The Kobo Libra Color is certainly not a dedicated note taking device but I love the note taking capability when reading and annotating. Switching between a notebook and the book you’re reading is easy. Being able to annotate in the epub copy in color is great. I mostly use my Microsoft surface pen with an HB tip which gives my a far better writing experience.
It’s nice to see that your experience mirrors mine. Although Kobo is using the same building blocks as Kindle and Boox, thoughtful design and engineering results in a better user experience. The Libra Colour is one of my favourite purchases of the last couple of years. Even the capacitive stylus, while inferior to Wacom, is adequate for the sort of short annotations that I tend to make on a device of this type.
I hope you will review the Pocketbook color e-readers too :) I'd love to hear about them, and a comparison between them and these Kobo color e-readers, especially with the detailed approach you have with reviews ^-^
Thanks for the review. I always check yours first when I'm looking for an e-ink device (and I love my Supernote, a device I had never heard of before stumbling upon your videos a little while ago). Right now, I want to replace my old Kindle with a Kobo. I'm still not sure if I should get a color one or not.
I’ve had seven(!) Libra Colours over the past month. All of them had multiple pinholes in the screen and some had poor backlight uniformity. Our local reseller offered me the Sage for the price of the Libra Colour and it has been great. I don’t think colour e-ink displays are fully developed for the general public. The need to basically always have your backlight on when inside and the poorer contrast are not quite there when it comes to reading normal books. For comics, the colours look great, but the Clara and Libra are too small for that in my opinion.
Excellent review. Kobo is hands down what I use for reading all my books. I use something else for writing. I reckon the stylus is fine for annotating books, but that’s all. If they went with Wacom they’d steal the show by having arguably the best e-reader coupled with a good writing experience.
Are you sure the Clara does not have manual rotation in the pan/zoom menu (four arrows, leftmost button)? My Glo HD has it there, so this would be a significant regression if they removed it.
Great video, especially for the comparison between Sage and the new kleido device. This only confirms my view that the 300 b/w ppi on Kleido screen is not really like 300 ppi on Carta screen, in fact I feel like it feels (looks) worse than 227 ppi Carta screen.
Excellent video. I totally agree regarding the notebook. One problem I am noticing is when I read an American comic in landscape the upper panels are cut off, and unlike when you had the magazine article it won’t move up using the buttons or allow me to scroll. If there is something I am missing please let me know. And personally I don’t find the screen too dark. I recently finally tested a Boox Go 7 Color and found that screen way darker. Anyway thank you for the great review!
It’s a shame they sent you the origami case for the Libra Colour. The pen storage in the notebook case, is the most elegant solution I’ve seen to date.
Another great video - thanks! I appreciated the comment about getting a black device. I had a white Libra 2 but now have a black Colour and it seems like the screen is brighter on the Colour due to the contrast. I tried both Clara and Libra and kept the Libra (gotta have my page turn buttons!) But am still holding out hope for an updated color Sage!
Will you review the new Clara BW with the Carta 1300 screen? I am very curious to see a side-by-side screen comparison between the Clara 2e, new Clara BW, and Clara colour.
When you demo the writing (37min) did you have the front light on? Is it darker than the Kindle 6" (~2011)? You mentioned that you needed the frontlight indoors - do you still need a frontlight where for a normal book you wouldn't? Thank you for making these detailed reviews - they are helping me a lot in my search for an e-reader. I wish your videos came up higher in my searches, but now I have subscribed to your channel.
No, because it doesn't have a Wacom layer. So only active pens of a specific standard will work, for example, Microsoft Surface pen is something users report working well with it.
@MyDeepGuide thank you. I got the Note Air 3C recently and love it for note taking and productivity but I can't figure out how to send kobo/libby/kindle books to neo reader so I can write notes. Would love an in depth tutorial on boox ereader functionality.
@@deetee19You can find several video’s on how to use Calibre to remove DRM and convert ebooks to the chosen format if you want to do that or buy ebooks without DRM or with ‘social DRM’.You can sent that kind of ebooks to you note air without hassle and open them in Neo Reader.
The Libra looks better to me (too bad they didn't make the frame symetrical, like the Clara). Still, $80 is $80 and, coming from a Kindle Basic, the Clara seems acceptable.
The Clara will have slightly better contrast due to the smaller screen. Its exactly the same if you compare say a 32" tv to a 42". The 32" will appear sharper and clearer, as well as brighter and the image is more compact. Whereas the 42" duller, but image enlarged but detail easier to see
Thank you a lot for your work. This is an excellent review. I've noticed that the caption at th-cam.com/video/ZbRZjt3f1FI/w-d-xo.html shows front-light set to 100% when it should be 50% and then similar situation later where it should be 0%.
This is the most comprehensive I have seen on both devices, thank you.
Been searching for anything more than a preview.

I've been waiting for your review of the new Kobos! Thank you so much for going into such details. Always appreciate your thoroughnes!

I just got my Kobo Libra Color and I love it! I love that you can connect it to libby and Dropbox too
I know the Clara BW is almost identical to the Clara 2E but I would have loved to see it mentioned (or quickly touched on) in this video!

Vraagje, via welke winkel was dit? Want dan kijk ik in eerste instantie bij een andere winkel🙈
Hopelijk gaat het dan beter.

You can rotate images on the Clara, but have to manually set it, which is not really a big deal
Where can I find this setting?

So Clara color can be use in the night? It has front light?

Thanks for the review! I guess the only way to read Kobo Clara in the landscape mode is to use KOReader. Then PDFs will be a bit more useable.
Will you review the new Clara BW with the Carta 1300 screen? I am very curious to see a side-by-side screen comparison between the Clara 2e, new Clara BW, and Clara colour.
After scrolling 100 videos found yours. Why it did not cone up in top i dont know. I have subscribed too....
Probably because I refuse to use clickbait related stuff. Glad you found the channel, and welcome to the community :)

There is a landscape mode on de clara. Its the button with the arrows, right?
Not in PDF files.
Can you use the boox stylus on the kobo libra 2?
No, because it doesn't have a Wacom layer. So only active pens of a specific standard will work, for example, Microsoft Surface pen is something users report working well with it.

Does the color have any ghosting like the boox readers
Hello friend. Are any of the new similarly sized non-Kobo readers a good alternative to the Sage (due to battery issues on the latter)?
The libra is so bulky and older style look compared to other 7" readers. I perfer the Clara, but more comfy to hold and more portable
The Libra looks better to me (too bad they didn't make the frame symetrical, like the Clara). Still, $80 is $80 and, coming from a Kindle Basic, the Clara seems acceptable.
3:25 Chunky? No. Anything thinner than this wouldn't be comfortable to hold (in my opinion, of course).

Ah, I must have permutated them, but unfortunately there's no way to fix it now, as TH-cam doesn't allow replacing videos for us mortals
Its 2024, The Kobo is PROUD of its thickness. How dare you try and shame this strong independent ereader!
