Programme 1 [6/5/84] Cilla Black stars in the first of six programmes in a brand new family entertainment series in which the unexpected is always just around the corner. You’ll be surprised at who Cilla meets and what she finds; and her right-hand man, Christopher Biggins, has some strange encounters of the unpredictable kind, too. Plus a chance for viewers at home to join the studio audience in The Phone Game.

I was only thinking about Christopher Biggins on Surprise Surprise this morning when he was on the radio. It seems Cilla needed her mates for the first series and this seems rather chaotic at times. She certainly must have gone to an LWT presenters school to improve her presenting skills after this! She really got it right from Series 2 onwards and she became a TV star and rightly so. Easier simpler times. Many thanks for uploading I’ve never seen this before.

Cilla was actually very experienced in presenting tv shows , but had a break from the late seventies. She had her own evening variety/comedy show on BBC1. Its true to say though, that she stills operates largely in the same 60s70s presenting style in this first episode. I suspect the LWT team just tweaked it as they got feedback and critics reviews in the papers etc.

Christopher Biggins wasn't actually a friend until they met working on this first series of Surprise Surprise.

They always had another presenter on surprise surprise. Bob Carolgees took over from Biggins, and Gordon Byrnes also presented searchline for a few seasons

Always thought as the series went on that Cilla and Biggins made a great pairing on the show - I remember Cilla saying that even THEY were confused by the phone numbers game 😆 Me and the family used to sit and play along though!

I wonder what golf club it was that allowed it's fairways to be dug up to have a visual effects team to put charges in them for the exploding golf balls . It may have only been a small hole, but it can still damage a fairway
