Nice look at budget gear! I've learned a couple of other tricks that don't cost an arm and a leg. First, I think anyone who grew up as a kid in the midwest a few decades ago, knew their feet would get cold and wet walking to school in the winter. Moms always had a few bread bags laying around from Wonder Bread, or whatever brand your store sold. Those bags still work great for winter camping. When at camp, put on dry socks and if you need to do stuff outside of the tent or get up in the night to do whatever, put your feet in the bags to keep your socks dry. In the morning, when you need to put on those wet boots or shoes, use the bags for a little while. But do remember to take them off as your shoes dry out so your feet don't sweat and cause blisters. If you don't have bread bags but you do have a dog, the doggy poop bags work just as well to keep your feet dry in boots or shoes.
Another trick is to use a trash bag to line the inside of the backpack. Put all the stuff you need to keep dry in first, like sleeping bag, clothing and whatever, then twist the trash bag down and tuck it tight to be water tight. Then the other stuff can go on top of that. In the morning, when you are putting anything that may have gotten wet or snowy back in the pack, your sleeping gear and clothing will be protected in the trash bag. It also comes in handy if you need to keep your backpack in the vestibule. I stick mine right in the trashbag to make sure it stays pretty dry and protected.
Another great thing we bring is hot hands body warmers and hand warmers. The body warmers have a sticky portion to put on the outside of your clothes, like on your groin or stomach. The hot hands can go down by your feet and socks.
I live in CO and found some very inexpensive micro spikes by unigear and other companies sold on Amazon. A few are under $20 and pull right over your boots or shoes to keep you from slipping on icy trails or packed snow. I use spray ski wax to keep snow from balling up, but I've heard spray on cooking oil may do the same thing. I haven't tried that though.
If someone sleeps really cold, like many women do, I recommend putting that yoga mat or another closed cell foam mat under or on top of your inflatable mat for extra insulation. Another thing to do is to take an inexpensive down blanket from Costco or Sam's. They are good for about 40 degrees F, BUT when doubled up with a sleeping bag, they can really add some warmth. Oh, and if bringing a chair for winter camping, the yoga pad or foam pad can be used in a chair to keep your butt and back warmer!
I know you also said don't worry about Nalgenes, however in the winter, you can boil water and put it in your nalgene. Turn the lid securely and really test for leaks, then put it in your sleeping bag with you like a hot water bottle. In the morning, that same water can be used for breakfast, coffee or oatmeal. If water is left out of the tent, it will freeze.
I guess the last big lesson I learned if I took a small gas canister stove to heat up my water would be to sleep with my gas down in my sleeping bag to keep it warm If its too cold, it won't get very hot, if at all, in the morning when your really want a hot drink.

Absolutely! you missed a ggod that I learned from my hillbilly.kin. Take an old pair of socks and small slits at the ends of them and wear them like gloves. This would serve to keep your arms and wrists warm and your fingers free forth those tactile things you need to do. Works great and when you need to busing your fingers you can always wear a pair of gloves over top.

Trash bags, especially those 3 mil contractor bags, can be put over yourself as a poncho, ( cut holes in them for openings for your arms & head). as well as a second one can be used to cover your backpack in rainy, or wet snowy weather. As a young man i used them to keep myself & belongings dry while hitch-hiking here in the states. It works.

Great video as usual. Useful tip. Take medicine on your camping trip. One time I forgot to take my over the counter medicine and I had bad heartburn that made my trip miserable. I take Tums and Pepto Bismol and aspirin and a few first aid supplies. Aspirin can save your life. It's not a bad idea to take aspirin a few days before and during a camping trip.

@@CampingwithSamBananas my first trip I learned that the tent is warmer with the fly on. Bring a sleeping bag even if you think it will be to warm because it may not be. Don’t put your tent broadside into the wind. Guy lines are there for a reason. Secure the fly to the tent poles when using said guy lines. Dry bag is not a substitute for a pillow. Don’t bring the whole garage. Don’t need a tent light plus a flash light plus a cell phone light just a headlamp will do for most situations. Sand gets everywhere. I could go on and on.

Another great thing to have is a wire grate for either a 1/3rd or 1/2 pan from a restaurant supply store. It's good that you did this video because newbies need to know they shouldn't spend their retirement on backpacking gear until they determine they like it. Plus, if you look hard enough you can usually find some pretty lightweight, good gear at fairly reasonable prices. Mardingtop is a good example. Gear Doctor is another. 3F UL has very good trekking pole tents, Stanley makes a great pot and frying pan, etc. Keep up the good work.
