  • Today I’m talking about what people called “Amazon Paper” with respect to coloring books. I’ll explain what exactly Amazon paper is, why there are misconceptions about it, and how to get the most out of it.
    The page I am coloring is from my book Lighthearted Mandalas Volume2. All of my books are available on Amazon and can be found here:

    This is the issue. There ARE different types of not only paper but print quality used in Amazon printed books. Not only are there regional variations (a UK book will be different from a US for example) but even within the US alone I've identified multiple different papers/printing processes in my own personal purchases. A few examples (these are not the only authors by far but just to illustrate the differences): At the top we have the Morgan O'Brian (Matchstick Mouse) books.. this is great paper and takes any pencil/pen I've tried on it nicely. It's ink is crisp, even, and black, paper is white with an obvious higher quality press/fiber, and has nice tooth. Even handles a bit of watercolor. Very few books in this category that I've found. Then a middle example is Tatiana Bogema Stolova (Nice Little Town).. it's the ink is less crisp but still relatively even, paper is a bit softer in finish, not quite as white, and smoother... pencils are hit or miss depending on formula and pens may bleed, not a fan of moisture. Another middle example is Kameliya Angelkova (Miniatures/Fairy Houses/Mandalas series)... not as nice as the O'Brian books but different than the Stolova books.. less tooth but takes markers well with a little bit of bleed but not much, and the print is a bit more crisp, a thinner but slightly harder pressed paper. Then one of the worst Coco Wyo (tons of titles)... the ink is washed out and uneven sometimes with obvious streaks, paper is extremely soft and mushy, noticeably grey in tone, almost fuzzy surface...this garbage reminds of the throwaway sheets of recycled paper we used in elementary school for handwriting practice... nothing goes down well on it, it falls apart at the thought of moisture, and pens bleed like crazy.. it's like trying to use a felt tip on a paper napkin. They don't even scan well because of the grey tone and poor print quality. There are a LOT of books in that last category. Every one of them says "independently published".. and as far as I can tell there is NO way to determine what you are going to get when you place that order. There are also often differences from one book to the next from the same author.. and collections with a high page count consistently are lower quality. I've gotten halfway decent at looking at customer review images to determine what is just flat out awful (the ink defects are a dead giveaway).. but I've also wasted a lot of money on books I really don't enjoy working with and these days I avoid Amazon printed books unless they have enough reviews out there to determine they are one of the better quality options. I feel bad for the artists, and there are a few I support with Etsy downloads when they are offered as an alternative. I know I've avoided books that I would probably enjoy out of fear.. and feel like we need some serious transparency from Amazon, not only for the consumers benefit but the artists. You stated it's not fair that books get bad reviews due to paper.. but from the colorists standpoint it totally is... paper is everything in this medium and will make or break the artistic experience. I will 100% pay more for better paper, and I know I'm not alone.

      OMGoodness thank you soooooo very much for all of your thoughts here. I personally learned so much, and am grateful for your comment so others can learn as well. I didn't realize that there are so many variations of the Amazon paper. As I stated, artists just have two choices BUT leave it to Amazon to take those choices and make them so varied and all at their own discretion. I personally haven't noticed the variation in the Amazon KDP coloring books that I've purchased, but you have so much more exposure to a much wider array of books than I have, I think. This is why your experience here is something I'm very grateful for. And you're right - transparency from Amazon on which paper you're getting exactly would be ideal. This really has given me a lot of insight on why people avoid the Amazon paper books from independent artists - the context you've shared is invaluable to me. As a consumer, I, too, am always willing to pay more for the nice quality paper. Thank you again, for chiming in here. I *truly* appreciate you so much! With warm regards - Kim 💖

      @@snickerdoodlingllc I actually grabbed a few books out of my bookshelf and examined them more closely. I don't have any of the really awful ones (I gave those away to coworkers kids) but I compared a Matchstick, Nice Little Town 4, and Forest Song (RJ Hampson) side by side. All are printed out of Coppell TX, in either 2022 or 2023. All are different. Matchstick has perfect print, black and crisp.. a very even tooth, structured pattern of tiny round bumps. Paper isn't super heavy but you can't see through it unless you hold it up to the light. Forest Song has good print, slightly less black but no errors... but a completely different tooth (more organic, kind of like little waves) and it's noticeably thinner.. you can see the print easily from the other side. NLT is again completely different, much smoother (almost no tooth, soft pressed, but thicker than Forest Song) than either of the others, noticeable issues with print (vertical lines through the black although not a lot of them and they are not completely white), and the print is not solid, like I had printed it on "draft" setting on my printer. I thought perhaps I could isolate a difference.. printing location, year, etc but no. The only think I can point to with the Matchsticks is size, they are a smaller format book so perhaps they use different paper for smaller books? It's hard to say 100% without touching them but I think your books fall into that "middle" category with Forest Song and NLT based off your video. I can work with this level of quality. I have no idea why some of the others I gave away are so very bad... I truly thought there was a "budget" print option they were choosing. My best guess for these is that Amazon buys paper in bulk from various sources, whatever is cheap, and just doesn't care about being consistent or performance? The weird thing is I have Matchsticks from three different years so they should be different if that was true, and they aren't.. they all look like they were printed out of the same ream. The same is true for my Kameliya Angelkova books, I have six of them and they are all the same paper, but this paper is slightly different from the others I mentioned above. I have no explanation for the printing variance (color, crispness, lines) other than the effect of the paper on the process. Oh, one other thing I have notices is the print on my Matchsticks rubs off easily under pressure, especially with a blending pencil.. where my NLT doesn't (I tend to like Prismas blended out on both of these). It's all so weird lol.

      @@waymire01 This is fascinating to me! I literally just bought the RJ Hampson book and now I need to check it. Ack! LOL I do own one Coco Wyo book (Beauties in Fairyland) and do think that paper feels weird to me. Also bought a book by Sasha Effgen (Beautiful Worlds of Ambiflage). The thing they both have in common is that both sides of the page have been printed on. Could this be a factor maybe or is my little Kim brain just drawing empty conclusions? Ha! And if you think about Amazon...originally KDP was for authors to self-publish a traditional paperback book, for instance. So I wonder if they are still using that same style printing press technology and paper? All of this is just me surmising on a lazy Sunday - I have zero facts to back that up! LOL But now you have me committed to go through ALL of my KDP books 🤣 I did notice when I colored in the Coco Wyo book with my Polychromos that I had a difficult time getting a smooth burnish on the page (you can see the fairy - just posted within the last month or so - on my IG page: @kimlikes2color). But there's still a lot of white texture poking through the color. And I gave up trying to get that nice look I normally get. Paper be darned! I have truly enjoyed the conversation with you & hope you'll stick around for more. I don't pretend to be an expert at anything but am just another person who loves to color! I hope you have a great evening, my friend! 💖

      @@waymire01 I completely agree with everything you've said here and in your previous comment. I get so disappointed with the Amazon paper (my books also come printed in Coppell, TX) because it makes coloring a chore, rather than a joy. I have also stopped buying books that I am not 100% sold on for this reason. The only books that I "endure" the Amazon paper for these days are the RJ Hampson books. The best I have come up with is to get a few different sets of oil and wax pencils and I find the one that works best on each specific book that I get, and then try to make do, but it's not as fun when coloring is hard to do, and your hands get so tired, because of the paper.

    Finally an effective video on how Amazon paper reacts to different coloring methods, your video is invaluable! As a future first-time KDP publisher my book is not strictly a coloring book per se but will have coloring page elements to it. Seeing the marker bleed through and closeups of your pencil work and how the paper reacts in each circumstance is exactly what my research needed to see. I think the public expects way too much bang for their buck, clearly this isn't expensive art gallery paper but you proved it is workable. Thank you for the effort Kim, you are appreciated.

      Way too much bang? There are so many colouring books out there with excellent paper for not even double the price of an Amazon printed book, and the prices keep going up.... I'm not expecting the same quality, but more than the current crappy paper. And yes, from time to time you get paper that is ok, if only they all were at least that quality.

      @@DieterPrivate I can agree with you Dieter, the paper should be much better given what we pay for these books. But I actually expected the paper to be of even lower quality, almost as bad those old lined notebooks we had as schoolkids with the rough texture and excessive marker bleed. I'm just thankful Amazon opens up any kind of printing for independent publishers, glass half full I say.

Those that say they won't buy the books off Amazon if they are printed on their paper, they are missing out on some good books. Like it has been said they can always print it on thicker paper anyway if they want to.
      My favourite books are from Ameliya Angelkova, Lulu Mayo, Jade Summer, Colouring Cafe, any other cutie ones. My favourite pencils are Arrtx, Arteza tĥe expert normal pencils, Brutfuner squares, Faber Castell black editions. I don't have the èxpensive ones like Polychromo's, Caran D'ache, Holburns, Prismacolours, & Derwent other than havìng the Chromaflow ones.

    If I want a different paper I can cut the drawing from the book that has what I want to color. I will put it in my printer and transfer the image to whatever type of paper that I desire to color on. All alcohol markers will bleed through a paper and most cardstocks. But I just put a piece of paper under the page I am coloring. It protects the next page but not a page directly behind that image. It will be lost. Hi Kim, I am following up with you regarding your suggestion of using hair spray on your printed images before coloring with alcohol markers to prevent the inkjet printer ink from smearing...I tried several types of cardstock and this worked great as long as I didn't add any layers. For example the face...putting down one layer did not smear but when I added the shading (for the shadow) the ink from the mouth, eyes, and nose the ink smeared. I tried using the greyscale pages to enhance the shadows. it is not perfect but I am not an artist so I am fine with the results! I think the mandala books would be ok, but greyscale or images with lots of details just always look horrible from this printing location.

    I too have found that my Castle Arts, Brutfuner, Star Joy and other work extremely well on the Amazon paper. In fact, all of my pencils work well on paper with a little bit a tooth. My trouble as a pencil-only colorer, I have trouble finding pencils that work well on the slick papers like Kerby Rosanes and Johanna Basford. Maybe those books are more for marker colorists?

    • @snickerdoodlingllc
      @snickerdoodlingllc  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Deana! The smoother paper can be trickier because of the lack of tooth. While the Kerby and Johanna paper is extremely nice for markers, the downside is that the markers do bleed through, so you aren't able to color on the back side of that page (since these books have 2-sided drawing pages).
      For the pencils....I'm thinking you won't need to use as many layers for sure on this slicker paper, but for me - I find I don't have to work so hard to get the blending and color I want because I'm not fighting the texture of the paper. I've not colored with any of the pencils you've mentioned (but have heard soooo many great things about these brands!), but maybe others here can chime in? Is the difficulty you're experiencing in the blending of the pencils? If so, have you tried using mineral spirits or a blender pencil maybe? I'm so glad you chimed in here with your thoughts. But LMK how I can help here! I hope you have a wonderful day! 💖

      @@deanamontgomery7410 I've not used the Arrtx but am an avid Prismacolor gal. I'm not able to attach a picture here, but if you go to my IG account (@kimlikes2color) you'll see a recent picture I colored from Kerby's Alien Worlds book using Primas. Okay, now I am SUPER curious. Because when I get Amazon printed books, they all say Las Vegas. And just listening to the paper as you're manipulating it, it sounds WAY heavier than what comes in any Amazon printed book I've ever gotten. The paper from the Las Vegas press is THIN, you can literally see through it and read printing from the opposite side (not to mention multiple printing flaws in every book). Maybe Amazon prints the books locally, and not all their presses are equal?

    • @snickerdoodlingllc
      @snickerdoodlingllc  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! Thank you SO much for your comment and feedback. From what I have been able to gather, Amazon will usually print your book from the facility that is closest to you. From some of the comments below, that doesn't always seem to be the case. I tried to Google a list of their facilities in the US, but that seems to be something they don't share with the public. I thought I had read online that they also might farm out the printing in some cases to a 3rd party, but am not sure if that comment was true or super old. I CAN tell you from the comments on this video, that the paper is DEFinitely different from one facility to the next. That's weird as I would think it might be cheaper for them to supply the same paper all over, but maybe it's cheaper to source the paper closest to the facility. Either way - it's definitely inconsistent not only from one facility to the next but even from one book to the next. This doesn't help the bad rap this paper has one bit. The more y'all respond to this video, the more I learn about how this paper truly is ALL over the place. I wish I had a better answer for you, Melehu. But it's people like you providing feedback that are helping to fill in the picture here for all of us. I truly appreciate you & hope you'll stick around the channel. Have a fantastic day!! 💖

      Hi, Dea! I saw you reply & just did a little research for you. I've seen quite a few comments where people are saying that after printing their page with their inkjet, they will spray a very light single coat of hairspray on the page to "seal" the ink. I wonder if that might help? Also - (if you haven't already) check your printer settings to update for the heavier paper you're using. But I'm not sure if that would really make a difference of not. A more extreme solution would be to print the page on normal copy paper & then take it somewhere to have it copied on nicer paper. But again, that feels extreme and expensive to me (gah!) Let me know if the hairspray trick works. I've not tried it myself but wonder if that can solve the problem for you. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!!! 💖

      I was very excited to see this video because I’m still fairly new to coloring and just got my 1st Amazon paper coloring book and almost cried at how horrible the experience has been. Had this been my first experience in adult coloring, sadly I would not have continued. I’m very lucky to be blessed with a healthy budget and within reason have slowly built a wonderful collection of pens and pencils. My first book purchase did cause me a moment of fear and anxiety, so much for lowering my stress 🤣🤣 but is how I found this community on YT. I don’t want to budget for a printer or find space etc to be printing and binding these books the way I would like them and is why I would hope to buy them out in the marketplace but I guess times are changing and as they say, ‘if you want it done right then you have to do it yourself.’ My current and new in 2021 printer will not take card stock because that would have been to easy, however I did find by accident that printing on grayscale did lay down a perfect amount of ink for the half of the paper it did print on, but it did not lift off or smudge. Maybe for those who’s printer will grab and hold on to the card stock this might work? Sorry so long but in the end I wish Amazon could give options in printing choices, this way the Artists work can be enjoyed at all levels and budgets.

    This was helpful. Do you know of a source for tan tone paper to scan or download on

      Hi, Debby! I asked my Prismacolor expert friend for her opinion on this one, as she scans/prints a TON of pages at her home (I normally print in the office on white cardstock).
      She recommends the Astrobright Colored Cardstock which she said is readily available at Walmart (but I'm not sure where you're located?) It's a 65lb paper and she said is has a little texture but not a lot. Also said it works beautifully with colored pencils.
      I couldn't find a tan - but see if you like this cream color maybe? I'm glad to keep looking. Let me know what you think! And thank you for stopping by and watching, Debby! 💖💖💖 I hope this works for you!

      Sophia thank you SO much for this great question! I just made a quick video to show you how (it's to hard to explain in a text here). Hopefully this will take the mystery out of this for you. Give me about an hour to upload it. SO grateful for you asking this so I can share with you and others. Thanks for watching and hope you have a great day! 💖💖💖

    Thank You Doing This Video,
    I Haven't Been Colouring Long, Any Idea Why On Some Of My Pictures, I Can See Tiny White Marks Under My Colouring. I Don't Have Prisma Colours Can Not Afford Them
    Take Care.

      Hi, Deb! Thanks for this question - I'm guessing that the white marks are the ridges (or texture of the paper) that aren't getting colored. Try using a super sharp pencil an pushing down as you color to flatten that texture of the paper so the pencil color can reach it. And trust me - you don't need fancy pencils to do this - any pencil should be able to. If this doesn't work, please let me know. I'd love to help you conquer this one! Thanks for stopping by my little channel. Please keep me posted, ok? Have a great day! - Kim 💖

    That's exactly WHY I don't purchase amazon paper coloring books. The precious time I use for coloring I prefer to use the ones I enjoy to color. The point is to enjoy. I'm just not interested to waist my time to low quality paper. I will not enjoy. That's all.

    • @snickerdoodlingllc

      I totally get it and don't disagree with you! And yes - coloring is 100% about relaxing and enjoyment. When we are fighting against that, it completely defeats the purpose! After creating this video, I learned so much from people like you. I most of all learned that not all Amazon paper is created equally. I truly value and appreciate your opinion and am grateful for all the informative comments I've received. Appreciate you watching! Hope you have a great day! 💖💖💖

      LOL so true, Renee! You could also scan the Amazon paper books and print with nice card stock on your printer. Lots of options for sure. Thanks so much for stopping by my little channel 💖💖💖
