-breaking, darkest scene I've ever seen in my life.
*scenes
You're either 12 or haven't seen many scenes then kid 😂. I mean it's good but "darkest ever" come on bud.
@@vincehenriquez680 you know what i mean
@@jackspiracy3431 guess....I think you can probably admit now "darkest ever" was a bit of hyperbole there but all good man I'm picking up what you're laying out .
Lou doesn't derserve a son like Will. He just leaves at the last minute when Will is all packed and ready to go?, wtf is that?!.
Not always
Lou should be ashamed of himself for walking out on his own son- big props to Uncle Phil for stepping in and being Will's legal guardian and true patriarch to his nephew. As we all know, sometimes, uncles have to step in and be legal guardians to their nieces and nephews, whomever they are!!!
Cruel. Lou was clearly unfit for parenthood.
Considering Will only has one parent. His mom.
She is worst father in the world.
When I first found out that I was going to be a father I was scared to death. But I didn't run, I stayed and learned to be a parent and the best father I could be for my daughter. She is an adult now, almost 27 and a very hard-working, upstanding young lady.
Im glad you stayed. Mine didnt. I was 7
This episode was so serious and emotional. One of the rare episodes where you barely get a laugh and the audience and Will knows it. It’s a harsh lesson: a father who abandoned his son is no joke, it’s horrible. Then comes back, acts like he’s changed and ends up rebounding. That is called pathetic as well by the way!
You know what hurts a child the most regarding love especially into adulthood. Being rejected by the two people who were suppose to love u😢😢
0:16- You know you a struck a chord with a man when he's so angry, he doesn't even raise his voice or anything. He just has that tone and that look.
This remind me of my biological father too. Every time I watch this scene I break down in tears... I felt Will Smith on this scene.
Mood right here. I was 5 monthes premature in an incubator at the time and bio dad was all like "yeah, not my problem." He's back in contact now but he will never be a dad to me. He gave that up the moment he walked out 25+ years ago.
@@Phoebe5448 Im glad you're doing better now and show him that you'll be a better dad/mom then he ever could just like Will promised
Same but been 12 years without a single of contact with mine

Ben Vereen said in interviews that people came up to him and dogged him over this episode. He said people would just yell out to him, "How can you leave Will?!", "Why you leave Will?". I think he also said after he was done doing the scene, he cried backstage.
People are so damn stupid sometimes. Poor man. HE'S ACTING. IT'S ALL PRETEND.
@@darkstalkerkaathe4582 I know but he gave such a good performance that you believed him.
You know the actor did a good job when the audience looks at him/her and wants to tear them apart when seeing them in real life.
I believe it. The man who played Edith's attempted Rapist on All In The Family got punched in the face by crazed Fans while he was just innocently drinking a coffee in a Cafe! 😱😳🥶😵💫
He doesn’t deserve to call himself a father this was the saddest scene ever poor Will 🥺
Too sad
@@Unknown-bq9idJanet probably would have said something like,"You can go straight to Hell!" 🤣🤭🤔💡
3:12 “DA HELL WID HIM!!” That pain in Will’s voice kills me. It’s like you can hear and feel his heart being ripped from his chest in that moment.
Hearing Karen Parsons crying at the end in the background always gets me
Will had an amazing father "Phil"
One of the most heartbreaking moments in the show period
No disrespect intended to any of the other cast members, but James Avery was the best actor on that show.
Phil is the real will's dad !! Even if they were opposite phil cared about will as he did with all his children 😯
This has GOT to be the most powerful as well as heart wrenching episode of the entire Fresh Prince series.

Lou as Ego
Uncle Phil as Yondu

Yondu isn't exactly the best surrogate father figure, but I guess he was better than nothing.

My mom never talked shit about my dad she instead let me see for myself when I was older.
My mom was too weak to ever stand up to “my dad’s” bs. But I put him in his place. He’s a sorry excuse for a “human.”

@@krtlkid What did your mom want you to see about your dad?
My mother did the same. She was an outstanding lady. She never told bad things about my dad. He alone gave the bad impression he was a bad person. That is why I admire my mother, she was the father I did not have.
Everyone needs an Uncle Phil. RIP Mr. Avery
James Avery Was A Father Figure 2 Will Smith In The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air Series & I Really Like ThaT 2
And that big bear hug James give was not scripted. Sometimes those little off scripted moments really make scene
I still get teary eye at this scene cause of the pain i feel still hurts ... My dad never was there for me like he was for my older sister
In a flashback, Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv raised their kids in a cramped apartment. They didn't have much, but Phil kept them together.
True, what your said about mothers.
Uncle is a true father 😢❤ rip
This reminds me of real dad and stepdad. My real dad left when I was two. He made me go 11 almost 12 years without a dad I've had a stepdad since I was 3 and my stepdad was like his uncle Phil he was the one who treated me like his own for 10 years he taught me everything my real dad should've taught me but my real dad was too scared to. I listen to this part every time I want to cry and it helps. It makes me realize how strong someone can be. It's taught me that I don't need my dad to be there.
This still makes me cry, and I'm not a crying type. It's a beautiful, painful moment.
Will Smith absolutely nailed that scene!
Makes me cry every time. I lost my father really young but have found father figures along the way
I got really depressed a few yrs ago. Looking for a job. No one wanted me. When I said that, my Mama said 'I want you.' Best hug and kiss ever!! 💚 O+
Will should have slapped his dad like he did to Chris Rock. Maybe he would've smacked some sense into him 😂
OOh
Say what you may about Will Smith as a person, but this scene proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that as an actor, he is incomparable. The way his face slowly drops when he realizes what his dad's doing, the cold, emotionless way he says his name, the way he tries to act cool and aloof, the way his voice breaks when he shouts "To Hell with him" and the way he finally breaks down, it's acting at its finest.
I think will smith had a troubled relationship with his own bio father right? Some thing it messed will smith so badly mentally and emotionally. Some actors and actresses have really messed up parents.
As a person he's great, he just made one mistake.
This whole scene….wow…I don’t even know what to say except…powerful words and emotions
Takes the soul out of me everytime.
WILL IS NOT A COAT, WILL IS NOT A CLOSET.
BOWL! BOWL! WILL IS NOT A BOWL!
I always get emotional on that line when he said, how come he don't want me man.Good actor
Over 4 years later and this still hits home for me and meny others the dont need a "dad" in their life as long as you have yourself and someone to support you
Uncle Phil was more of a father to will than his real father that’s why I always respecting uncle Phil
It happened. No. It never just happens.
A powerful scene. Uncle Phil really showed how much he cared for Will.
this scene i feel took will smiths acting to another level
😢😢😢 Thank God for Uncle Phil.
And may that actor rest in peace with our father watching us above. 🙏❤
That close up to a statue of a father holding is son was a great shot. That momant of silent, knowing will might not have the love and care he wanted from his biological father, but Unc was always there for him. He always had a dad.
This makes me glad that my father stayed in my life until he passed away. He’s been there for all of us and I’m so lucky.
Love this scene..it shows how talented Will Smith really was. Breaks my heart every time I watch it.
River of tears in my eyes to see this episode of Fresh Prince. Getting so emotional.😭
“You too….Lou” gets me bawling every time😭😭😭😭
Greatest moment in any American family sitcom ever.
Lue proved how big a coward he really is.
Acting Or NotThis Is Real Life Situations For Some Dam I Am Glad I Was Watching This In The Kitchen These Onions I Am Chopping Are Very Strong!!!!!
It's sad that this show isn't as popular as it once was. My mom showed me this show and it's honestly my favorite comedy show. It's amazing. Will Smith's acting in this scene alone was phenomenal.
A beautiful and touching moment. Probably touched the hearts of many of us who grew up without a parent in our lives.
I think those are the worst words a child can use why doesn't mommy or daddy love me that's why I think you should love your kids treasure every moment you have with them and always tell them you love them and always will be there for them no matter what..
I can speak on a personal note
Facts. I can relate.
It's hard to keep the tears from flowing
Something that always gets me about this scene is that Will said James was the motivation behind his performance. “I wanted him to want me. To approve of me.” Not far from what the scene was really about ❤️
