    Kalmah!! the perpetually underrated kings of melodic death metal. pleease listen to some of their older stuff! It needs way more attention. Hades, The Blind Leader, Swamphell, They will return, heroes to us, the black waltz i could go on but they have so many iconic riffs/songs/solos. i cant help but feel their earlier material was a lot heavier and more gritty

  • @sinkler123
    @sinkler123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Your explanation about growling really hit the nail on the head in my case.
    That is exactly why I feel songs where the vocalist growl the ENTIRE song are kinda boring, due to the perma "drone" effect.
    I can enjoy growling as a tool to be used along with others to create variations in a vocal performance. But when singers overuse it its hard for me to enjoy. There is a reason no singer will belt or use head-voice for the entire song duration (and these techniques allow the use of notes and melody!). It gets boring... Same logic should apply to growling IMHO.

  • @puffythecampfireplayer6143
    @puffythecampfireplayer6143 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you like a thick rhythm and a combination of growl and clean powerful vocals...
    In Flames- The Quiet Place
    Soilwork- Overload
    Sybreed- Nomenklatura
    Blood Stain Child- Sirius VI
    Black Comedy- Favourite Hate Object
    Figure of Six- The Hanged Man

      @Paleoprimal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great breakdown -- from a HUGE Kalmah fan. They are considered "melodic death metal", and the more you listen, the easier it is to hear what the melody notes *would* be if the vocals were sung instead of growled. Also, for pure Kalmah symphonic awesomeness, listen to "Seventh Swamphony"

    If anyone's looking for some more out there metal, here's a few suggestions. 1: "Purgatorium" by Sigh. Japanese experimental black metal. Neoclassical influence in this track and a whole lot of wild energy. 2: "Wedding March for a Bullet" by Diablo Swing Orchestra. Avant-garde genre mashing metal with swing revival and opera influence, among others. Their whole discography is great, and it's hard to predict what you're in for with any given song. 3: "Gravedigger's Chant" by Zeal and Ardor. Combination of black metal and black spirituals. Both Z&A's albums are superb, and they definitely made waves. 4: "Waltz in E-major, Op. 15 "Moon Waltz"" by Cojum Dip. Sort of... jazz math metal with... circus influence? It's fun, silly, and, very odd while also going hard when it needs to. 5: "Wisdom Eyes" by Nine Treasures. Do you like The HU? Then you'll like Nine Treasures. Mongolian folk metal. 6: "Psamatäe" by Rïcïnn. Iffy whether this is metal, or any distinct genre at all, but it has the right feel and I'm the one making this list. Think Kate Bush plus Igorrr - she has, in fact, performed in several Igorrr tracks. 7: "POP3" by MASTER BOOT RECORD. Electronic metal done right. Shades of Doom soundtrack, or what might happen if the ghosts of a 90s heavy metal band posessed a floppy drive. 8: "1289, voyeur will shine, fight for distinction, evolution is mine." by Amogh Symphony. Avant-garde metal with Indian folk music, jazz, electronic, and a complete disinterest in consistency. If you like free jazz, this may be for you.

    Geebz, I've been on this music journey also. Genres I would have never found without your channel, and the inspiration to go find new stuff.
    I've been digging Sludge/Stoner Metal. Try, Elder - Dead roots stirring

    For more progressive aspect of melodic death I can suggest you to check out Be'Lakor "The Smoke Of Many Fires", "An Ember's Arc" and In Mourning "Black Storm", "A Vow To Conquer The Ocean".

    A lot of Finnish melodic death metal bands (and Swedish, too, for that matter) utilize keyboards. It's always a pretty cool touch I think.

    So cool to some Kalmah! I would recommend reacting to Death is the Beginning by Mors Principium Est - it might not be their most typical song, but it’s just beautiful. Keep up the great work!

    Really enjoy your videos, even if I'm not a fan of some of the songs lol. Would love to hear what you think of a song called Mana by a band called Equilibrium. It's instrumental and I think you will really enjoy it. Huge variety of instrumentation in that song, extremely melodic yet very heavy. In one word: epic

    Some excellent melodic death metal, heavy on the Gothenburg sound pioneered by At The Gates, In Flames, and Dark Tranquillity. There are a ton of good melodeath bands, such as the ones I mentioned, but you'd also do we'll to check out Amon Amarth and Be'lakor.

    aloha, wassail and skol!
    just wanted to say.....i like your laid back style of musical analyzation and your expertise breakdown of some of my favorite songs and artist in my most beloved genre of music.....Metal!!
    been a fan of kalmah since their first album Swamlord from 2000.... the 3 albums that followed that one are masterpieces of symphonic death metal as well,these dudes were always compared to another awesome finnish band Children of Bodom, which you should definitely dig into, they have a awesome keys player as well and lots of classical inspiration
    but on the other side of the world there is a little band from Oregon USA called Agalloch that i like to compare alot to opeth as far as top notch musicianship...i recommend a song from them called Falling Snow off the Ashes Against the Grain album released in 2006.... it's a progressive black metal tinged masterpiece! also off the same album there is a song called Not Unlike the Waves,i think you would highly appreciate both those songs, being the music enthusiast you are.

    Some of the best growling vocalists in the world can "modulate" their voice as you called i.e. moving between highs and lows. Check out Aaron Stainthorpe of My Dying Bride, Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth, and Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity. Those are just three of the best, but there are numerous examples as you expand your metal horizons!

    Hypocrisy's "Fire in the Sky" (uploaded by daeva) is a video eagerly waiting for you. The vocals go from deep growling to high-pitched shrieks in a second by the same guy, something you might be looking for. And let me add: he has multiple projects, besides being the "singe" he can play the bass, guitar, drums, he is a sound engineer and was the producer for multiple major releases... so he knows what he is doing. (And after seeing him live, I can safely say that his vocals are even better live)
    There is also the "PleasureOsculumPenetralia Medley", which is great as well, though quite different. Okay, I have to admit he does this quite often and effortlessly.
    But to be fair, there are many other bands and singers that pull off similar stuff. Cradle of Filth comes to mind as one of them.
    As it is almost 4 am, I give up thinking about other ones... and just thinking in general.
    Oh, and if you are looking for more Kalmah: Heroes to Us, the Groan of the Wind... and too many others to list

    If you want to hear some modulations in growlers voice go for Cradle of Filth. Dani's vocals are so unique, and of course it would be nice to hear you decompose their song or two. :)

    This has the the typical Melodic Death Metal vibe from the end 90's/ early 2000's, I hear some Dark Tranquility there, some In Flames and Children of Bodom.
    You should check those bands btw :)
    Or you can check: Dir En Grey - Vinushka as well, when you have time
