Does the Ottomatic use a pump to move water to the spray head or is it like the Technivorm where heated water under pressure moves the water to the spray head?
pour over came first anyway... seems obvious when you think about it. Melitta Benz invents pourover coffee and later someone creates a machine that automates it. Then more "fancy" pour over makers come out and people make automatic machines for those.
I looked at the moccamaster, travelled to William Sonoma to take a look and feel. I really wanted to buy this cool machine with the copper coil heating element, but was very disappointed that the plastic of the basket was so flimsy.
Have had a moccamaster for a few years and have always despised the fact that it has no bloom function and the grounds are not evenly dispersed with the thin shower head.
Good product overview but I wish you didn’t use a coffee that you don’t seem to drink regularly. I’d like to know if/how this makes XYZ coffee taste better vs let’s say XYZ coffee in a French Press or a standard coffee machine, etc.
I love how cheerful Gail always is, and fully agree with other comments here that your editing has gone up a notch! Great video! :) Love the brewer as well, although it just seems a bit strange to me that chemex sells a brewer that doesn't include a carafe that's big enough. I wondered about that in their first version too. Not a big problem, but I think more people would buy it then.. just a thought
I loved this machine...until the tank started cracking. I tried to get in touch with Chemex, and because the 1-year warranty has just passed (I've had it for about 15 months) Chemex has offered me a 10% discount to buy another machine. I wouldn't recommend buying this unless you're willing to shell out $300 every other year. Chemex's customer service has been really lacking in this process. Unanswered emails, and when they do answer, it's just a scripted "it's past the warranty. We'll offer you 10% the purchase of a new one". I've also tried calling, and no one ever picks up the phone. Pretty disappointed in the quality of this machine for such a big price tag (and it ONLY brews coffee). Looks good, but does not hold up to the quality Chemex touts.
I like this machine enough, but my reservoir cracked within days of getting it. I emailed them about it and was told THAT part of the machine wasn't covered by warranty. Naturally. I still use it since the crack wasn't leaking, and it was expensive. Also, monsters like me will sometimes buy ground coffee, and if the grind is too fine, it will overflow. Overall, it's an ok machine but it can have its quirks. Have a good day, y'all!
@@klarinetta Yes, we have two Chemexes and really didn’t need another one either. I didn’t realize you posed this question six years ago, and probably found your answer back then! LOL!
Gail, love your videos, so so watchable. Great review, thanks. Not sure of the £300 price tag for it as our pour over variable temp kettle cost £50, but what they hey, shiny shiny :) We found pouring a chemex needs 2 hands (one under to support) if you have a lot of coffee in it.
How hot is the coffee? I always want to know that, by the way, with all these demos. How hot is it on the tongue because all these machines cool down the coffee in the brewing process.
The mocha master has hotter coffee in the pot when you pour it into your cup ...I have a mocha master and this chemex ottomatic ...the chemex is not worth the money overpriced in my opinion ...
Thanks for the nice video. Seems like a nice unit. However I'm kinda the bull in the China shop. Too much glass for me. I'm considering a Breville with a stainless steel carafe.
Ooh. Been wanting to buy more Chemex filters and those would save us some time since we always cut down the square filters. Should work as long as it doesn't stick up more than 3/4" on the 8 cup version.
I just googled the Bonavita BV1900TS and another video popped up showing how to use the Chemex with it. It's very brief but they show it with the paper filters folded over the edge of the 8 cup. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/CIoG1GKjtfQ/w-d-xo.html
That's the video that got me to use the two together. You weren't kidding about brief. Took me awhile of skimming to find that part :p The thing is that I am a photographer so I like products to look nice just in case I want to compose a shot :) Until I confirm the fit of the circle filters, the template I made to make my own is working fine.
Lol! Too funny! What were the odds that I would link that exact video? I understand about the photography. Chemex does make round filters as well. I remember choosing the square because they were unbleached whereas the round filters are white. I also have a Hario ceramic filter cone that uses a similar cone shaped filter. It too fits into the Chemex but it's a bit shorter and doesn't come all the way up to the rim of the carafe. They're white also but do not have any papery taste, very high quality filters. www.seattlecoffeegear.com/paper-misarashi-filter-for-hario-drippers
Seems nice but honestly buying the moccamaster and premium coffee bean I was not floored, yeah it tastes better for sure but I really expected a bigger difference.
Gail, I made coffee not realizing the pot beneath it was not empty. The area where we make coffee is dark and everything was set up for me. All I was supposed to do was measure and press brew. Oopsie! It was a mess. I had to clean it up. Fortunately, everything stayed within the tray. I highly recommend keeping your coffeemaker on a tray for just such an occasion. Now my daughter never sets everything up to make coffee unless the pot is empty.
I’ve never tasted coffee that is any good, when brewed at 8 minutes, it’s just way too over extracted. That’s the problem with Chemex, it takes too long.
I still prefer my old standard Chemex. This doesn't have the capability to do a classic pour over with the water pouring in a circular motion. Just sayin'. :)
I buy mine locally at Peet's Coffee & Tea, Williams Sonoma, Sur la Table, or World Market. Otherwise, you can buy them online from various places. I've never had a problem buying them locally...usually Peet's Coffee & Tea keeps the filters stocked in the store. A few times I've had to go to Sur la Table or Williams Sonoma to track down a box. I guess it depends where you live. I'm in San Diego, but the area I grew up in - in the midwest, do not have any of the stores listed above so if you live in an area like that and have a Chemex, plan ahead because you would have to order them online.
TimoNLgames try and find them online. You can order them but they ship some time in February or March. Or if they are available it's for about 3 times the msrp. Don't get me wrong I love my chemex, makes the best cup of coffee ever. But it's such a pain to get filters. The last 2 times I ordered from Seattle coffee gear they have been to the wrong address by FedEx. Really been miserable experience. In a first world kinda way.
Please see Seattle Coffee Gear's Facebook Page for a personal review of this product - with video - 6 months later. You won't be disappointed, both with the information, and about how the company responded to inquires... it's eye-opening. facebook.com/SeattleCoffeeGear/
First about your video. I didn't like your style of describing how machine is working when you could comment during a brewing process. It's like you are on a radio. Second about this type of coffee making. I never drank a filter coffee and I don't like the coffee without cream on a top. So this type of brewing is like making a tea which I consider inferior to espresso.
Željko Lucky this comment is hilarious lol but you’re not wrong. Drip or filter coffees are basically the diluted essence of the bean if your tasting palate is developed for espresso
Loving the extra product shots at different angles, very nice. Awesome video again Gail & team.
It's just a beautiful machine Gail.. and I love how SCG now presented the coffee brewing moment with cinematic super close video! 😍
Lots of coffee left high and dry, same with a Moccamaster. A stir about 30 seconds after the pre infusion would help a lot.
Nice review! Is the water tank and brewer parts that come in contact with the boiling water made of plastic or glass and stainless steel?
Does the Ottomatic use a pump to move water to the spray head or is it like the Technivorm where heated water under pressure moves the water to the spray head?
sooo.. its drip coffee now? glad to see we came full circle.
pour over came first anyway... seems obvious when you think about it. Melitta Benz invents pourover coffee and later someone creates a machine that automates it. Then more "fancy" pour over makers come out and people make automatic machines for those.
I love my chemex manual pourover but if I'm spending $350 I'm buying a Moccamaster and $50 worth of coffee.
mikefromtx I got a moccamaster and it’s amazing
I looked at the moccamaster, travelled to William Sonoma to take a look and feel. I really wanted to buy this cool machine with the copper coil heating element, but was very disappointed that the plastic of the basket was so flimsy.
Tried one, brought it back two days later

Maybe the screen needs decalcified now and then for folks with hard water.
Chad Ashton exactly what I was thinking considering my area typically has very hard water
What was the ratio of coffee to water?
By the time the water hits the coffee, what's its temperature?
I love how cheerful Gail always is, and fully agree with other comments here that your editing has gone up a notch! Great video! :)

I've owned my Ottomatic 2.0 for about three weeks now, and I love it, but if I encounter the same problems you have, I won't replace it either.
just got it. It looks like it does not spray all of holes. did I get defective one?
Love this channel!! Where has Gail been my whole life!! 👌🏻👌🏻
I like this machine enough, but my reservoir cracked within days of getting it. I emailed them about it and was told THAT part of the machine wasn't covered by warranty. Naturally. Out of curiosity, is that the Forte BG? If so, what setting did you use? Thanks!
What grind setting with a Rancilio would you recommend for this machine?

Is this machine available without the glass Chemex maker ?
It is from Chemex’s website.
@@kevinong1735 I know just asking because I have 2 of these around so it does not make sense to have to buy the 3rd one
@@klarinetta Yes, we have two Chemexes and really didn’t need another one either. I didn’t realize you posed this question six years ago, and probably found your answer back then! LOL!
Great Video :-). Is the heating element aluminium?
can i use it with a v60
It should not take 8 min. More like 5-6 min. The grinds are too fine. Medium-coarse is the way to go.

Nice review, Gail. Thinking about getting my mother-in-law one (so she can lose the Keurig!)
Thanks for the nice video. Seems like a nice unit. However I'm kinda the bull in the China shop. Too much glass for me. I'm considering a Breville with a stainless steel carafe.
I never want the hot plate on, ever.
Well was it hot?
Awesome editing on this, haven't seen this before on SCG videos. Cool product too.
Yay Gail!
I like the new brewing music and angels.
Ooh. Been wanting to buy more Chemex filters and those would save us some time since we always cut down the square filters. Should work as long as it doesn't stick up more than 3/4" on the 8 cup version.
I have a Chemex and the square filters too. Can't you just fold the corners down instead of cutting them all off?
Interesting. I will have to try that next time I use the 8 cup Chemex with Bonavita BV1900TS. That's the only time I feel the need to cut it.

2:58 "Brew clip" - Er? What?
V60 patch...
So it costs $350 to turn my $50 Chemex into a $30 Mr. Coffee? Sign me up!
but the second setting turns off the hot plate so you can make iced coffee (insert sarcastic tone)
Lol 😂

The more cups your brew, the longer it takes.
Chemex should take no longer than 4 minutes
And only 500 dollars in Canada - splendid!
Screen comes off so you can descale it, I reckon.
Awesome b roll!!!
i want to buy gail now instead of a coffe machine XD shes awesome

Unfortunately I must agree here once you have a palate developed to a high quality esspresso it's hard to drink filter coffee...it just is weak
Worst coffee deal yet! 'How to make a reasonably priced pour over set REALLY expensive!'.
I sense a bias in your videos
Alex Landry well they are given these items to review
Anon they sell all these items on their website
It's information for consumers. Don't like their views on products, don't watch. Since they sell the items, they will be a little biased.
RyNo I've bought items that they review. Their reviews are very positive and to me it seems that they skip over the cons. No product is perfect.
This machine is overpriced ...period...buy a mocha master and never regret it
8 min?! Why ruin coffe like that? Meh.
