    Boats 44ish and up. Had a Kelly Peterson 44’ center cocpit. Loved it. 15 opening ports. 3 large hatches and 2 full companionways. Great ventilation. Large engine space. 2 heads 2 showers great boat. Also had, my favorite a CAL ll-46 Ketch. CC, full headroom WALK IN engine room with a drill press, a vice and 8kw gen, 20 gph water maker. All pumps and such IN the engine ROOM. 220 gal water 270 gal diesel! Galley had 16 feet of counter space, the fwd and aft hanging lockers we big enough to get in and close the door! I sailed 200 mile days and the 85 hp Perkins with 3:1 reduction turned a 26” prop that could motor straight into a near gale.
    And yes, this boat was waaaay ahead of its time. It was built in 1973 and is STILL crossing oceans! Gee, you might say that I like this boat. Yeah, for larger boats, center cocpit for sure. And both of these boats had deep secure cocpits. Never a problem and much drier that aft. Many aft Cocpit boats you were sitting only a foot or two from the sea! One pooping wave and you are under water.

    You missed the biggest reason the Center Cockpit Boats have gained in popularity!
    As the target buyer of sailing vessels have aged and become more affluent, the function of a CC boat has become more necessary!! As you age, getting up to go to the bathroom is pretty normal, the rear stateroom with a bed that you can easily slide out of, without crawling over you partner, becomes the difference between a livable situation vs being on a camping trip!!!

    I've owned both and sailed on many examples of both. The two have different strengths but overall I prefer the CC. As for not being able to have a successful centre cockpit under 45ft, my turn to call BS. Ted Brewer designed the centre cockpit Whitby 42 about 50 years ago with plenty of head room below and in the cockpit, great aft cabin with secure bunk, incredible storage throughout, spacious engine room with access all around the motor, tankage modern boat owners can only dream of and they sail pretty well too.

      Yes you can find them on ones under 45, the Whitbey 42 though would not be my personal choice for several reasons but they do have a great layout for a cc under 45

    I didn't do a before & after simply because I know what I want. I want a boat steered with a tiller, which dictates an aft cockpit-simple as that. Though helms are neat and look nice, I prefer the simplicity of a tiller, because there's simply less to go wrong, less to break down; there are no cables, pulleys, and/or linkages to deal with on a tiller. Also, autopilot options are easier, simpler, and cheaper.

    I have owned 45´ and 53´ aft cockpit boats and currently own a 48´ center cockpit. I prefer the center cockpit for many reasons particularly the ability of having a spacious aft cabin plus I feel more protected, especially from following seas. I agree that boats under 45’ just don’t work well in a center cockpit format. Additionally for boats in the 57’+ range you can have a decent aft cabin with an aft cockpit...so you could go either way. I think the mid range of sizes, 45-60’, a boat lays out particularly well with a center cockpit. When at anchor sleeping in the forward cabin gets too bouncy for my taste. You do feel closer to the water in an aft cockpit which here again is both a pro and a con. YMMV

    • @ChasingLatitudes

      I agree on what you say about size as well

    • @ChasingLatitudes
      @ChasingLatitudes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I Said the same thing in the video, once above 45 foot is just a personal choice as the rest is out the window. Under 45 its not ideal as he stated and I believe I eluded to in the video.. He is simply referring to aft cabin size on 45 to 60 foot cc boats. 40 and under in my opinion a aft helm is overall better.The reality is the aft cabin is the main selling point for cc sailboats. The rest is just misconceptions, few hints of truth but mostly misconceptions.

    After watching the video my preference is still for a center cockpit. Add a hard dodger, hatches in the aft cabin, a swim platform (think of the Amel 50) and you've addressed all your concerns.

    I've never sailed but i like the floorplan of cc best. With the raised roof for the main cabin behind the cockpit. Seems like it would give a nice spot to secure a dingy where you would be unloading along with access on and off the boat. With a hard canopy over the cockpit and dingy area would make lots of space for solor panels.

    As a single handed sailor I would prefer the non CC because i would spend my time in the salon area for the most part and up on deck. The cabin would be just for snoozing so im not too worried about the massive bedroom. The deal breaker would be the CC dont have the open space and accessibility of the aft cockpit and also the boom whizzing around above my head when at sea is a concern on the CC. Freeboard is another.

    You should look at the columbia 45. Its really unique. Its a flush deck CC that is open in the rear. Its the reason i bought the boat. No climbing out of the CC and easy access topside , but all the but all the benefits of the CC. I am converting mine to a fully enclosed pilothousem

  • @TaVestru
    @TaVestru 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it all depends what is your style. I got a Beneteau First 345 to have some sailing fun with it. I also lived in it for quite some time. But now after 5 years I got a bit tired being cramped and too exposed to the weather with my tiller aft cockpit and 6 feet headroom in the main cabin. She's really gorgeous and sails brilliantly however I would like to switch to a CC or Pilothouse to live permanently on it. For instance a 35 foot Nauticat is a huge difference compared to mine, size by size, let alone if I look for over 40 footers. For me it's more lively and happier to live on a movable boat than staitionary between walls.

    I've heard what sound like some pretty good arguments in favor of center cockpits. You can control your boat from there without having to go on deck as much. You can a better view of what's going on all around. You're in a more stable position compared to an aft cockpit.
    However, I have no experience with such boats so I'm not really sure how much I like them in real life.

    The title to this video does say... "Bluewater sailing, center vs aft cockpit" and Not Coastal Cruising/Not Marina posturing/ Not Bay sailing or being an ICW warrior/ Not circumnavigation/ Not island hopping. Blue water sailing, is sailing. Not bobbing on the ball or jerking on an anchor. However, few people buy a boat to specifally sail, physically sail. Which brings us back to something mentioned in earlier videos here on this channel. Do you really need a Blue water boat? Do you need high freeboard, do you need all those ratios & values, bulkheaded compartments, redundancy in systems and equipment, tankage, duplicate electronics, back up navigation, sugar scoop stern and so on.......

      After video: This video isn't a comparison as much as it is attacking the supposed (beneficial) myths of the center cockpit. I appreciate the points about proximity to boom and pitching over lifelines. The benefit of engine access and placement (on the CC boats I'm interested in) really is attractive. Maybe I'm too new, haven't read enough, but aft cockpits often coincide with flatter, wider boats with deeper thinner keels, especially newer boats. Maybe that's because of the prevalence of production (charter targeting) boats? Either way I agree with your summary; read/sail more, understand your needs, pick what works best for you! So I chose dual aft helm , I don't need much below deck as I am always outside. I also learned after spending so much time traveling, everyone who says they will come visit never does, I think in 20 years of travel dozens of states, even more islands, only one friend ever came to visit. So again for me the two cabin vs three. But I only have a 40, I also recently listed her for sale and will be going to a 35.1 that in reality is the same size boat, its newer so closer to actual size stated where my current boat although is a 40 the water line length is 34 ish maybe 35 and the new 35.1 is 34.93 LWL kind of funny. Now I just need mine to sell high and buy a 35.1 low Haha, we can always dream right

      My first choice would be a catamaran if resources were unlimited. After watching the video I must admit I’m a little more in the middle between the two especially in the 40 to 42 foot range.

      i don't have a boat or can i sail so in the end it doesn't matter i guess but i do like the boats and enjoy learning about them.

    This seemed to be a very opinionated take rather than the pros and cons.
    I have sailed in both configurations and I disagree with most of your blunt “facts” about cc . For a blue water boat you missed, free board aft in a following sea. And I would not consider your party pontoon/ cockpit a blue water boat.
    I don’t hate them but I don’t like massive low cockpits with very little freeboard at sea. Nice in the marina though.
    The other big factor is rig choice and the placement of main sheets and mizzen sheets if a ketch. I see a lot of aft cockpit sloops with main sheet tracks across the cockpit and cringe every time. For example in an Irwin 37cc ketch, both main, mizzen and jib sheets can be reached without leaving the helm. The main boom is well above the Bimini so totally safe and with the mizzen down you have a large usable aft deck for bbq, shower, gutting fish etc
    Full headroom throughout below and and a fully protected cockpit. I’m not saying waves never get to you because they did on 2 occasions but I was glad I was not down aft that night with my arse nearly dragging in the ocean when behind the wheel.
