Route Setting With The Chossiest Holds We Can Find

  • In today's episode me and Nikken have a route setting stand off. We both pick out really chossy holds for the other person, and their job is to try and set something great with it. To decide which climb is the best we bring in Anton to be our judge.

    I thought chossy was a term used to describe outdoor rock that is crumbly and breaks apart easily. Are people using it to describe bad/greasy indoor holds now? Asking for a friend. :)

  • @Michael_Schmatzberger

    What are your thoughts on people starting to grade the Big Island 8b+ ? Does that demotivate you or doesn't it matter since you just see the route as your personal next step? I'm always kind of sensitive when it comes to my max-grade or the next grade above it.

    • @EmilAbrahamsson
      @EmilAbrahamsson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not demotivated by it at all!
      Honestly most boulders that are as famous as Big island are bound to go down in grade as more people climb it. If an 8C "suits you" it can feel much easier than an 8A that doesn't. Grades are so incredibly subjective so I think if I let it get to me I probably wouldn't enjoy pushing my grades anymore. I see it as a next step in my progression as a climber, 8C or not :-)

    There are at least two broad categories of spinach: flat-leaf and savoy, which is a more crinkly shape. Now some people believe that semi-savoy is also a category of spinach. Savoy spinach tends to yield the best, semi-savoy is notable for being particularly resistant and versatile, and flat-leaf, being the easiest to rinse, tends to be used in bulk applications such as canning and freezing. Within those three categories are a number of cultivars, some of the most popular being Indian summer, catalina, bloomsdale, space, and red carnival/red kitten. Beyond that there are a few cultivars of spinach that don't quite fit any of these mold, including New Zealand and Malabar. Based on the expertise I've gained over the last six minutes, I've seen at least 27 different cultivars of spinach, which doesn't include an unquantifiable number of heirloom cultivars that small farmers or experienced home gardeners may have. Please show this to Nikken.

    Really liked this one, cool concept! I'm a fan of old gyms and old holds, they both need more love. There's so much emphasis these days on modern holds and modern setting, I think it would be super awesome to see some more videos like this with old classic holds and setting fire problems with them. Throw it back, respect!

    • @EmilAbrahamsson
      @EmilAbrahamsson  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha well in the more common definition of "choss" you're right. We've been using "choss" as a term for shitty holds in Sweden since I started climbing, and within our circuits its even spread to being used towards anything. "What a chossy car" and stuff like that. The word is being used to describe something that's crappy.
      Clearly it isn't quite as widespread of a term as we seem to think it is :P
