What's the definition of mites? -from the barely visible little red dot size bugs that zoom along walls to the microscopic non-pooping face invaders -What do they have in common, and how are they classified? (Clearly, not all bugs are insects and arachnids, and on that point, What's the deal with centipedes and millipedes?)

    Quick question: How do aphids "choose" which of the three offspring to birth? Live, live w/ wings, or eggs of sexually (instead of asexually) reproducing males and females that hatch in the next season? Do they just turn certain genes on and off, as in - do they have a CRISPR-9 engine in their ovaries? I'm extremely curious

    Shouldn't these type of Aphids be fairly easy to modify in the DNA structure? Since they can produce so much generations so quickly, if you input just a tiny aberration or radiate them just a TINY bit to mutate them, you can essentially under right conditions create a new species within just a year.

  • @ianmelzer
    @ianmelzer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Aphids don't suck, they passively allow fluid to pass through them. The pressure inside the plant pushes sap into and through the aphid. The aphid strain out nutrients and the rest is excreted.

    This is such a brilliant coincidence :P In my evolution lecture last thursday my lecturer couldn't stop raving about how interesting Aphids are. And to be fair, I would probably have to agree :P

    Can you just imagine if aphids came in different flavors like jelly beans? Like one beetle is out and about and he's like, "Carl check it out these aphid beans are pina colada." And Carl eats one and says, "Holly Hell Steve, this isn't pina colada!" And Steve says, "oh, I got you good you bastard: it's licorice flavor!"

    Perfect timing! I was wondering what all those tiny little white bugs were crawling around in my pot. This probably explains why none of my seedlings are getting very big, and seem to shrivel up at the base, fall over, and die. Time to find some lady beetles or poison.

      if they shrivel and die like they are rotting, thats called dampening off. its a diseas that lives in the soil.

      It was Spring Lake North Carolina. I can't remember the year maybe '97 or '98. The fields around us were mostly cotton and tobacco; though, I think they were doing soybean as well at the time. It was joyous amounts of fun, I promise.
