Hi Noz! How come you surf such short boards? I see you're the same height as me but I'm skinnier (61kg) and my standard shortboard here in Portugal is 5'10 and I love riding it. Fyi I used to surf 5'6-5'8 in beach breaks too but now that I improved my turns, as soon as the waves get good I prefer a board the same height as me. Is this the case for you too? I though of maybe going back to a shorter board once I start trying more straighties and reverses but not an urgency.. Thank you!
Hey Papi! Thanks for tuning into the premiere last night bro. I try to reply to YT comments in batches (2x a week). So I apologise for the delay 🙏🏽 Dude, great question! Once I started working with my sponsor (at the time) Vibe… I saw a video of me on my old 5’9 from the beach and it looked like a gun! So I started trying smaller boards with the same volume as a 5’9, 5’10 (so just thicker and wider to make up for the lost volume in length). And they just felt so much nicer under my feet. The waves are surf are typically 1-3ft so these grovel boards are designed to excel in these conditions! So worked perfectly for me. But I am trying to avoid 5’6s now and only ride 5’7 and above cause 5’6 is too stubby I’ve realised. And yeah like you said, bigger boards are better for turns, shorter boards are better for airs so it’s just personal preference. I want the best of both worlds so I’m trying out 5’7s and 5’8s again It’s an endless journey with boards bro! At the end of the day, VOLUME is king. Doesn’t really matter the length (to an extent) just need the right volume 💎

What you said about surfing 1-3ft is key and it makes sense why you'd surf shorter boards. Similarly to you, I used to surf a chilli churro 5'6 from Lee Wilson actually (bought in Bali) at a mediocre beachbreak in Spain. Now that I live in Portugal I experimented with the same volume but with a slightly narrower and thinner 5'10 and I'm progressing much faster because I can hold my turns longer and really dig the rail. Waves in Portugal are stronger and bigger than what I used to surf too... Lastly, given then progress I'd love to start trying air revs. I’ve landed multiple straighties but not super high ones so your surfing is inspiring me to trying a shorter board for the days I want to try doing airs. I'll make sure to rewatch your tutorials, I’m aware you have a few haha. Thank you man, keep in touch!

So riding a board smaller in length just looks and feels better under my feet. But they have the same volume as a 5’9/5’10 boards I just put all that volume in the width and thickness of the board. And I surf small waves so having a bit wider and thicker of a board helps in those types of waves 🤙🏽⚡️

Hey legend! The best thing I recommend is to go on the internet and search “surfboard volume calculator”. I personally think JS Industries has the best one on their website. Then you’ll just put your height, weight, ability and stuff in, then it recommends the best length, volume and overall board dimensions for you. Everyone rides/needs a different sized board, so this is the best way to know what you should be on 🤙🏽
