    Stuff to note
Zimbabwe was the breadbasket of Africa, those white farmer produced lots of food as well as good jobs for black Zimbabweans
The UK was funding a scheme that paid for white farms to be given to blacks on a willing seller basis. Mugabe decide just to steal them.
Mugabe gave farms to his supporters who had never farmed before and the farms fell into disuse.
Zimbabwean white farmers that moved to Zambia cause a boom in maize production.
Zimbabwe ended up with millions starving.
Zimbabwe begged the white farmers to come back.

    • @nocare
      @nocare ปีที่แล้ว +151

It's been demonstrated that even benevolent dictators have to do the same thing.
Since there power is built upon the people who supported them and not all of them will be benevolent too. They will expect special treatment and to stay in power you need their support and must give it to them.
Even if they are benevolent what about their underlings, and their underlings underlings.
It ends up that it has to be benevolence all the way down for it to not work like this.
Sure the more people at the top that are benevolent the better the result but it still flawed.
Sadly democracy still suffers the same problem its just very very spread out with the degree of bribery/lobbying that is allowed being the primary driver of how bad the result is.

It was not very bloody then and permitted whites to keep their properties and stay. But twenty years later he was claimed those promised lands by those old revolutionary forces, akin to Tom Toms, and their supporters. Those were the mobs that Mugabe let act as they wished, and the delayed bloodbath happened. Then, Zimbabwean weak economy totally vanished. My sister had been living there for fifteen years. Fun fact: The vast majority of "native" Zimbabweans came from nomads that settled in the English colony because of stability, safety (from crime and racial and tribal violence,) and the superior quality of life it offered. Rhodesia, despite being a colony, did not "colonize" the vast majority of its inhabitants. Overwhelming odds are, that if you consider yourself a "African native" to Zimbabwe, you do not even belong to a family that lived in the lands of Zambesia or what would become Rhodesia... Before the Rhodesians settled there.
Zapu and Zanu, backed by the Soviet Union and communist China respectively, put a lot of focus on racial hatred towards white people in order to paint them as the enemy so they could mobilize the surrounding Africans around Rhodesia to attack and attack to overthrow Rhodesia out of pure disdain and hatred. China and the Soviet Union obviously wanted this, because Rhodesia was a very powerful economic force in Africa, and very anti-communist. Getting rid of them would further destabilize Africa and make it easier for further conquest.
When you read about the Rhodesian Bush Wars... You might notice it's not actually a civil war. Rhodesia didn't fight with itself to become Zimbabwe. It was Rhodesia, both black and white, against invading forces from other countries that wished to push their ideologies and "free the oppressed minority-ruled black population," or that was the claim at least. The vast majority of blacks in Rhodesia opposed Zanu and Zapu, clearly being smart enough to realize that they were conquerors and not liberators.
Robert Mugabe, being directly tied to Zapu, and elected largely in part thanks to well documented coercion by Zapu forces that the UN for some reason found no problem with... of course he continued the trend of white hatred in order to unify the population through mutual hatred of a specific race or ethnicity (sound familiar?) In spite of his complete incompetence and inability to govern and lead the country (admittedly, that part sounds less familiar. He mirrors a certain someone else, but doesn't even bring the positives to the table like repairing and maintaining an economy or even being a partway competent warmonger, as exemplified by his conquests in the congo.)
So of course, he continued to perpetuate the lies that the Zapu and Zanu forces were indoctrinated with, about all whites being oppressors and colonizers, and of course distorted the history of Rhodesia in order to paint it as a villainous and oppressive, to try and help people cope with the loss of the previous establishment, and look positively upon the new and improved black-lead Zimbabwean government.
Imagine voluntarily joining a foreign settlement for your own benefit, and the crying "they colonized me!!!" When the popular narrative allows it. Of course, this could have happened with some, but with others, it could have been people who were a couple generations down from the nomads who originally settled in the English colony. So in that case would be more like great grandfather joined a settlement from a nomadic past, and the most recent generation believing that they were colonized. Indoctrination is a hell of a thing.
Ironically, the Rhodesians were the ones who were colonized. They were more indigenous to the area at least in terms of being settled there, than many people who live in Zimbabwe today, or used to.
