It is wonderful to see Existentialism moved beyond the confines of a philosophical discipline or intellectual exercise so that it can be applied to everyday life. I particularly appreciate the concept of “reflection” as you use it here. Thank you.

I am surprised that this topic resulted in only a few comments. All my life of 78 years, I realized that my being/ lifestyle was a bit different than most people. Maybe it's my European upbringing, which I believe is a bit more down to earth than the country I have lived in the last 50 years. We live minutes away from the mountains with beautiful hiking trails, but very few people have ever been up there, even local folks who grew up here. I often feel as if we live on an island surrounded by people whose main goal in life is to bring in more money. I love your term of living truthful! Not necessarily being authentic. In today's world, it's not so easy to find people who think alike. I am grateful to have found you, dear Emmy. You bring so much inspiration into my life, and I am changing in little ways every day.

Ive been watching some of your videos lately and I find an authenticity to your advice ..
The older I get the more difficult change seems to be ..I pretty well have to have my back against the wall before I can even consider having to try another way ..but over the years I have changed dramatically.
But it has been a slow process..Always hoping to find the inspiration to speed it up a bit ..
I look forward to watching more of your videos

I like your point about being true to who you want to become. I'm not so sure about your point about being less authentic when responding to society or social influences. That would imply that people in more collectivist cultures, where they are much more socially responsive than our more self-absorbed, individualistic culture, are somehow less authentic. I see authenticity in terms of the values that I hold and if I am being true to those values, regardless of whether I have adapted their expression to the people I am with, then I feel I am being authentic.

Authenticity is not a choice. Values are by choice even when instilled. You either go by the values instilled upon you, or you let your mind and body be authentic. The moment you choose to go about a path that someone else believes in, you are no longer on the path of authenticity.
