At the end of the day, the relationship between sheer and moments is an integral so what he does here to skip doing the cut and check method of moment drawing is correct. The integral of a flat line is a triangle as the area increases linearly with distance. The integral of a slope is a curve etc. People should learn both methods as they are equally applicable.

Focusing on reinforced concrete (have been using programs that do this for me and other engineers, but know I will need to do these diagrams myself) and am absolutely loving this. Bam! Wooop! It really helps when lecturers state the relationships, how to set up the solution diagram/s for the interaction of those relationships and then how to solve the problem/question. I’ll be adopting the three levelled diagram when calculating the shear-bending diagram. Thanks Jeff.
