  • Sorry if this isn't the best video (and that you can hear my dog playing with his squeaky toy in the background...and the dryer tumbling, lol). I wanted to make a video talking about different types of taxidermy, especially including some newer/lesser known types of taxidermy. The only thing that I know I failed to cover is rogue taxidermy. Feel free to ask questions or share your knowledge in the comments section. =)
    No I did not kill any of these animals, I'm just a collector. Yes most if not all of those animals were hunted or trapped, some as nuisance animals and some for "sport". I didn't buy any from the original hunters/trappers but yes it is still in a way supporting their actions by proxy. None of these animals are illegal to own, were poached, or otherwise obtained through any kind of illegal activity. Yes I am ok with hunting and trapping so long as it is done legally and is managed.

      I’d like more Soft Mount related videos!💗
      I just fell in love with soft Mounts and Taxidermy a few years ago, but it‘s sad how small the soft mount community is. I live in Austria 🇦🇹 and literally no one knows about soft mounts, thats Crazy!😭😂
      soft mounts should get a lot more attention, because right now, there are not many people who know about soft mounts, which is so freakin sad actually.💔

    I'm loving the cuddly toy concept. I was thinking I'd get my cat turned into a rug. But how much better to turn her into a cuddly toy for the kiddies to have? Rather than a teddy bear? The head only, fox one. Love it.

      Soft mounts are not really toys. While they may resemble toys more than traditional taxidermy, they are still much more fragile and need to be taken care of well to last. Unlike toys, you cannot be rough with a soft mount, and you don't want to over-handle them; they are not a suitable replacement for children's toys (think of them more like a porcelain doll). Many have to be "retired" and may wear out quickly. Because of this as well as the fact that they are not as "life-like" as traditional taxidermy, it's generally not advised to get a pet mounted this way. Some people have and liked the results though, so do what you think is best for you. Finding a taxidermist willing to mount a pet this way will be very challenging though, just a heads up. Make sure it's what you really want before going through with it with a pet; you do not want to have your good memories of your pet become tainted, or leave yourself open for feeling sad any time you see their remains (this is true for just about any pet preservation). If you want a soft mount of your pet keep in mind they will have their proportions distorted (especially with cats, the necks tend to be very long looking, or some people complain that their bodies look noodle-like). On the flip-side for a rug the risks for it turning out to not be what you actually wanted are similar, only now the body is flat and even less life-like. Whatever you choose to do, I hope it will bring you comfort. I know for my pets I couldn't handle having anything done with their pelts that I'd have to see regularly after they pass, but I do plan on having their skeletons articulated. Other people I've talked with really enjoyed having their pets' skins there either mounted traditionally, soft mounted, or even freeze-dried (the best option for having your pet look the same as they used to). My family still has the ashes of our past dogs, and I have found comfort in having some of those ashes preserved in glass cremation jewelry, while some of my friends preferred traditional burial for their pets. Do what is best for you and your family

    Can a wolf be a posable soft mount? I got a wolf pelt and I'm trying to decide what to do with her as part of me wants to give her a diorama but tge other part of me wants to cuddle her

      Yup! For a short while I actually owned a poseable wolf soft mount =) It's hard to make larger animals like a wolf be poseable to the point where they can stand up on their own, but they can still have more posing options than your regular soft mount.

      I HIGHLY recommend Urban Nature Taxidermy. Met her in person a few times, and have done business with her multiple times. A+ quality, one of the few soft mount taxidermists I know who has a decent turn-around time and knows how to do business properly, and overall great person.
      I'm not sure if they can work on wolves (weird issue of state laws vs tribal laws), but if they can, I also would recommend ChallengersVeir Taxidermy. Also high quality, someone I've met in person multiple times and would say is an upstanding person, one of the OG's of the soft mount community, and relatively easy to work with. It sounds like they plan on "retiring" from taxidermy in the foreseeable future though, so if you want to have them mount your wolf, better contact them soon.

    Hey if I want to turn my cat into one of those raccoon hats how much do you estimate the cost (he's roughly 15-20 lbs)

    • @wolfforce58205
      @wolfforce58205  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly that'll depend on who you commission to do it. And what condition you deliver the cat to them in. Finding someone who would be willing to then your cat into a cap would of course be the most difficult part, but people have made weirder things. If I were you and wanted to really do that I'd recommend finding someone who would be willing to skin and tan a cat first. That way at worst you can make the cap yourself. I don't make fur crafts myself but I think people usually use 2 small animals for caps? Unless you use the belly fur, I guess. A lot of times furriers won't use legs, tails, faces, or bellies. If your cat has thin fur or is really small it might not work out so well. If you ever turn your cat into a cap make sure to get a Buzzfeed article about it or something. Might become the new "turned cat into a purse" or "turned cat into drone" person.

      Oh, this is funny, and I wish I could share a picture with you now. But I'm reading, "Furiously Happy" by Jenny Lawson and I think this quote may contribute to your question, "You can make a hat out of a cat's face but that doesn't make it a good hat. Unless you line it first." (Page 250). So I guess make sure if you make it yourself that you line the hat.
