I feel like you were trying so hard the last few years to be gentle when you didn't like a book. To not upset anyone. I really appreciated hearing some of your honest opinions. You did a good job of expressing yourself without getting super spicy. Best vibes I've felt in one of these types of videos. ❤

I wish it'd happen more often throughout booktube. Someone saying why they didn't like a book doesn't speak poorly on those who enjoyed it. Its all subjective. People who get mad about it will whether or not someone prefaces it with the whole spiel about it just being their opinion and its fine if you like it etc etc.

    • @mercurymorning1
      @mercurymorning1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@karakask5488 it’s even more meandering than The Night Circus (which I loved!) - at least in that book you grasp a central location (the circus) and there is at least one through line you can follow (the love story) - Starless Sea starts off with that and you think you’ll be following a character mainly with a lot of beautifully written side stuff but then the main plot kind of disappears into the side stuff and never goes anywhere - it feels like she’s trying to build and build up this world but she forgets to tie anything off - then tries to by saying the point is that stories never end…? It didn’t convince me tbh it felt like she didn’t know how to end the story so she just kept writing and picked an arbitrary place to stop

Loved Final Girls Support Group honestly mostly because I had such a blast hunting for Easter eggs. I felt like I was just sitting in a basement nerding out about horror movies with my perasocial pal Grady, which I found to be a blast. I had some of the same criticisms you did, actually, but I was having so much fun that it didn't matter at all. I was so invested and had so much fun. Never had an issue differentiated between the characters at all, either. I actually think these characters were the most distinct of any of his books.

I loved the Starless Sea because it felt like a puzzle to read. And there were some solutions but other threads were left hanging but it all felt right anyhow. Like most of the side stories in the book actually connect to the main plot in a weird way. It's like the smaller stories are extended metaphors about what is happening or what has happened. Also I do kind of love being confused if it's done right 😂 but I can also admit that it's a book I shouldn't have liked because I usually don't care for this amount of aimlessness.
Plus it is 100% vibes only.

My least favorite book: Every Vow You Break by Peter Swanson ---- If I don't like Nine Lives next year, I'm done. I also read Eight Perfect Murders, and I didn't like that either. Swanson... you are officially on the chopping block. :)
My most disappointing book: The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon --- I loved the story. It starts off strong. It had a few great moments, but I feel like it went on for too long and it got boring at times. It had a great ending with not much of an explanation for why things were the way they were. For me, the best part of a ghost story is understanding a haunting is happening in the 1st place. I guess I just wanted more.
The forgotten: The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave --- This was a Goodreads Choice 2021 winner. I was so excited to read it until I realized I read it already. Apparently, I even gave it 4 stars. So, I read it, but I remember nothing about it. LOL At least I had fun at the time.
DNF: The Hunting Wives by May Cobb--- Nope, nope, nope. This just made me very uncomfy.
Yup, that's my rant for the day. :)

I gave it 5 ⭐️. How ever I also dislike other books that people love…fir example I hated Moby Dick and many people love it…That’s why we all should never go by what others say and just read and judge for ourselves. I also have found on rereads I’ve changed my mind both fir the better and for the worse. My mood or my age at the time of my read really makes a difference I’ve found.

I read three Grady Hendrix books this year, and DNF'd The Final Girl Support Group halfway through. It just felt repetitive and too over-the-top (even for a Grady Hendrix book), and I wasn't a big enough slasher fan to want to continue for that aspect. My favorite Grady Hendrix book ended up being Horrorstor, followed by My Best Friend's Exorcism. The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires was pretty good, but the gaslighting was a little annoying (although that was kind of the point).

I really loved the book of accidents! Not a favorite but I had a lot of fun with it. I haven’t read very much Stephen king, which of his books were similar? I’m definitely looking for more books to read that feel like this one :)

I don’t think you need to dumb down your intellect for people who may get offended by your opinion. “ I’m not smart enough”…There are many reasons why a book may not work for an individual person. If you didn’t enjoy your reading experience you didn’t enjoy it and that’s it.

I couldn’t even read the synopsis of The Atlas Six without fumbling over my words and not understanding what I was reading, so I’m intrigued but don’t think it will be for me if I can’t even read the back of the book 😅
Also 100% agree on Final Girl Support Group and Starless Sea.

I loved where the crawdads sing!!! Also i had not read physical book in about 5 years.😱😱😱 just so wrapped up with kids and a big reading slump. So for me i think it was just a perfect time for me to read it and love it 🥰 and it got me into reading like i haven't been since before kids.. but I could see your point forhsure. 🙂

Oh I think it's completely legit to call a classic "overhyped". Actually, I often feel like classics (regardless of the media) are overhyped and should be criticized to see them for what they can really do now. Doesn't erase the good they do at some point, but it's totally right to affirm that it's not as great as it was made to be, from your perspective 🙃

You mentioned a lot of books similar to ones that you like so I'm wondering what you would recommend in place of The Starless Sea, The Book of Accidents, or The Atlas 6. From what you said they seem like things I would enjoy but if you prefer others of the same vein I'd love to hear about those! Could even be a stand alone video of "If you liked ____, try ___" with ones you liked more that were similar. Thanks for the insights!

I completely agree with crawdads. The writing was so wildly different during the story. When she's describing food or a setting: gorgeous, beautiful, suck me into the story. The dialog though: I felt like I was reading a children's picture book. Also, the narrator would repeat what was just said in the dialog. I gave it 2 stars.

I'm so glad I read Crawdads before it got all the hype. It's a 3star read for me - it's fine. It's fine! But the tongue baths are... yes. Confusing. Also, THANK YOU for critiquing Atlas Six. I needed those hours of my life back. That entire plot could have been a TikTok, much less have it recc'd on TikTok.

I don't disagree with you at all on Where the Crawdads Sing. After your thoughts on The Starless Sea which I very much appreciate, I will be unhauling that. I have hope that I might at least like The Book of Accidents, and Final Girls Support Group. It's worth a read at least once. Hopefully 😄

I agree with Where the Crawdads Sing being overhyped. I had numerous issues, but in the end could not get over the use of terms that are not common to the region and some geographic choices that made no sense.
