We have a 50 amp plug at our garage that the previous owner installed, so by necessity I learned about the 50-30 adapter. You have found your calling with RVs and videos. You're good at teaching and I enjoy your calm demeanor on camera.
From a brand new motorhome owner (I pick it up in 1 week) I am starting at ground zero as a single mom.... this kind of content is VERY helpful! Thank you
Good job Scott. I’m a 30 year RVr, now in a Travato. I enjoyed your very thorough presentation. Although you showed it in your video, it’s important to tell everyone to turn off the power switch at the post until all connections are made!
Great video and making my lists as I will be needing these soon. Some items are must have. Your amazon list is convenient and will be joining Harvest Host in the next few days before the price increase. This video was electrifying!
Scott, your explanation was simple and direct. I have never stayed at a campsite with my 30 amp Jayco Motorhome. I do have the surge protector, extra extension electric hose, 50 amp adaptor so that I am prepared. Better to have it and NOT need it, than need it and NOY have it. I grew up in St. Petersburg, now live in Reno, NV. Safe travels to you and Luke!
Thanks for applying the ( KISS METHOD ) To your video. I did find it helpful as far as using a 50A to a 30A & how you can still hook your surge protector in between. Also your tip on paying for a 50A when your only using a 30A to your camper. All this was new to me this year as I just bought a 50A to a 30A adaptor , & a surge protector. We have a 2008 22' Airstream Safari 30A travel trailer that we bought new in 2009, & this will be the 1st time we have used both at any camp ground; So that would be 15 years without using either, But the camp ground we stay at this time of year for the 1st time had reservations on all the 30A sites, & only 50A hook up available. Thanks again for your helpful video.
Richard from California. Thanks for the info on the 50 to 30 amp as I don't have one yet. We just came home from camping where we had no power. We love our NPE KL. So much freedom.
Thanks - Just a tip don't ever use the locking ring this way if you forget to pull the plug it won't destroy you van and receptacle. Once you lock it its not slipping off. Mike
I've had my 2021 Travato 59GL for a month and already had to use a 50a-to-30a adapter. It's not like 50amps is being sent into your rig, your rig is only going to take 30amps of that 50 service. At my sister's place I use the 30amp-to-15amp adapter and a 50' 15amp extension cord (MAKE SURE IT'S A 15 AMP EXTENSION CORD!) and step down the inverter to 15amp and it works like a charm as well.
Thanks Scott! Inverter Generators with 30a sockets also come in handy when your site does not have electrical hookups and Generators are allowed. Our Generator is a Westinghouse i400DF (Dual Fuel) and we run exclusively on Propane so we don’t need Gasoline.
Thanks Scott !! The whole series are just fantastic. In the very near future we will be RVer for sure. J from Nor Cal Bay Area. (Did I mention the great weather we have here🤟)
i am watching this vid in Jan 2023 , But i wanted to say it may not be as common with modern campers , but i recently purchased a 1964 shasta camper trailer from a friend and IT uses just the 15 or 20 amp house style plug ( i intend to do a little converting later but trying to keep it looking original) so those 15-20 amp plugs may not be just for tent campers and just a bit of prep suggestion everyone should keep those converter plugs on hand in various configurations 50-30 30-15 15-30 etc. as my boss got the security contract at a rodeo and needed to use generators and wound up having to search a lot of places to get the ones he needed cause one camper was wired for 30 a but the other for 50 a and of course neither had that stupid generator style twist plug.
Your bonus tip about politely/humbly asking if you could have a reduced campsite-rate for just drawing limited power is certainly "right on the nose", especially for disabled and/or low-income folks like yours truly... it is indeed 100% true that many folks will try to accommodate you if you just "ask nicely" --- everything from a waived fee for an accidental overdraft due to an illness/stressful-interval/computer-glitch mishap ("I was not intentionally being irresponsible, and I almost never goof up like this, so I wondered if I could please get this fee waived as a one-time loyal/responsible-customer-reward courtesy.") to my walking-infirm semi-elderly sister's being permitted to bring her small well-behaved dog in with her to a hardware store that normally does not allow pets ("The dog feels restless and scared to be left alone in the car, and he is somewhat of a therapy-dog for her, too. She or I will be carrying/holding him all the time, too; he's just a quiet lap-dog."). :D :D
Once again a very good video, Scott. I had the same learning curve with my boat and shore power. I had to Cary a splitter for 50 to 30. Watching from Bradenton so I know how fantastic the weather is.

Looks nice in Florida. We know all about Volta and A/C but what about Volta and heating? Next time you are up North can you try the Truma set to all electric and see how much power heating eats up. I am thinking with the 2022 KL (on order) I won't really need propane. Thanks!

Keith, the electric consumption for heat is actually more than A/C. and the heat output is not nearly as hot compared to propane heat. Using electric heat makes sense when plugged into shore power and the temps are above 40F degrees. Other wise propane is the heat source of choice.

Hello Scott: I live in the Panhandle, My future class B Van has a 500 watts of charging when plugged into a standard amp extension cord, what power line, plugs and surge-protector do I need for the hookup? Thanks again for sharing and making videos that help the Class B RV lifestyle!
My experience show one needs a 10 gauge extension cord and a 15 AMP circuit without any load, and you RV needs to ability to reduce the AMP ingest to meet the load of the circuit.
Shore power comes from 'shore, an abbreviation of "for sure". It is a southern expression. Say you come to visit and lights are on. You say "Wow, you got power!" I say "...'shore, power."

Scott, Do you have a 15 amp adapter to plug in at home or at mooch docking sites? What is necessary on the rig to assure that you do not overload the 15 amp circuit? Great video. Since we are still looking for our first shuttlecraft I have not actually seen a power pole in use, other than I assumed the rig came with a cord to plug it in. From what I understand 30 amp RV's have one A/C unit and 50 amp rigs usually have multiple air conditioners. I guess size does matter.

Also, what is the power drain on your batteries, if you have your AC inverter turned on, but no electronics powered on or drawing power? Oh and do you have a Twitter account? Thanks!
Great great explanation about shore power!! Having the additional adaptors is very helpful to know (when/if I get a rig.) I wondered why the surge protector was needed. I am dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to like, for example my electric box in my house and when or how to use!! Had to get my husband to label the dang switches so I know how to flip the switch when we have a power outage in a part of the house. I’m still not sure why you need to flip the power outlets off on the shore power before plugging in or Vice versus...oh well...I’m sure I would figure it out after playing around with it.
Quick suggestion for a future video... as a “wannabe” I’m having a blast educating myself on current Class B vans... but we’re still 5-10 years from buying. It was 50 amp to 30 amp ADAPTER but not CONVERTER. If yes then it is really dangerous to use it because you can brake all electronical components in your van sir. Am i correct Scott?
Ummm. The 50 to 30 AMP adapter is missing one prong which makes the conversion. No electical engineer here, but that is what I am told and have experienced personally. No issues with the adapter. Alwasy use 110 volt, NOT 240 volt. That will melt your RV ;)
Just a thought. Maybe asking for two thumbs up for Luke isnt the best advice. When you hit the thumbs up button twice it actually cancels the first thumbs up. So no thumbs up at all. I hit it once.😁👍
Great explanation from audience member… 30 amp is 120. 50 amp is 240. What the 50 to 30 adapter does is eliminate one of the positive leads converting it to 120. Thx Dan!

Just a thought. Maybe asking for two thumbs up for Luke isnt the best advice. When you hit the thumbs up button twice it actually cancels the first thumbs up. So no thumbs up at all. I hit it once.😁👍
LOL… Good point!
Thanks!
You bet!
9:06 Well, calling it "shore power" could still work for an RV, since it's a "land yacht". :D
Most in RV community refer to plug in electric at campsite at shore-power, but I get your point
Scott thank you for this video and explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
Why not do a video focusing on van life from the Cats perspective? I would be interested in seeing the life from the cats perspective.
fun idea!
7:40 Better to HAVE IT and NEVER NEED IT than NEED IT and NOT HAVE IT. :D
LOL
Scott, thank you! But where are the links to buy these adapters? Thanks, I want to order these!!!
I think they are in my Amazon store… gosmalllivelarge.com/store-get-your-gear
Isn't that crazy that they put the Water by the electric you would think that would be a no no
Agree with you Dave
Is the 30amp plug 240 volts?
120 I believe. Here’s an article I came across about that issue. www.rvtravel.com/a-common-expensive-mistake-when-installing-30-amp-rv-outlet-at-home/
30 amp is 120. 50 amp is 240. What the 50 to 30 adapter does is eliminate one of the positive leads converting it to 120.
Great explanation from audience member… 30 amp is 120. 50 amp is 240. What the 50 to 30 adapter does is eliminate one of the positive leads converting it to 120.
Thx Dan!

If you're a wannabee, you need to hear this over & over again until it is 2nd nature. If you do it all of the time, you may not need it. IDK.
thx Linda
You kinda look like Al Gore.
