    I think I'll do whatever is best for my needs at the moment. However, after repatriating I'll probably establish a Ghanaian bank.
    I purchased me and my mom's airfare for April!!!!
    I'm beyond excited to be visiting Ghana for the first time!!!
    Thank you both so much for the insightful information you provide!

    Dear Tony, credit cards DO have pin numbers for ATM's to get a cash advance (LOL). Yes, I'd open a bank account in Ghana if I was a permanent resident and keep no more than $500 in it, plus keep my home country bank accounts as I would be visiting family/friends from time to time. These days, you can go online to your credit card company and record travel dates and destinations. You can also lock and unlock the card at will via the bank's app to stop unauthorized charges if your card is lost or stolen.

    • @ExpatLifeGhana
      @ExpatLifeGhana  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Bumblebee - Using a pin when using your credit card is like taking a cash withdrawal that you pay a fee for. My business credit cards don't have pin numbers associated with them for this reason. My personal credit cards don't have a pin because I guess I never saw a need to set it up. I can still lock and unlock the cards through my app on the phone. I can "momo" if cards aren't accepted and thanks for the comment 😊!

    Having used the mobile money solution, it is a really convenient solution but there are a few downsides to be aware of. I used MTM as my local mobile money, but just because you have the SIM doesn’t automatically grant you the mobile money facility. That costs 10ghc extra which is no problem but i had trouble getting the roadside mtn vendor to add the MM facility to my SIM even when using my passport as identification, (I was only visiting for 3 weeks). The situation was only resolved when a local spoke to the vendor on my behalf.
    There are also limits for the amount of transactions that can pass through the MM account in one month (at least MTN enforce this , and it seems to vary from month to month) . Similarly the transfer companies (world remit, transferwise and others) all impose different rules for max size of transfer and frequency of transfer, beware. These companies all have their pros and cons but basically the money is transferred into your local MM wallet within 10 mins (you get a text/email confirmation) except when it isnt! - ive experienced delays of up to 3 hours using WR on rare occasions, which can be a traumatic wait. A transfer can be held up by your sending bank, by the transfer company, or by the local MM company. Its rare but ive had hold ups by all three. The final issue, is internet access. Its frequently crap basically, no signal means no transfer, you have to wait for the local connection to return etc

      @@305jett Yes you can. Services like World remit, remitly, Wave helps you send money into your bank account in ghana, or Mobile Money to your phone in ghana. Then withdraw to your transactions. The banks also have visa, Mastercard etc services and you do online banking pay your bills online. Basically everything you do in the US or any part of the World you can also do in ghana. #globalvillage

    Some banks like Ecobank is all over west Africa and they also offer credit cards due to the type of account you have with them. Credit cards are not offered or accepted much in most places because of security reasons and also some card companies take long to authorise the payment to the recipient. Also Ghana doesn't practice the credit system so most banks do not offer credit cards. Foreign credit cards do work here but you may incur some extra charges for use especially when you take cash from the cash machine.

      @@ExpatLifeGhana especially American Express credit card is highly not accepted by most other places and the reason they give is that they like disputing bills and sometimes take to long to authorise or issue the payment to the shop or service provider who was paid with that. They also ask for pins on the credit card because its now a security mode especially when abroad to make sure its you and to make you aware in the exchange rate cost in that local currency. A lot of places do accept Visa, MasterCard and a host of others as long as its a chip and pin and whether its a credit card or debit card. This is because signature can be forged by people and that's why chip and pin is widely used. The non chip cards can be used on most ATMs or cashpoint as some call it to withdraw cash and check balance and credits as long as their card is connected to any of the international card services with the symbol on the back like LINK, VISA, MasterCard, Switch, Cirrus the list goes on you would be fine. And always try to use ATMs of major and foreign banks that that provide these services such as Barclays bank, Standard Chartered bank (aka stanchart bank), ECOBANK, Ghana Commercial Bank and more. But please also inform your bank of the country you are going or the countries you with be and the time period you would be there before they block your cards and refuse payments or decline transactions. Also please be aware that there may be fees for usage abroad and also the exchange rate your bank uses might be lower. So the best way is to use one of the banks that do not chat you for card usage abroad and maybe has better exchange rates or you can use one of the cost effective money transfers online to send money to yourself via mobile money or to collect at a branch or to a local Ghanaian bank account if you have one.

    In Canada, credit cards do have PIN numbers. But if it's a touch card, you hardly ever use it. We hardly ever sign paper. That's an older system.

    • @ExpatLifeGhana
      @ExpatLifeGhana  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tasha M -A good part of our credit cards are business cards that don't have pin numbers attached to them because using the pin would be like taking out a loan and paying a interest rate on it. Cards are different because of the benefits they do or don't offer and thanks for the comment 😊!
