    Insects like mealy bugs also produce a kind of nectar that attracts ants to defend them against predators like the mealy bug destroyer while they feast on the plant (usually citrus). So the bodyguard trick can cut both ways, depending on who's doing the bribing.

    • @peanutbutter369
      @peanutbutter369 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Hogg I saw that video lol! My guess is either because it looks like a snake or large insect which could be dangerous to the cat or that the cucumbers were sneakily placed behind the cats while they were busy eating and seeing it appear out of nowhere behind them freaks them out :D

    SciShow, can you guys slow down the speech monologue used in videos? At some points, you're talking so fast, I'm concentrating more on deciphering the really fast speech versus understanding the information.
    Also, the jump cuts don't help much if the natural speech patterns are interrupted, and causes monologues to turn into even larger blocks of monologues.
    Otherwise, I love everything you do!

    I grow many cacti and some do produce extrafloral nectores and specialized aerols (where new spines and blooms come from in cacti) that produce nector the only issue is when there arnt any ants near by it can be a pain why? Because other things come to take the nector and that would be mold

    This isn’t really related to plants but it’s about bugs that live ON plants, aphids produce a byproduct called honey dew (it’s... really sugary poop, don’t eat it), which larger bugs eat. This attracts things like bees and ants which in turn, scare away any ladybugs on the plant, the natural predator of aphids. They literally poop to save their own lives.

    I was wondering about the science behind "talents", why are some people so much better than others at something even when, at times the same effort was put in, thinking of my own "talents" (drawing and artistic endeavours, as well as academic intelligence in maths and science but mostly drawing). I was disliked people saying I was "talented" because I put effort into things and usually have the assumption people can do the same (given drawing is the use of lines, curves and geometry) and usually can, but with a lot more effort. I really wonder why, (I assume it is to do with hand eye coordination, or whatever fits a given activity) but I don't like assuming.

    What is the difference between a mutualistic relationship and a symbiotic relationship?

    • @bananizen
      @bananizen 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ayman Hadi A mutualistic relationship is a form of symbiotic relationship. Symbiosis just means living together. Other forms of symbiotic relationship includes parasitism and Comensialism( positive for one part and no effect for the other).

    • @Brandyalla
      @Brandyalla 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, not quite.
      +Ayman Hadi
      Symbiosis: The two organisms need each other to survive; one or both will die if they're separated.
      Mutualism: Each organism benefits, but they can both survive apart.
      Commensalism: The two organisms live together, but there is neither benefit nor harm to either one.
      Parasitism: One organism uses the other for its own benefit, harming it in the process.

    I don't get how plants can have such intelligence. Does this prove there is a God?

    • @Peter98
      @Peter98 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't, there's nothing more to plants then splitting cells and a root to absorb nutrients needed to do so. Plants don't have a consciousness, a mind or even organs really, they do all this stuff because of a slightly altered gene in their DNA that gives them this property. It all just happens, they can't control it, neither do they know it's happening, because they are not anything more then splitting cells following a DNA blueprint.

    • @ShartySpice
      @ShartySpice 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Well something intelligent is obviously at work.

    • @FireHax0rd
      @FireHax0rd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Giuliana Rexic Plants that do not have these defense mechanisms die out and do not reproduce. The plants that do evolve these defense systems stay alive and are able to reproduce more plants like themselves. There's nothing "intelligent" about it in the sense that plants have a consciousness, although that is not to suggest it is not fascinating.
      You can chose to believe there is a God behind all of this, but you cannot prove such. "Proving" is a scientific process, and believing in a higher deity is not something that involves science. That is not to say that one is better than the other.. you just can't intermix them

    • @ShartySpice
      @ShartySpice 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FireHax0rd I don't believe in God. But for these mechanisms to just **poof** evolve into existence in the first place seems highly, highly unlikely to me. Something intelligent is at work in order for a plant to develop something like this to begin with.
